I have complained about the noise of my neighbour's dog. Is it going to get worse?

My next door neighbours are an elderly couple, but fucking hell, they're noisy.

They have two dogs. One of the dogs barks at intervals of twenty minutes. There's always at least one of the couple in the house when the dog barks and so they're very much aware of the barking and they regularly shout at it. Barking is throughout the day and up until gone 11pm, when it wakes me up. It's just been barking for half an hour non stop now. Doing anything relaxing, eg reading, having a bath, etc. is bound to get interrupted and working from home is a nightmare. I know meetings will get interrupted by the constant sound of barking and them shouting the dogs name or 'for fucks sake' at the dog.

I won't go round as they're very much aware of the barking and I've shouted through the walls numerous times. Today, all through my breakfast it was barking with the woman home and apart from the odd shout of the dogs name, it was not shutting up.

I've finally flipped and submitted a noise complaint through the council. I'm in rented accommodation. Has anyone ever done this? What was the outcome and was the any retribution from the neighbours? I love my house so much I do not want to move.

Sympathies, it sounds like a nightmare.

It always amazes me how some dog owners are totally oblivious to how fucking awful this is for other people.

RupertTheBlackCat · 02/02/2026 07:49

Why not offer to take the poor dog for a walk?

I've decided to withdraw my complaint to the council and go and speak to the neighbours. I really don't want any poor neighbour relations, especially as I love where I live and the house I live in. I can't see the neighbours being open to discussion to change things, but I'll soon see. I also get the impression that the dog has been barking like this for years and years and they'll probably think it's a me problem.

That's a shame. Good luck.

DaisyChain505 · 02/02/2026 07:28

You have nothing to lose by going round there to chat. You know they’re not a young mouthy couple who could possibly turn violent, they’re elderly.

Just tell them that the barking is really getting to you, ask what the circumstances are, does the dog have dementia etc. Suggest a vet trip, exercising it more, a thunder vest if it’s an anxiety situation and let them know that you’re taking it to the council if it doesn’t stop. This should push them to seek professional help.

They know the dogs are bothering me as I shout enough through the walls. I'm not up for any confrontation.

Would they hear you shouting over the noise if the dogs?

You don't have to be confrontational, just go round and explain how they are disturbing you.

I used "cretin" to mean an exceptionally stupid person. Have just googled it, and find that its ARCHAIC/HISTORICAL meaning is someone whose intellectual development has been impeded by fetal thyroid deficiency. I would be interested to know how many people actually know this meaning in order to be offended by it. I respect your desire to use non- disablist language but genuinely think objecting to this use of a word is a bit of a stretch, given that I am pretty old now, and have never heard of this meaning.
In any case I can't edit the post now.

I knew what it meant. I’m not offended personally but it is a perfect example of not using words you don’t know the real meaning of.

Hope you never use stupid or idiot either as they're both considered ableist too. I do, but I hope you don't as you seem to consider yourself the language police. .

But words matter, don't they? That's why we are careful to use respectful words when discussing race, gender or sexual orientation, for example.
Using the word cretin in a non-medical context is insulting. I'm surprised you can't see that.

Edit: I think I tagged the wrong person originally, this is @nfjufg .

Yikes, do you generally speak to people like that? Doesn’t make you seem pleasant either.

My dog is well trained and we live in a rural area where nobody would be concerned by a barking dog, as people have dogs guarding their property, but this post isn’t about me. It’s about an elderly couple being shouted at through the walls by an aggressive neighbour which is unacceptable, unless you’re in real scummy circles.

Are they too ‘thick’, horrible language by the way, to train their dogs or are they just overwhelmed by dog training, hard of hearing or dealing with more pressing issues?

Insane that you’re talking about empathy with a post like that.

Edited

Your post is naive and superficial. You are trying to downplay constant invasive noise that is being caused with no care for the effects on the neighbours.

I find some dog owners entitled beyond belief.

Op you have my utmost sympathy. I suffered this for some years, but thank God they're moving. It isn't a dog problem it's an owner problem. It's their entitled attitude that means they won't do anything.

They don't seem hard of hearing. They have normal voluned conversations with each other. They also shout very loudly at the dogs, the dogs bark often through meetings I have. Funnily enough, me shouting shut them the fuck up yesterday and usually does but I don't like shouting.

They're very much aware their dog barks and that it's an absolute piss take as they shout at the poor thing every time it starts barking, which obviously doesn't get results and the dog barks more.

Also, with the 'poor they're attitude, I'm sick to death of being woken up at gone 11pm by the woman shouting or the dog barking, or both. Its every day that the noise starts up. They do know how to shut the dog up. Perhaps it's laziness that they don't.

"Overwhelmed by dog training,"🤣
"Hard of hearing"🤣
"Dealing with more pressing issues"🤣
All very feeble excuses for people who won't take responsibility for training their dogs and are inflicting enormous stress on their neighbour as a result.
You think "thick" is "horrible" language? Oh dear. What's REALLY "horrible" is that OP's life is being made a misery. Even more "horrible" is your ridiculous defence of the neighbours.

It's not an offensive term if people don't know the offensive meaning. Language evolves. But fine, dredge up the archaic meaning and get the post deleted.
You ARE the language police.

They dint rent. Their house is bought and they've been here 40+ years.

After I shouted in frustration earlier, the dog has bene kept quiet all day long. They can keep it quiet, they choose not to. Laziness and not giving a shit.

OP posts:
Chefpig · 01/02/2026 20:49

I really don't see what me going round talking to them would achieve. If they wanted to try harder to shut the dog up they would. Funny thing is, they do shut the dog up once I've shouted usually. It shouldn't take that though. If they know that the dog barking is disturbing me, and bothering them as they end up shouting and swearing at the dog which doesn't work obviously, then a conversation with those types of people isn't going to work and as they're pig ignorant disturbing my peace, they don't deserve a conversation. The man of the couple walks past at the same time each day and looks in. He can see I'm sat there with my laptop working. Still, the dog barks incessantly. They just don't give a shit.

Do the dogs get walked?

I'm assuming they don't. Happy walked dogs would not bark excessive like you describe.

There are neighbours round near me, never ever walk there barky dogs. It's sad really some people don't deserve them.

They don't ever get walked.

Bit of an oxymoron. You are inviting conflict and confrontation by yelling through the wall! And then reporting them without talking to them first. Good luck!

Zov · 01/02/2026 20:23

Are the neighbours renting too @Chefpig ?

I think (as has been said) that you should have told them about their dog(s) first and not gone down the road of complaining first. But you are where you are now.

If they're renting, you may be able to complain to their landlord. (But talk to them first?)

Bufftailed · 01/02/2026 20:20

Noise probably won’t get worse but if you put a foot wrong they’ll be looking for ways to get you back. Shouting through the wall is a bit much
