To seriously recommend Ireland

Before I start I completely get that it can be expensive, the weather is bad and many Irish residents are emigrating for accommodation & opportunities. But....
A very very large proportion of the Irish people seem put on earth specifically to restore visitors faith in human nature. Genuine and warm, great sense of humour
Many women in particular supposedly find Ireland blissfully relaxing, not just because it is a laidback culture but because the general male culture seems to revolve less around making women feel uncomfortable than in other countries.

Some of the countryside and heritage is literally heavenly. Co. Waterford, especially its western extremities eg Dungarvan. Ardmore, Lismore, is an undiscovered gem.

Yes its not cheap but the food can be exceptional.

Most ordinary people seem exceptionally well disposed to foreign visitors and many have relatives abroad.

In rural Ireland you can drive for miles without seeing a car.

The music is brilliant and the people seem enormously invested in live music.

Well, that's my tuppence.

My dd has moved to a very rural area of Ireland and was concerned that the neighbours wouldn't be welcoming to a dub but she has basically been adopted by them. Weirdly, loads of English people have recently moved there (its cheap) and they all seem to have been accepted without question, if there is any anti British feelings they aren't apparent.

In Ireland?

Yes

Butterbeersallround · 03/02/2026 19:24

She complains about the weather being very wet and dreary. She's from the East of England so used to it being much drier.
Some parts are drier than others. The West gets more rain. The ‘sunny south-east’ is better.
She's also been spat at for being British but that's another story.
So horrible. Terribly embarrassed to hear that. Your poor friend!

Why? What’s wrong?

I worked and lived with two Irish women back in the 90s and the pair of them were total bitches who didn’t do their jobs properly cos they were super lazy. It’s a no from me.

Hilarious

I have a friend who has moved there and complains about it constantly

Anonanonanonagain · 03/02/2026 10:33

I cant imagine living somewhere that makes me miserable, must be hard as I assume they have no other option but to stay? I was miserable living abroad which is why I came home to have a family and raise them here instead.
Today I admit the weather is atrocious, a weather warning in place etc but thats not just Ireland I think the UK is getting it too though. Thankfully I am working from home today :)

@CompanyOfThieves in which season? I assume you have been here through all 4 of them to make that decision?

The weather alone is enough to put me off.

Anonanonanonagain · 02/02/2026 16:06

Ah it is not always like this and once the sun is out it really is an incredible place to live :)
Also today is a bank holiday so the perfect day to rattle about the house in furry pjs sipping wine which is what I will be doing myself shortly.

North county dub or thereabouts but that was yesterday it was fab. Today is a bit dull and overcast and I believe another windstorm is on its way.

Irish women are tough, not really the type to be bossed around or talked down to. Irish mammy is the matriarch of the family and very much raises her children to respect her, including her son.
I don’t find the attitude regressive overall, there are some disrespectful men, men who are violent, but the majority are respectful and progressive.

I totally agree with this, mammy's or not, irish women tend to rule the roost!

Anonanonanonagain · 01/02/2026 15:20

Actually considering meeting a friend with our dogs for an afternoon drink down the pub.

Anonanonanonagain · 01/02/2026 15:17

Surprised its raining in dub city as a few minutes away we have nothing but blue skies and sun today. I have my clothes drying outside and not long home after a beautiful walk on the beach. The weather does affect moods as everyone I walked past seemed more upbeat today than any day last week. Days like today make me love where I live all over again.

Hollyhobbi · 01/02/2026 13:51

Ok. Why on earth is a current map of Ireland and Northern Ireland covered up as ‘sensitive content’. Mumsnet is bonkers sometimes! We all know there are two different states and jurisdictions on the Island! Oh and if anyone is thinking of visiting the sunny south east of our country (Ireland or the Republic of Ireland or the South of Ireland) don’t bother! It’s under another yellow warning for rain again tomorrow😢. And so is Dublin where I live. Can’t ever remember so much continuous rain ever and I’m in my mid 50s!

Spidey66 · 01/02/2026 12:59

My parents were Irish so I’ve been going there since childhood. Even now they’re both dead I still visit. I love it and I’m proud of my Irish roots but it’s not without its problems. Some of its history eg the industrial schools/Magdalen laundries, and the unquestioned power the RC church had is still causing problems now. And there is a fair amount of racism there. And that’s before the weather……

Lovely to visit, wouldn’t like to live there (although we have considered it before).

Hollyhobbi · 01/02/2026 12:50

Martymcfly24 · 01/02/2026 12:47

It's lovely and sunny here in the south east but I know the rain is on the way.

Spain still sounds like a better option!

Ye still had a lot of rain and flooding down there sadly.

Martymcfly24 · 01/02/2026 12:47

Hollyhobbi · 01/02/2026 12:39

My mum has a house on the Costs Blanca and all the family myself and my siblings and our children are looking up flights to Spain. Can’t believe St. Brigids day is wet and cloudy and dreary too. We live near one of the canals in Dublin and I keep thinking we’re going to wake up one morning and it will have flooded!

Gahr · 01/02/2026 12:16

I found that I was catcalled far more in Dublin than in any other European city, which was a real surprise. When I complained about this to a group of women I met drinking, they laughed it off and said I should take it as a compliment. I know that's anecdata, and no doubt I will be told that that is atypical, but I honestly don't see that happening in London or possibly even Paris.

I’m sorry you experienced that @Gahr.
I can’t comment on whether it’s commonplace or not as I wouldn’t be a target, don’t go out that much and don’t know Dublin well. I hope it’s not.

That’s very unusual in Dublin Gahr. I found London to be the worst European City for that.

To be fair, I was taken aback, so maybe I just got the city on an off night. It happened several times and made me feel very uncomfortable, which is unusual for me. I am fairly attractive so used to male attention, but this was next level.
