Parking when there are dogs around

I was in our local park yesterday, talking to another dog owner, when an SUV swept in right beside us, halted, and reversed into a parking space. As it reversed, I slapped it on the roof. The driver jumped out, angry, and I think was ready to give me a slap. I said the car park was empty (it was, it serves about 200 cars) and he had no need to park next to us and potentially hit a dog. He said he was parking near the skate park for his children, and our dogs should be on a lead (they weren't). They are elderly, obedient little dogs, and don't need to be on a leash but they are little and could be hit by a car.
I told him to "F--- Off" and felt okay at the time but couldn't sleep last night for worrying who was in the right.
Was I the unreasonable one?

No, he was inconsiderate to park and reverse in where he did (near to people standing with dogs). He should have chosen a space further away from the pedestrians.

Just because you can do something, doesn't mean that you should.

There’s no ‘should’. Why does OP being irresponsible with her dog mean he can’t park where he wants to park?

Op was aggressive, rude, violent and unreasonable. The driver of the car and his children have done nothing wrong. There is nothing that can excuse OP behaviour

G5000 · 02/02/2026 12:13

this reminds me of another thread where the poster let her toddler run arond in a parking garage behind reversing cars, and was then upset a driver almost ran the kid over and didn't apologise enough.

So someone parked in an empty car parking space, you hit the car because YOUR dog was off the lead and they could hit it.
And it was their problem?
Yes, my dear, you were unreasonable

Just this.

Chemenger · 02/02/2026 12:12

Just like you hold a child’s hand in a car park your dog should be on a lead. It’s a hazardous environment.

What is all about, is my little collie is dying of old age, she can't climb stairs, jump into cars, chase balls, hear cars approaching, I just don't know what we emotionally load on to dogs, but their deaths tear our hearts. Life is hard enough without those little babies sleeping next to us, with their breaths getting slower and slower.

Well if it’s deaf, keep it on a lead! What benefit is it off lead?

user405927 · 02/02/2026 12:12

Also, I reverse without looking because my car parks itself in reverse and I look at the screen which has three camera angles so if anybody was watching me park, it would assume I wasn't looking

user405927 · 02/02/2026 12:11

It is madness that you have parked near a skate park on a Sunday and then expected nobody else to park near you.

I don't take any notice of how many spaces that are and if I want to park near the skate park, I would park near the skate park whether or not that anybody else was in the next space. It doesn't make any difference to my parking if there's somebody in the next space.

TheQuirkyMaker · 02/02/2026 08:23

No it was just random parking in a huge empty car park. He just rolled near us and reversed without looking. From the viewpoint of the posters here, I think it was deliberate- perhaps he was angry about dog shit in the park (I always clean it up) and wanted to make his feelings plain. For dog lovers, dogs are sometimes our most cherished company, which non-dog-lovers never understand.

He reversed without look now……

Of course he did!

Jackoutthebox · 02/02/2026 12:09

Off topic but I've never heard of a collie described as a little dog before, I initially thought you meant some kind of terrior or chihuahua.

I think you know your were in the wrong and are lashing out and blaming others because you know your dog was almost run over because in that moment your conversation was more important than your dog and you feel guilty for that. Just be less anti social in the future.

BlanketyBlankBlank · 02/02/2026 12:08

TheQuirkyMaker · 02/02/2026 08:16

Thanks for the reasonable response. It was an empty car park, built to park about 200 cars. Why sweep in and reverse near the only two other cars there?
It wasn't through longing for our company.

When you say “sweep” in (such dramatic words), you mean they drove in and parked in the most convenient place for them, near the skate park?

Put your elderly wandering dogs on a lead or in the car?

I have some sympathy for the op. Yes her dog should be on a lead but people should drive slowly and carefully in a car park. It's almost like the driver did it to prove a point. Also what if the op had toddlers with her instead of dogs? Even if you were holding their hand it would be scary.

