To regret not getting a robot vacuum sooner

Oh my days. What a game changer! Bought it on Wednesday and the joy of seeing him pootling about, vacuuming and mopping my floors while I get in with other things! I have three kids and I think I’ve vacuumed twice a day for the last 16 years. Hours of my life back. And it does a great job too. Am I alone in my new obsession?

They’re vastly overrated.

They’re fine if you generally live in a pristine house, you can vac up a few crumbs here and there, but for the most part they push the dirt around until it’s in the corner where you can’t see it.

And they’re no good if you have pets. Or on carpets.

Mine is a eufy. I use it to sweep the dirt off the kitchen floor into a corner then I sweep it up. But I’d never buy another one.

Interestingly roomba have recently gone out of business.

Thank you for this. I have thought about them but I have a tiny shark that I can whizz round with. Takes about 10 mins. My husband does a much more thorough clean every week with his vacuum cleaner.

I got one recently, which I love, and was hoping the cats would hop on like the YouTube cats. But they have not attempted to climb on it even when it is docked. I am very disappointed in them

I suspect ours would have been the same....

I have 3 laresars that vacuum and mop. It’s relatively easy to setup your house so it can get underneath furniture and I just pull the table chairs out a bit when I set them off. Best things ever.

ps they are fairly simple and don’t have maps. I set them off and they keep on going over and over the area for 4 hours or more.

BunnyLake · 31/01/2026 15:57

I didn’t expect them to be so cheap with a mop function! I have seen one that is more like £1,699. I wonder how they differ?

I feel like people should talk about this more! The joy of seeing the kids dropping crumbs and sending the robot vacuum after them instead of knowing I’m going to have to wrestle Henry out of the cupboard…immense! We have the Riborock S10…it was only £169.99 so I wasn’t sure how good it would be, but no complaints. So so clever how it maps the rooms!

Well comparing to a Henry isn’t the same as comparing to other vacuum cleaners. They are very awkward.

I got an Eufy at Christmas and I love it! Its the most useful household member. We call him Nigel. I put off getting one for a while as it seemed pointless as I'd still have to hoover the stairs, corners etc. However hes fab! Its so satisfying just pressing a button on the app and off he goes.

Is it easy to set up (with the vacuum and mop options). I want to treat myself to one later this year as I have an injury that causes me a lot of jip when hoovering (so it’s not really a luxury item as such), but I’m concerned I won’t be tech enough to get it started and working properly.

Glashouse · 31/01/2026 15:50

Ive got a Neato it was amazing but theyve shut the app down so now its completely useless. Neato say its ok because I can still use it manually by pressing the button to start it but the whole thing for me was that I used the app to clean while I was out. Maybe ill be able to save up for a romba this year.

I haven't got one, but must confess I thought about getting one purely to see if our cat would ride on it like they do on YouTube...

We've got the eufy x10 pro Omni. It vacs/mops and lifts itself up onto rugs. Its never got stuck in a corner and takes itself home for cleaning. The only PITA is clearing the floor beforehand- which would be the same for any robo vac. We have a dog bed, toys, cords and general things on the floor that we pick up before a clean. The dog also barks at eufy, so we tend to 'prep' the room when we are going out. Maybe if we used it daily, the dog would get used to it?

We also have a corded henry and very recently a uninell cordless vac. I use the uninell daily, but the robot one only about weekly.

MamaRoly · 31/01/2026 15:37

@Shoecamp you are probably right, the round hoover can't do corners, or move furniture or rugs to hoover behind. But with busy job, two kids and a cat I just find it so useful to have (even a) superficial hoover round every day helps keep on top of the house.

My shit one was ecovacs!

Ooh! I googled and it seemed a lot of people had the same issues with theirs too. Drove me bonkers!

Handeyethingyowl · 31/01/2026 15:36

Hoovering is the one household job I don’t mind!

MamaRoly · 31/01/2026 15:34

Oooooh @NewGoldFox I had forgotten about the cat poo when ours was a kitten. Yes I agree that was grim .... tracked throughout the house, leaving us to clean the carpet AND disembowel the hoover to clean him BUT only happened twice and not since the cat is toilet trained.

Shoecamp · 31/01/2026 15:33

I might be being a bit daft, but I just don’t understand these. I don’t see how they would get into corners, under tables with a lot of chair legs, underneath things, etc. Rooms that have small steps or divides. When I vacuum, I lift the edge of my rugs and vacuum just underneath. Can’t see how a robot would do a good job of that. Also vacuuming doesn’t take long so I don’t consider it much of a timesaver either. For all these reasons I just don’t understand robot vacuums but since I haven’t tried one I guess I could be wrong.

MamaRoly · 31/01/2026 15:32

Love mine, we have an Eufy that is set to trundle out once a day. His name is Morris and he has googly 👀 which the kids added! He copes well with thresholds and from carpet to wooden/tiled floors. He does suck up the cats toys and occasionally gets stuck behind furniture, but then he has to wait until I get home and hunt for him! Our cat also attacks his spinning brushes sometimes but he doesn't seem to mind

NewGoldFox · 31/01/2026 15:31

I had a roomba, after it had an incident with a rogue cat poo I swore off them. Also found it tended to push a lot of dust/dog hair under the sofas.
Would recommend to those without pets though.

Moonlightdust · 31/01/2026 15:25

Does it go over the door thresholds? How about between rugs/wooden floors? Does it not get stuck between dining chairs? Also if using upstairs, does it have a sensor to stop it falling down the stairs? Sorry for so many questions (!), it’s so tempting in my busy household!

Mindbogglingx · 31/01/2026 15:19

I have a sweeping broom and a mop.

girljulian · 31/01/2026 15:04

Honestly, I evangelise about this to everyone! It's the best thing I've ever bought for myself. Now I have an upstairs one and a downstairs one that also mops.

sarahwarah11 · 31/01/2026 15:00

We've got a cheap eufy and it's rubbish. Maybe our house is too cluttered but it gets stuck on stool bases, between dining chairs, on door thresholds etc. It doesn't pick up everything and often just blows crumbs around. It's spinning bits get tangled in the rug and my cat hates it. Not worth it in my opinion.
