Parking when there are dogs around

TheQuirkyMaker · 02/02/2026 08:05

I was in our local park yesterday, talking to another dog owner, when an SUV swept in right beside us, halted, and reversed into a parking space. As it reversed, I slapped it on the roof. The driver jumped out, angry, and I think was ready to give me a slap. I said the car park was empty (it was, it serves about 200 cars) and he had no need to park next to us and potentially hit a dog. He said he was parking near the skate park for his children, and our dogs should be on a lead (they weren't). They are elderly, obedient little dogs, and don't need to be on a leash but they are little and could be hit by a car.
I told him to "F--- Off" and felt okay at the time but couldn't sleep last night for worrying who was in the right.
Was I the unreasonable one?

It’s been well observed that in near empty car parks, people tend to park near the only cars. Probably something very psychological. Your responsibility to keep your dogs safe in a known risky environment. Attacking the car is weird.

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/02/2026 14:52

This isn’t another Liz Jones thread is it?

You park close to the park cos your dog is old. Grand. Good on you. He parked close to the park cos maybe he's got a dodgy back or is as lazy as sin or well actually no, none of your business he did nothing wrong and you should have been slapped as hard as you slapped his card.
It shouldn't have kept you awake all night wondering if you were wrong, you should have worked it out in about 2 seconds and dropped off to sleep.

Agree. He may also have parked as near to the skate park as he could because he didn’t want his children to have to walk across the car park where cars are moving and reversing. So in actual fact he’s shown more concern for his kids safety than OP did for her dog.

OP very unkindly said if the children were capable of using the skate park they were capable of walking to it. That doesn’t take into account the safety angle, or the fact that one or more of the children may have SEN that’s not immediately discernible. So much assumption, lack of concern for others and breathtaking entitlement.

Allbymyself123 · 02/02/2026 14:49

Yes & i wouldn’t have been as nice if you hit my car AND swore because you were standing chatting with your dogs not safely on a lead!

G5000 · 02/02/2026 14:47

But no, he chose to park his big car as close to the skatepark as he could get

Well yes, he wanted to take his kids to skatepark. Considering the elderly dog was probably not using the skatepark, OP is the one that could have chosen to park somewhere else.

Pastit12 · 02/02/2026 14:36

You say in your original post that you was up last night worrying about what you did and said to the driver so that and the fact that nearly 100% have voted you were unreasonable
I can understand you were annoyed that the guy drove his car near your much loved old dog when in your view there was no need but as most posters have pointed out he did nothing wrong if there is an empty space he is entitled to use it and in a car park common sense says you should have you dog on a lead
Trying to justify your actions doesn’t make you come across very well at all
better just chalk it up to experience and not have your dog off lead in a car park

Bluedenimdoglover · 02/02/2026 14:35

You know you are in the wrong. You can't justify your behaviour here. Learn and move on.

What is all about, is my little collie is dying of old age, she can't climb stairs, jump into cars, chase balls, hear cars approaching, I just don't know what we emotionally load on to dogs, but their deaths tear our hearts. Life is hard enough without those little babies sleeping next to us, with their breaths getting slower and slower.

She can't hear cars approaching so obviously the thing to do is to let her wander around off- lead, in a car park.

AmusedMember · 02/02/2026 14:34

Heavens forbid he parked in an empty space in the carpark!

Willowywisp · 02/02/2026 14:32

TheQuirkyMaker · 02/02/2026 09:23

Everybody is entitled. No one has responsibility. We can do whatever we want. Who needs to work or get an education- it is all on TikTok, know what I mean?

"Everybody is entitled" - well you certainly are. "No one has responsibility" - actually you have responsibility to keep your dogs on a lead in public. This has to be rage bait, surely.

Blushingm · 02/02/2026 14:31

FlowerFairyDaisy · 02/02/2026 13:58

As I have written already in a few replies before this. He could have parked anywhere. He had the choice of an entire car park by the sounds of it. But no, he chose to park his big car as close to the skatepark as he could get, where pedestrians were congregated with dogs. And he reversed into the space.

Do you really think that's reasonable? I call that bloody lazy and entitled.

Maybe the OP was inconsiderate to bash on his roof but he was inconsiderate first and the whole encounter wouldn't have some about had he chosen to park away from where people were standing.

