I know I'm not being unreasonable, but just please agree so that we can educate people,
Without rules, where are we?

Promise you it’s a thing! A and E are together, as one letter (diphthong).
I had to do Latin (French curriculum), what made you choose Latin as a degree?

I chose a degree in Latin with Ancient Greek because my A level results for those subjects were good.
I would never encourage any one to do the same.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g confirms that caetera is not Latin usage.

Doesn’t hyperbole rhyme with Super Bowl? Oh dear

'the word "bureaucrat" (thanks predictive text!) is a weakness of mine - I can just never get it right first time!'

Bankrupt, chauffeur, necessary, consensus, are a few of my bêtes noire, or is it bête noires ?

Ooh for "necessary" I was taught at school, "you need a C to See the Sea". No idea how it helped me remember, or what context it's supposed to link to, but I always think of it when writing necessary!

Chauffeur is another of my tricky ones.

We all have words and phrases we don't know how to pronounce, having only ever seen them written down. When I was at school I caused some merriment by pronouncing hyperbole as if it rhymed with superbowl. Fair enough. I also thought Penelope rhymed with antelope but fortunately heard someone else say it before I ever had occasion to do it myself.

Re et cetera - I have a Classics degree and am about as certain as I can be that it's never spelled et caetera in Latin. Wiktionary says this, though:

French
In the modern French alphabet, æ (called e-dans-l'a, 'e in the a') is used to spell Latin and Greek borrowings like curriculum vitæ, et cætera, ex æquo, tænia, and the first name Lætitia.

It sounds like it's a French thing to represent the vowel sound. It's definitely not a Latin spelling, or the spelling used in English.

MyThreeWords · 02/02/2026 15:11

YABU to care so much. It's only a typo or an insignificant little grain of ignorance. It doesn't really reduce people's ability to communicate or think, like some errors do.

French O level is nearly 50 years behind me, but I'll tentatively suggest bêtes noires.

This is my weakness and my phone is more illiterate than I am 😖.

Is there a handy rhyme or saying that makes it easier to remember?

No.

YesSirICanNameChange · 02/02/2026 14:31

I think another issue is the number of people, even on this thread, who say "don't criticise someone's SPaG if yours isn't perfect". Why not? It isn't a competition to see who has the best SPaG; it should be done in a well-intentioned way to teach, and if you're happy to teach, surely you're open to learn?

No one has absolutely perfect SPaG all the time and we all had to learn somewhere. I'm an ex-English teacher; the word "bureaucrat" (thanks predictive text!) is a weakness of mine - I can just never get it right first time! I'll never be upset if someone corrects me on it, even if I've just corrected someone else's spelling of a different word.

I don't understand how we've reached a point where we're so competitive that we can't accept feedback from other people without viewing it as a superiority thing.

HidethebiscuitsitsNellie · 02/02/2026 14:18

I remember by thinking ‘loose’ is all baggy with that extra ‘o’ in it.
And ‘lose’ has lost the other ‘o’

They’re pronounced differently though? I’m not meaning to be a dick saying that, I’m just not sure how a rhyme would help if the root of the issue is that you kind of see them/‘hear’ them in your head as interchangeable. Is that what is happening when people confuse these two words? (Genuinely asking without judgement)

Doingtheboxerbeat · 02/02/2026 13:53

YesSirICanNameChange · 02/02/2026 07:23

I think that it's fine to have high standards for spelling, and that unless someone is posting about a dire/sad situation, it's actually ok to correct someone's spelling. Just a friendly "not sure if you're aware, but it's lose, not loose" can go a long way.

Parents should be modelling good attitudes to feedback anyway, so that their children accept and learn from feedback from their teachers. Not just parents, actually - everyone should welcome feedback and opportunities to learn and grow.

This is the approach 👆 please, correct me nicely because my spelling and grammar is atrocious and I would hate to see standards as a thing of the past - same with good manners.

Just don't be a d!ck about it. Unless you are a racist gobshite, spreading misinformation, then I will be there with my red pen discrediting you all day long.

No. Let's push back on these "I'm so affronted" posts. It's light hearted FFS, but at the same time it's pointing out a common, irritating mistake. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I can understand why it is a bit frowned on to point out someone's poor spelling or grammar on a post, you also risk making a complete tit of yourself if your own post has a mistake!

However, the OP is not doing that to any one individual. She is just giving an example of something that annoys her and that seems fine to me.

One tends to get used to and overlook much of the poor SPaG on the internet, plus one must bear in mind that phone predictive text can play havoc with what you intended to say. But just occasionally you see something so bad it does make you wince. Only this morning I was looking at a thread on Nextdoor and one poster had great long rambling posts with the wildest capitalisation imaginable. Real School of Donald Trump. E.g.

That's a very Bad Service Then ,thats why this Individual has the Attitude Problem that You Have Experienced.

I mean, just how does someone type something like that and think that's how it should be?

ThisAutumnTown · 02/02/2026 09:29

My pet peeve is when people ask for ‘advise’. It’s ‘advice’!!
You can ask for advice.
You can advise someone on what to do.

Really grates on me! 😂
