To have a secret snack drawer

There’s a drawer in our kitchen that I know my husband never looks in. I bought some chocolate to bake with the other day and hid it in this draw so he wouldn’t find it and eat it before I baked. Since then, I’ve bought a big dairy milk caramel bar and left it in there for when I want to pick at it.
It’s been in there over a week, and I know if it was anywhere else, my DH would have inhaled it.

Today, I bought a pack of chocolate hobnobs and put them in the draw - again so I can pick at at my leisure when working from
home.

AIBU by hiding food from my husband to keep for myself?

(some extra context that I’ve been going through IVF this month and just want a stash for when I need it, rather than going to get something and it’s disappeared!)

Stop it you lot! Leave OP and her spelling alone, there's no need for it.

I used to have a few hiding places for snacks in my kitchen. Trouble was, the kids were very good at sniffing out where I hid things. Thank goodness they've left home and DH is oblivious.

Thank you!! I’m not thick, I know how to spell but ivf meds are throwing me all over the place so very simple mistake, and I’m incredibly tired 😭

I hide chocolate in the salad drawer as he never goes in it. I also have some in the freezer under the frozen veg that he never uses.

Splat92 · 29/01/2026 06:06

The rest of my family know not to touch my chocolate so I don't have to do it but I totally would if I couldn't trust them not to eat it.

I had a friend who used to hide her snacks in the washing machine because noone else went there.

MinnieMountain · 29/01/2026 05:48

Mine goes in the high up cupboard that I also hide presents in. DS knows not to look in there in case it spoils any surprises. It's also a bit more effort for me to get to them.

DH used to "gannet" the snacks as he called it. He thought it was charming. It was actually fucking annoying. We had words but he's on a health kick now anyway.

MammaBear1 · 29/01/2026 05:28

Neither of us hide snacks we’ve bought for ourselves. We’d generally share anyway. In any case we’d not be disrespectful and just take the other person’s snack without asking.
However if you don’t get to eat what you’ve bought because he takes it all first, you’re not being unreasonable in the slightest.

I have an effective way to deal with this which is simply to tell my DH not to eat my stuff. I don't understand why you all put up with that level of disrespect.

Lighten up

Stickytoffeetartt · 29/01/2026 05:15

I have multiple stashes around the house. Dh and dc all know this and search all the time.

ItsNotMeEither · 29/01/2026 05:08

Wait! You've only got one hidden snack drawer? And you're going through IVF? You are being very unreasonable to only have one hidden spot!

I've got three spots, DH has a spot of his own.

Sometimes, if he's run out he'll come and ask if I've got anything small hidden he could have and I've asked him the same.

We all need a little hidden treat sometimes. Neither of us go overboard, but the hidden spot and politely asking if one of us is in 'need' means that nobody ever goes to grab something and finds everything gone.

Married nearly 40 years.

NewGirlInTown · 29/01/2026 04:50

How can you not know how to spell ‘drawer’?
And yes, it does matter.

TheSunRisesInTheEast · 29/01/2026 01:01

Draw a picture is the same as drawer (furniture.)
A drawer (drorer) is someone who draws.
Don't get your drawers (drores)/knickers in a twist over it all 😂

No, you are saying the word draw. You are not saying the word drawer, you do not say blow when you mean blower. You can say drawer and yes the er bit would indeed be noticeable. But you are using a different word.

It is not a pronunciation thing. You can say the er bit but you are choosing not to, and are speaking a different word entirely. And that's fine, I am sure in context it's obvious enough.

Edited

In the North East of England, draw and drawer are pronounced the same. Not even a schwa

Ffs I'm not choosing to, it's a recognised pronunciation of the word spelt drawer. Blower does not have the differences in regional pronunciation. You however are choosing to be obtuse. @nothanks2026

No, it's not. No need to swear ffs 😅You've been saying the wrong word, that's all.

It is not and never has been a regional anything. It's not a dialect, it's nothing. It's just the wrong word and like some you have been using the wrong word and are now embarrassed and angry.

You are choosing to speak the wrong word, you can say drawer and are choosing to use a different word, draw. But you already know this :)

And no matter how much you spit the dummy you will still be speaking the wrong word.

I don't, actually, care at all. But it's funny you're just determined to double down on being wrong, so keep doing that. I'll just keep correcting you :)

YW.

My secret squirrel cupboard saves my sanity,, because his nibs will ścoff down most cakes, crisps, bicces or choccie bars that he lays eyes on. He's not fat either just sodding greedy . I even started buying things I know he doesn't like just to make sure I've got something for myself. 😆

murasaki · 29/01/2026 00:41

I like my chocolate, not that I like a lot of it, fridge cold. So I keep it in the salad crisper, under things. Works a treat, as he's a gannet but would never look there, although to be fair, he's good at replacing.

It's not deliberate, it's a genuine pronunciation @nothanks2026 I'd never heard a different way of pronouncing it until my late teens when I moved away to University.

I know these threads are supposed to be all giggly about chocolate and snacks.

But on a serious note, hell would freeze over before I hid food in my own home.

And it's not a great example to set kids either, if they're going to have to end up either eating sweets/snacks straight away, or hiding them so no-one else takes them.

I was just going to say the same thing. I'd get the ick at just how selfish and greedy it is.

I have a secret drawer with the “nice” stuff. Everything I know he won’t touch is in the kitchen. He easily eats a 500g bar of chocolate in under 24 hours, while I can only eat one square due to reflux issues. Not letting him have my expensive chocolate when he eats it the same way as a bar of Cadburys (not that this is cheap either).

pizzaHeart · 29/01/2026 00:08

YANBU to have a secret stash of chocolate, it’s practically a key to successful marriage.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 29/01/2026 00:06

Chocolate is best straight from the freezer anyway 🤤
You can hide it in a half empty bag of frozen peas.
Safer than Fort Knox 😉

AmplePlayer · 29/01/2026 00:00

I don't think there's a place in the house where my teens couldn't discover snacks.

Sasha07 · 28/01/2026 23:58

For years I hid my goodies in the top shelf of the fridge door. I had to stop a few years ago but sometimes forget and stash a chocolate bar in there... But now that the kids are a lot taller than me now, I often find my stash has been snatched.
Now I have to hide them in random places, like the utensils drawer or hidden in plain sight in places they just never would suspect. But then I tend to forget about them so it's a nice surprise when I come across a forgotten treasure 😁 enjoy your secret stash, we all deserve to have one!