He likely has a ‘big car’ as he has kids who like to go the skate park.

He can park wherever he wants in that car park. He wanted to park close to the skate park - that’s completely reasonable

Hes done nothing wrong - at all

Yet op becomes violent and aggressive in front of this poor guys children.

Damn. I would have ripped you a new one. The height of self-entitled arrogance, no manners, disgusting and embarrassing behaviour. You've made yourself look really small. You sound unhinged. Your dogs should be on a leash - I say this as an experienced dog handler. It doesn't matter how old they are. Your dogs are senile and could therefore be experiencing pain you are unaware of - Dogs in pain can bite people, especially small children. Your dog would then be at fault and put to sleep because of your sheer, selfish ignorance. People like you make my blood boil.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 02/02/2026 14:31

This thread is a fascinating insight into the mind of a modern dog owner!

Londonrach1 · 02/02/2026 14:30

This has to be a wind up. Yabu and tbh vvvv strange. An empty car parking space and the driver backed into it. You choose to hit and potentially damage his car on purpose. I hope he made a police report about your aggressive behaviour.

TheQuirkyMaker · 02/02/2026 09:08

She was somewhere safe, until he decided to drive 2 feet away from us, needlessly. What idiot would decide, in an empty car park, to park bang next to the only 2 cars there? 150 empty spaces on the way in, 50 empty spaces past us, an almost totally empty car park, and he decides to stop and reverse in the space next us? So close I could slap his car.
I'm getting flack but he was a cunt.

Edited

"I'm getting flack" you literally posted an AIBU and you are annoyed that people are giving you their opinions. The more I read of your responses the more unreasonable I see you are. I cannot believe you slapped his car, told him to fuck off and now you're calling him a cunt! A total stranger who was just parking so his kids could go to the park. Is it because he had real babies and nor fur-babies that you are so bitter? Or what do you call children - skin dogs, is it? Edited for typos.

Bluntly, if your dog can't hear cars approaching then that's all the more reason to have her on a lead in a car park.

IcyBlueFrost · 02/02/2026 14:25

You were unreasonable, but an empty car park, that annoys me.

I can almost guarantee that in an empty car park, someone will park next to me.
Sometimes I haven’t even left the car, in which case, I reverse out, while they are in their car and park a small distance away.

The other day someone parked so close to me, that I had to get in the passenger seat and climb over. They were in the supermarket. Many many spaces around.

There was a tiny space between their passenger door and my driver door, I couldn’t possibly have got in, I don’t think a child could have got in.

But yes OP, your dogs should be on leads, but people should drive and park more considerately, and you are right, smaller dogs might not be seen, even if on leads, by people reversing.

LeedsLoiner · 02/02/2026 14:24

Got to say this post is bringing out more trolls than an Icelandic saga...

Willowywisp · 02/02/2026 14:23

TheQuirkyMaker · 02/02/2026 08:23

No it was just random parking in a huge empty car park. He just rolled near us and reversed without looking. From the viewpoint of the posters here, I think it was deliberate- perhaps he was angry about dog shit in the park (I always clean it up) and wanted to make his feelings plain. For dog lovers, dogs are sometimes our most cherished company, which non-dog-lovers never understand.

Yep, we don't understand how owning a dog makes some owners think they have a God given right over every public space and everyone else needs to be the ones to modify their behaviour to accommodate your off-lead pooch and put up with being on the receiving end of verbal abuse into the bargain.

Nannyfannybanny · 02/02/2026 14:22

Why is a dog jumping into the front footwell?

No-one ever died from car driving 2 feet away from them. He didn't head directly for your dog.

Whether or not they should 'only exist' there, they were there. And the driver saw them there (at least you'd hope he did!). So he should have parked elsewhere.

No. He shouldn't.

Why on earth would you have 2 elderly dogs off the lead in a car park whilst you gab to your pal? Get in the park or in your car. Don't loiter in car parks. You had no business telling him where to park or smacking his car. Telling him to fuck off is outrageous. He's perfectly within his rights to park in a free space in a car park.

Blinky21 · 02/02/2026 14:17

Your dogs were either under control, and therefore safe, or they weren't, which would be your fault, so I can't see how in any instance this is the driver's fault
