To think we shouldn’t have to contribute to soch if we don’t intend to use it?

For example, I don’t want a state pension - so I should surely be able to opt out of soch based contributions percentage. And just pay a lesser amount to cover anything I do take advantage of.

Lol, boomers.

Boomer - "non sensical opinion peddaled as sensible, reasonable idea"
Rest of the population- "your're talking out your arse"
Boomer - "wah wah wah wah nobody agrees with me, your all wrong" *tantrum throws self on floor flails arms and legs.

I think child based stuff should remain something we all provide for, to ensure low income families are not affected.

But for example a non NHS user who does not want a state pension should be able to opt out of soch payments imo.

The elderly are a huge cost of the NHS, you cant predict at 30 whether you'll need it at 80.
The same with state pension. If you end up in poor health early then funds will be eaten up and you would likely need state pension.
The alternative would be to leave non contributors to die because of their lack of foresight into future circumstances.

Why wouldn't they happen to the OP? We have insurance in case of all sorts of unlikely events because they WILL happen to someone, somewhere - and sometimes it will be YOU.

I agree. I was matching the OP for nonsense-energy. Obviously nobody plans for bad shit to happen to them yet bad shit does happen. Will clarify in future!

CharlieEffie · 28/01/2026 09:11

Why should you get a discount for not using state pension. Your not paying for your future one your paying into the current pension

Agree - in the UK people do not have private insurance to cover pretty much any of those things - it’s we why we have a ‘National Insurance’ scheme. Private insurance won’t send a fire engine or ambulance in the UK. First point of service in an emergency is always state provided/funded.

Don’t understand the thinking of many of the posts here.

Edited

I was talking about insurance in general - car insurance, boiler insurance, house insurance etc. My point was that we insure against things that are unlikely to happen even though we hope we'll never need to claim.

60, and never heard of this term, and I'm pretty switched on.

70, and I used to work for DHSS (Department of Health and Social Security) and I've never heard of it either.

I dont think you understand how it works do you...

I think there’s a lot that the OP doesn’t understand!

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 28/01/2026 09:03

Well I was born in the 50s and I've never heard NI used in those terms. OP, I suggest you read about the start of the Welfare state and why it was created. You are not coming across well. No doubt, you don't care

All the world has no problem with the EU, it is just the UK for some reason.

But then it is spelt incorrectly. Phonetically, “soch” is a nonsense. Maybe OP is 7 years old or something. 🤷‍♀️

Indeed - it should, phonetically speaking, be spelled ‘soche’, shouldn’t it?

Why would any of those things happen to the OP? Sounds very far-fetched.

I posted. I think it’s a shortening of ‘social’. A verbal thing.

Griffindor1979 · 28/01/2026 08:59

Not to mention that ‘social’ if that’s what the OP meant, doesn’t pay for the NHS.

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:15

No but it would be a good idea to keep something like that on my ID

So if you’re in, say, a rail crash or a road accident, you’d like the rest of us to just leave you lying screaming in the wreckage? Right.

ResusciAnnie · 28/01/2026 08:58

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:27

Stop being facetious. You all know full well what soch/sosh is.

Many people on here weren’t even born pre-2001. I was 11. So no, I didn’t know what ‘soch’ was before this thread, have never heard of it before, and google didn’t come up with much. So just as you can call people facetious, people may think of you as cantankerous/stuck in your ways/fuddy duddy.

SurferRona · 28/01/2026 08:57

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:13

It’s self explanatory

It really isn’t. Do you need help with literacy?

supersop60 · 28/01/2026 08:49

That’s how I’ve interpreted it - like shortening Gary to Gaz. The OP’s superciliousness over the fact that the rest of us prefer to communicate in proper written English rather than informal text speak, doesn’t really lend her comments much intellectual robustness, does it? Trying to explain the values and the economic underpinnings of a social system predicated on everyone paying in, to someone who calls it ‘the soch’ is a waste of our time, I think.

Am going to go and do my ironing instead.

60, and never heard of this term, and I'm pretty switched on.

Never heard it either.

I always thought that was the intent of National Insurance, to cover the 5 elements of the Welfare State; Social Security, Health care, Education, Housing, Employment.

kerstina · 28/01/2026 08:52

YABU and selfish . Also you might not think you will need the states help in your life . I am all right jack but you might one day .

So not even a proper term. @slozenger I think you need apologise to people who you ridiculed because they didn’t get your slang

cupofrealtea · 28/01/2026 08:50

You simply can’t opt out of the NHS in this country. It amazes me people think they can. Even in the cities there isn’t a good enough emergency response service. Private hospitals regularly hand over people who need intensive care. Sure opt out but you’re only a car accident or heart attack away from A+E.

supersop60 · 28/01/2026 08:49

Dollymylove · 28/01/2026 08:21

Has anyone found out what soch means yet? I cant be arsed trawling through 100s of posts

CautiousLurker2 · 28/01/2026 08:44

LOL sorry - OP’s posts are frying my brain!

Me too!

Mind you, I've just spotted the title is a discount for not intending to use services. Not not using them.

I have no intention of needing the fire service, police, NHS. I do not intend being seriously sick, injured, or a victim of crime.

Do I get a rebate? Please?

BeRoseSloth · 28/01/2026 08:46

I’m 70. Worked for 40+ years. Never heard of soch.
