Divorced 2 years ago and yes definitely struggling. I haven't got anywhere permanent to live yet though and I wonder if that's got a lot to do with it. Adult DD lives me but does her own thing a lot, so I do feel quite "alone". Just not sure why though? Obviously other stuff messing with my head. Really brings it home to me reading how many people here (presuming all women) are saying they are fine with living alone, so surely I should be too?

Are you going to give us your take on it OP?

Not to be pedantic but if you live with your child you don’t live alone.

Being lonely or “feeling alone” isn’t quite the same as living alone - when you don't actually live alone.

YouBelongHere · 27/01/2026 23:36

I love it and would struggle to live with someone else full-time but it can be difficult when something goes wrong and I'm the only one here to try and fix it.

Or when there's a spider. I'm bloody terrified of them and they never crop up when my friend who doesn't mind spiders is here, they only come out when I'm alone 😂

Financially it's also okay. The good definitely outweighs the bad and I love having my own space!!

I don’t know if you’re on Instagram or YouTube but there’s a content creator called “Lana’s solo life” who posts these lovely short videos about being “a single childfree young woman with no friends living alone”. She gets so many people of all ages commenting how they wish for or miss that life. Not so much the no friends part, but more the living alone element .

The brief period in my adult life where I managed to live alone, I broke toes on two separate occasions. I am not the kind of person that successfully cultivates a village. Simple tasks like moving a piece of furniture became chances for me to get ridiculous injuries. I still managed. I would also do it again. I’m just happy knowing that if I do it again, I will probably be in a better financial position. I will still be truly alone, but I will be able to afford to hire help.

This post made me laugh with recognition! 😂

XenoBitch · 27/01/2026 23:31

I live alone. I have a DP, but I would be worse off if he lived with me as I am on UC, and that is how the system works. Before anyone jumps on me, we don't want to live together anyway.
But I manage. I have the whole T-shirt regarding living with a man. Never again.

Onetimeusername1 · 27/01/2026 23:30

To open jars, yes I did.

SPQRomanus · 27/01/2026 23:29

I have lived completely alone for 12 years and prior to that was the sole adult for 18 years while my children lived here.

I have never struggled with the fact of living alone, in the early years I was devastated due to being widowed very young and being a lone parent, but the living alone part has never been an issue.

I run my house and garden exactly as I please. I could never live with anyone ever again.

SouthernNights59 · 27/01/2026 23:28

I've lived alone for most of my adult life, and no I haven't struggled, it's been great.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 27/01/2026 23:24

The only thing I've ever struggled with was assembling a huge IKEA kallax unit by myself. Everything else I'm fine with.

TheSpidermanIsHavingMeForDinnerTonight · 27/01/2026 23:24

I hated it when my marriage broke up and I first lived by myself. I'd say goodbye to my work colleagues on a Friday afternoon and not speak to another person until I went back and said hello to them on the Monday morning. I worked really hard to build my life back up. It wasn't easy. But I am happy now. It would be nice to share the bills though! I have been with my current DP for years and love him very much but I think our relationship works better with us living apart. He did want us to move in together at one point, but he's come round to my way of thinking now 😉

No, I love it. I'm never living with anyone again.

Proccy · 27/01/2026 23:14

It's about your mentality, I lived alone for 10yrs and loved it

mondaytosunday · 27/01/2026 23:06

I live with.. jeez typos!

mondaytosunday · 27/01/2026 23:05

I love Ruth my youngest child (she’s away at uni term time) but I ftfnt get married til I was 42, and we were living together for a few months only before then. Otherwise on my own. I like being on my own but do make an effort to see people otherwise days could go by without speaking to another adult!

Incalescent · 27/01/2026 23:04

I lived alone for six months of the year in a different country to DH for a decade, and loved it. But the most solitary I’ve ever lived was the best part of a year on an otherwise uninhabited island where I was often cut off from the mainland for weeks in bad weather.

YourKhakiViper · 27/01/2026 23:02

I didn’t like it at all when I was young, didn’t really know what to do with myself and was quite scared of everything and would often just go to bed early. To be fair I met DH at 21 though so hadn’t much life experience at that point

HoneyOats · 27/01/2026 23:00

No I absolutely loved living alone, can’t wait to live alone again (sorry kids)

Buzzlightfear · 27/01/2026 22:58

I lived alone through my twenties. I loved it mostly but I had a very active social life too

Live with DH now, love that too but I do occasionally think fondly of my home alone times :)

GinaandGin · 27/01/2026 22:57

I've lived alone for 20 years
I've have pets
I do not want to share my space with anyone
I don't want to hear some man making horrible nasal noises / sneezing ... coughing..
I like being able to have my house at the temperature I want
Be able to make dinner when I want
I have an active social life and lots of hobbies

JanuaryJasmine · 27/01/2026 22:57

i live alone.

id never say never to living with someone again, but they'd have to bringing a lot to my life for me to be willing to compromise.

i don't struggle, i love it.everything is how '& where I want it.

Mindbogglingx · 27/01/2026 22:53

I struggled more with a partner.
I live alone have done now for years and i dont struggle like i use to.

unsync · 27/01/2026 22:50

Struggle with what though? Doing what you want when you want? Not having to put up with someone else's irritating habits? You just need to find your groove and live your life.

Catza · 27/01/2026 22:45

Struggle with what? I live alone, my house is clean-ish, everything is exactly where I left it, I eat what I want when I want, walk around naked sometimes, do starfish in bed, can wake up and read at 2am without waking anyone up. I go out most evenings to do social hobbies and have a PJ day most Sundays. I have the messiest desk in the history of humanity and art supplies permanently spread on my coffee table. I have a visiting cat who comes for a bit of wet food and a cuddle before bed without my ex moaning that he hates cats. No, I don't struggle. Can't imagine why I would.
