To think there needs to be a points strategy for voting.

As we are all aware, there are some seriously concerning political views held by some of the nation.

In a bid to make sure that the vote is done fairly, and more substantiated by people with the intelligence to vote properly - I think it should be along the lines of this.

2 votings points to those who have completed university or a degree.
1 voting point to those who have completed GCSE of 3 C’s and above.
0.5 voting point to those with anything less than that.
0.25 voting point to members of society who have been convicted previously.

@StarofWonderStarofLight you sound very much like the poster who wanted a deduction on their NI contributions because you don't use the NHS 🤔

In a democracy, everyone should have a vote. ONE vote.

Just like it is now, in fact. Unless of course you don't think we should live in a democracy any longer.

Boomer55 · 29/01/2026 16:22

Most people have always voted with their wallets. It’s nothing new.

Oh course they have. It is a bit foolish not to. OP seems to think they vote based on their intelligence level and not their financial situation though.

fartoomuchtoblerone · 29/01/2026 16:37

So your solution to combat the rise of the right, driven by inequality and people feeling left behind by those in power, is to further disempower and marginalise them? Yeah that’s really gonna help.

Your suggestion does away with democracy. You’d be as well to move to a wholesale technocracy. That’s the basis of democracy - everybody counts the same.

That was one of suggestion on this thread, that parents get more voting power. I should have quoted it.

Right. I must have missed that but no I do not agree with that.

I kinda see OP’s point about, er, points.

If it were me, I would allocate a x2 extra vote multiplier to parents and taxpayers, to give these voters more weighting in the system.

Extra votes for parents would mitigate against the trend for the elderly vote to trump all else, at the expense of the economy and our national infrastructure. The most egregious example of this is the WFA paid to wealthy pensioners in under occupied homes during an energy, cost-of-living and housing crisis (where thousands of children are living in damp, cold B&Bs right now).

Extra votes to taxpayers would also help rebalance the trend towards higher and ever more expansive benefits (because non taxpayers vastly outnumber taxpayers), the likes of which threaten to destroy all opportunities for investment in defence, housing, education and transport infrastructure.

You do realise that most elderly people are parents right
Also most people in receipt of uc are in work and tax payers.

A better policy would require everyone to be over 25 and pass a basic comprehension test to vote, fail the test you dont get to vote that year

Quick to poo-poo the thread but slow to suggest your own thoughts and better ideas?

Where does anyone state having a baby gives higher voting privilege exactly??

StarofWonderStarofLight · 29/01/2026 16:25

No, nobody ever said because they vote differently - but I’ve seen people literally state they vote for XYZ because their Nan does. That is not proper voting.

I don’t care what party they vote for, but atleast read the bloney manifesto

How do you know that person hasnt spent time throughly discussing the ins and outs with their Nan and decided they agree with her. Being a grandparent doesnt mean you know bugger all about politics!!

The contempt just oozes out of you. Is universal sufferage only a problem because you don't like either how people vote or why they vote the way they do?

Have you ever considered that other people don't have your privileges and experience the world in the same way as you and that might cause them to have different opinions.

Pollqueen · 29/01/2026 16:33

I've worked in law all my life and some of the dumbest people I know have a law degree. Your idea is totalitarian and against everything democracy stands for

StarofWonderStarofLight · 29/01/2026 16:33

BashfulClam · 29/01/2026 16:30

So my friend who didn’t complete her degree and is infertile because of cancer gets less votes that any slack Alice who can get up the duff? She is extremely intelligent and hard working but fuck it she can’t have a baby so less voting power.

Where does anyone state having a baby gives higher voting privilege exactly??

BashfulClam · 29/01/2026 16:33

Also my parents who couldn’t go to university because in their day you left school at 15 you got a job and you handed in your keep to your parents. Less voting power for them 🤔

RetiredMan · 29/01/2026 16:31

I think we could modernise the House of Lords while holding onto its historical connotations by electing its members, with each voter's vote weighted by the amount of tax HMRC records showed them as having paid since the previous election.

Voting could be done on-line by people logged into their HMRC account, so it wouldn't be administratively difficult to implement.

Democracy would not be compromised because everyone would still have an equal vote for the more powerful House of Commons, but the people who actually pay for stuff would get more of a say overall, which seems fair to me.

MrsMcGarry · 29/01/2026 16:31

If some voters choose to vote based on emotional responses to particular parties rather than a critical evaluation of manifesto policies why is their choice less valid than yours?

I absolutely think many people are too easily swayed by incorrect information- the solution to that is to fix the regulation of social media (and mainstream media) to stop companies run by graduates being able to pump out misinformation. Not take away the vote from some people

I know two highly educated professionals with multiple degrees each who are both members of a left leaning political party. They have very strong political views but both admit to never reading the manifesto of the party they are both members of. Where would they fit in your proposal?

fon3us · 29/01/2026 16:29

JonesTown · 29/01/2026 16:21

@AlcoholicAntibiotic

My view is that there should be constituencies for each of Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, LSE, King's College, Durham, Manchester, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Dundee universities.

That would ensure that graduates of these elite institutions- who by definition have better critical thinking and higher intelligence than average, have a greater say in the future of the nation.

That would benefit all.

😂

10000%
therefore change must be made in future voting

No. I voted to remain, but what’s triggered off different/racist parties success is the absolute balls up the Tories and Labour have/are still making with this country. 🤷‍♀️

sesquipedalian · 29/01/2026 15:40

If I made the rules, you’d get a blank piece of paper in which to write the name of the person you were voting for - at least that way you’d actually have to know their name and couldn’t just blindly vote for a party. I’d also stop postal voting - far too many abuses. If people can’t get to the polling station, by all means appoint a proxy, but as long ago as 2005, a judge denounced postal voting as not fit for purpose, saying “It would disgrace a banana republic….There are no systems to deal realistically with fraud and there never have been. Until there are, fraud will continue unabated" - and nothing has changed.

Can you name those abuses? Have you ever watched postal votes being checked against signatures to see the process?

Pluto46 · 29/01/2026 16:26

You mean this University educated ? - rampant socialists......but only until they themselves have to start paying tax

StarofWonderStarofLight · 29/01/2026 16:25

Lmnop22 · 29/01/2026 16:23

You honestly believe that the vote should be removed from people who vote differently to you because you must be correct? And yet you’re decrying right wing politics? You’re literally suggesting a fascist dictatorship….
