New boyfriend snapped at me

Snappyg666 · 01/02/2026 15:38

Could do with your opinion. FWIW I am happy to be told AIBU. Im just trying to make sure I dont ignore anything important.

I was driving down the motorway with my boyfriend of 3 months. He was driving and I was supposed to be giving directions. We were talking and then he asked whether he should be taking the exit and I kind of hesitated for a few seconds as wasn't sure abd then said yes. He tutted and said for fucks sake and then quickly switched lames to exit

Now totally get why that would be irritating 😅 Its just that I was with my ex for 10 years and for all his faults, I dont think we ever snapped at each other once. We had massive bust ups about the big questions but irritating things like this we were both very generous with each other so im not sure what's normal. But I felt like a child being reprimanded and felt like saying "jesus get over it"

If Google Maps was lagging, what was OP supposed to do? Why is she to blame?

Edited

She said she hesitated because she wasn't sure of the exit and because they were talking, even if maps was lagging, the instructions tell you the exit number. I read the instructions ahead of time and then know the exit number in advance. But either way, he tutted and said for fucks sake, which is hardly snapping at her and I think it's a pretty typical response to the situation, especially given as she said : In fairness before we got on the motorway I also made a wrong call which cost us about 30 minutes as we ended up in this random town so I do see why he would have been irritated
He has fairly expressed his irritation in a minor way, it's not like he called her names or behaved in an aggressive or intimidating manner.

TessSaysYes · 01/02/2026 22:33

A singular "for fuck sake" wouldn't really bother me.

Unless it's part of a pattern of rude language and an unpleasant demeaner...just watch he's not masking who he really is, it being early days in the relationship.

You seem disproportionately angry. Let's not continue to engage each other.

Not remotely.

Fine by me.

Hardly an essay - you insinuated that I have low standards in a two word pass agg post - all I did was clarify my position.

Name calling? I didn't call you a name.

The driver is ultimately responsible, male or female. If he ran a red light or speeded or did an illegal turn, HE would be legally responsible as the driver, not the OP.

We're not talking about running a red light or speeding though. Yes those things would be the driver's fault. Not paying attention and giving the wrong directions is the fault of the person navigating.

HeyThereDelila · 01/02/2026 22:22

If he snaps again then get rid.

I didn't write an angry essay at a stranger....
You seem to be looking for a fight with the name calling

Next time do what you're meant to do. Give directions clearly and in advance

You ppl all are seriously werid or you just like to echo other weird posts... you can give instructions and know what you are doing and still get confused the odd time. Both dh and I are confident drivers and with maps or reading signs but in the moment ive been unsure or not spoken up in time, its called being a human being. He certainly hasnt got mad or said fucks sake. He knows it can happen.

No one I have dated has ever sworn at me - which is also what didn't happen in this case. My bar is incredibly high - but I am also understanding that someone who is tired, fraught and stressed after a bloody long drive might just possibly have a moment of frustration. Because they are a just a person and not a cardboard cutout without emotions, feelings and humanity. I bet you've never once in your life ever got frustrated and sworn under your breath - I imagine your medal must be in the post now and your local town is getting ready to do a parade in your honour because you've never, ever lost your temper for a second.

What scolding? It wasn't a rebuke or a reprimand. It was three words in a stressful situation that weren't directed to her. Hardly the telling off of the century. And after doing ALL of the driving on a mammoth journey. And he apologised, unprompted, once the journey was over.

Guess the milk of human kindness only flows in one direction?

Low bar?

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/02/2026 15:42

To be fair I would have said the same. You had one job!

My parents have been very happily married for 47 years. The only bickering they really did was if my mum Was navigating and made a mistake or was too slow at telling him of a turn off. The invention of the sat nav made travel much more peaceful. 🤣🤣

How someone handles themselves and treats others in mildly irritating and inconvenient situations shows their character. Three months in and OP gets a frustrated FFS and a scolding then acts completely normal after? 🚩

This is what I said upthread, as the driver, I ensure I am prepared for long journeys without relying on others for basic navigation.

But for some reason the boyfriend seems to be being absolved of any responsibility and it’s all being blamed on the OP.

So do I - I don't let anyone navigate for me though, ever. But they clearly agreed between themselves that was the plan - maybe it was a trade off for her doing sod all of the driving?

You say basic navigation, but no one knows the route - it's not been shared - and it could have been through dire weather through unfamiliar terrain when having an extra pair of eyes helps. Also presumably there was a reason why a navigator was needed - doesn't make him a crap driver necessarily.

BadgernTheGarden · 01/02/2026 21:32

Snappyg666 · 01/02/2026 15:51

No he didnt sulk.

I had given him wrong directions on a ring road before that, granted

So you are not good at map reading he should get a satnav if he can't navigate himself. This should be the honeymoon period, you should be laughing together about little mistakes, roll forward a few years... Not looking good.

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 01/02/2026 21:30

Snappyg666 · 01/02/2026 15:55

Yeah exactly. I would never want to make anyone feel shit even if I were intensely annoyed at them

Well you would… you wanted to say ‘get over it’ which would have made him feel shit.

NotAtMyAge · 01/02/2026 21:28

wrongthinker · 01/02/2026 20:33

If someone behaved in the way you describe yourself behaving, I would absolutely never want to see them again. I don't have relationships with anyone who has less than a brilliant sense of humour, and certainly not with anyone who thinks it's fine to throw a tantrum whenever I make a mistake.

A friend of mine once sent me several miles in the wrong direction during what should have been a simple run out to the shops. We ended up on the motorway heading to a completely different city. We still laugh about it now. If you don't take yourself too seriously, stuff like this is funny.

In what universe could a quick FFS under his breath in this situation be called a tantrum? No wonder so many people find it impossible to have lasting relationships. We are all human, which means we're fallible and make mistakes and are certainly not always perfectly in control of our emotions and reactions. It's as though people have never heard of compromise and give-and-take.

Flamingojune · 01/02/2026 21:28

He sounds like an impatient tosser

Eenameenadeeka · 01/02/2026 21:19

I think what he said was a perfectly normal response and hardly snapping at you! You'd already caused one big delay, and then could have had another, on a very long drive. He hardly said anything, and then apologized later. I don't think he's wrong at all.

If Google Maps was lagging, what was OP supposed to do? Why is she to blame?

nomas · 01/02/2026 21:26

Arlanymor · 01/02/2026 21:23

Most people who navigate that distance don't just rely on the technology. I've got an integrated satnav in my car but I check out the route beforehand on AA route planner and print it off. And my phone with Google Maps is the back up. That way if anything 'lags' I have alternatives - it's called being prepared isn't it?

There's nothing in her post to say that he's too cheap to buy a satnav, you're just making an assumption with no evidence. I think he was frustrated with the situation more than anything else. Which is normal - there have been lots of comments on here about expecting her to be a 'robot', the irony being that he is expected to be a 'robot' by not reacting at all after a mammoth drive which has already been extended through no fault of his own.

I'd still like to know whether she did any of the driving or not - strange she won't answer that question.

As Google Maps was lagging then it’s not OP’s fault and he shouldn’t be taking out his frustration on her.

Sounds like he is too cheap to buy a sat nav.