But we only have the OPs word for the manner the car was driven. And given her further posts, and their seeming escalation in ‘frothiness’ and choice language, I’m beginning to wonder about that.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 02/02/2026 12:05

@TheQuirkyMaker You really should not be taking your dog out at all if you cannot be bothered to guarantee her safety.
Watching a dog get old, especially one with failing health and faculties, is horrible - upsetting at best, traumatic at worst - but it is something you know will happen, right from the time you get them, and it is not an excuse for such appalling behaviour.
I loathe people like you because you tar all responsible dog owners with your dirty brush.

Binus · 02/02/2026 12:04

On the off chance this is real, it is not a sensible idea to have a deaf dog off lead in an area that is designated for cars to park in. People do actually have a responsibility to keep their animals safe if they can't do it for themselves.

There's no "should" about it. Yes it would have been better for OP if he parked further away, but it was clearly better for him to park where he did. OP's needs/wants don't trump his.

LeedsLoiner · 02/02/2026 11:55

FlowerFairyDaisy · 02/02/2026 11:24

No it isn't. Read the OP and it's clear the driver was an entitled idiot. Could have parked anywhere in that car park but chose the space closest to the skate park despite the fact that people (and dogs) were congregated there. Nothing assumed at all. Lazy, entitled driver.

The driver can park (legally) anywhere he likes in a public car park.
He wanted to park as near as possible to where he (and his children) wanted to get to - again perfectly legally - the driver has no responsibility for where people choose to stand in a car park or if those people are stupid enough to let their elderly and deaf dogs wander about a car park off the lead.
Why does the type of car matter or do you just "tut" at anyone with a nice car (better car than you?) and assume they are entitled ?
Finally what has someone parking perfectly normally in a public car park got to do with your perceived issues around parking at the local school - if your children are endangered by poor parking at the school, report it to the school and the local council traffic enforcement team and they'll sort it out.
If I was parking my car and some mad old bat with a couple of mangy old dogs told me to "fuck off" in front of my children they'd get a response in kind back.

Rosa1211 · 02/02/2026 11:54

No, you're right there O.P. I don't think your company would have enriched his day.

It’s a CAR park. He parked his CAR. In a designated CAR parking spot. It’s not a let your old deaf dog wander around off a lead whist you chat spot.

hes done absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever

If he’d bumped it up the kerb and driven across the grass and left it there maybe - but he didn’t, did he?

Do you really think that the driver selected the best space to park in? For HIMSELF perhaps. Not for the pedestrians.

CoralOP · 02/02/2026 11:49

And the way you behave has nothing to do with your dog dying so stop trying to use that to excuse yourself, poor dog though

CoralOP · 02/02/2026 11:47

You're just a horrible human being by the sounds of it.hittibg people's cars, saying you want to punch them, shouting at them, saying they were a cunt and the whole time you were the completely unreasonable, aggressive and entitled one.
I hate that the world has so many people like you....

Spidey66 · 02/02/2026 11:46

I'm a dog owner/lover but it's still a big YABU from me. He can park where he likes, and your dog needs to be on a lead in a car park.

Blushingm · 02/02/2026 11:46

Mangelwurzelfortea · 02/02/2026 11:40

Must admit I didn't know not parking near other cars in an empty car park was a 'thing'. I regularly stop off with my dogs at a local playing field on my way back from the school run and just park next to the other dog walkers right by the entrance, even though there's a whole empty car park I could park in. It never occurred to me that that was in any way weird.

It’s not weird - in anyway.

Yes, very sad, but nothing at all to do with the point in question.

You were not unreasonable to think he could have parked a little farther away, but totally unreasonable to say things like he reversed without looking (how do you know?) or imply that he was trying to harm your dog. Maybe he wanted to be as near the skatepark as possible so he could stay in his car but still keep an eye on his children.

In any case, by banging on his car like an idiot with road rage you immediately put yourself in the wrong. That was just likely to frighten his children and make him jump with shock and cause an accident.

Binus · 02/02/2026 11:45

This has to be a wind up!

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 02/02/2026 11:43

@TheQuirkyMaker what did the other dog owner do/say? Did he or she agree with your actions?
