White bridal dress or not?

I'm getting married for the second time. How many of you older brides/ married not for the first time felt comfortable wearing white? Or anyone really, what are your opinions on this?

I had a proper wedding dress both times, purely because I got dress number 2 in a sample sale and got it for a fraction of the price.

Wear whatever you like, it's your wedding!

I got married for the first time at age 59. I wore a very pale cream dress from Ghost. It felt very bridal but appropriate for the registry office.

Overtheatlantic · 28/01/2026 17:07

I wore a cream silk dress for my second. I was 42 and thought I’d look even older in a big white dress. It was the right choice for me, and that’s what everyone bride should do!

It did, I actually had two that I felt like was the one. I think I did know I wanted the white/black one but it was so different than what I was thinking it took me a bit to realize it.

But at the time I was dress shopping we were planning a destination wedding to get married on a pirate ship so the other “it dress” was perfect for that. The other “it dress” was more traditional ball gown so they were very different (see pics as examples of two and how different they were). In the end I went to lunch, had a couple glasses of wine, and went with my gut.

Turns out my destination and pirate ship were victims of hurricane Ivan and I ended up replanning my wedding for a local one in a ballroom! So it ended up being perfect 😁

Both are beautiful. Glad you had a perfect day!
Thank you everyone! X

I've been married twice and wore a white gown for each. I don't think anyone sees a bride at her first wedding and assumes she must be a virgin because she's wearing white these days, so what does it matter?

This is the thing isn't it, I have a feeling this might happen. I know exactly what I want already, a very specific dress, but it might not suit me.

When you tried on your actual dress did it make you go 'this is the one' straight away?

Love that you’re going for it @Notaboutthebass ! Weirdly I feel like wedding dresses have a magical power to make everyone beautiful regardless if they normally look good in white.

I laughed when shopping I went in saying I wanted a simple dress with sleeves And walked out with a sleeveless gown with a huge skirt and black detailing so have fun!

Wear what you want! It’s insulting to have our value tied to our ‘purity’ and be expected to declare that by the colour we wear. My second marriage I was asked so many times if I would wear white and then when I wore ivory was congratulated on finding a beautiful dress in a suitable colour. I can’t see that I’d ever marry again after two terrible experiences but if I do I’m wearing a bold offensive colour like lime green or neon orange 🤣

DivorcedButHappyNow · 26/01/2026 21:56

Go to a bridal shop and try a few on. Then you will know.

I got married last May, second time round. We were both 58.

I was convinced I’d go non traditional but then I realised white was the dream. And if you can’t wear white on your wedding day, when can you?

I tried a few on and fell in love with a simple gown with a Tshirt neckline and felt like a queen. With emerald green heels. Had trainers for later and managed a second pale blue silk dress.

We got married in a country village church but small affair. 60. Was a wonderful day.

Notaboutthebass · 26/01/2026 21:20

Thank you everyone. I really want to wear white and before now I never would have questioned it. It's interesting to get views on it, not sure why I panicked.

I don't even know if white will suit me yet! I have medium to dark brown hair and haven't a clue what my skin tone is classed as.

I've also seriously considered getting platform trainers, great idea. Thank you.

You should pick the colour that suits you, I look HORRIFIC in cream. Literally like the walking dead but bright white is perfect for me.

So I wore white all the times I got married.

winnieanddaisy · 26/01/2026 20:38

My niece was married 20 years or so ago . It was her first and only wedding, still married to him . She wore a purple ball gown which was stunning on her as she is a redhead and very pale skinned . She was married in a castle near Scotland and there was very deep snow . The wedding photos are beautiful especially the ones taken in the castle grounds .

AnotherExpatKiwi · 26/01/2026 20:25

Wear what you fancy! I’ve been married once (30 years ago) and had a pale gold dress. White doesn’t suit me.

one friend got married in green, another one wore a red dress. Others wore white. No one cared. Wear what you feel makes you look awesome and are comfortable in.

MrsNathanDrake · 26/01/2026 20:22

I got married for the second time in November. I wasn't planning on wearing white, but my best mate talked me into it and I'm so glad she did! I wore a tea length full skirted retro dress in ivory with a bit petticoat ubderneat and a cropped fake fur jacket and I felt amazing! I certainly didn't feel it was an inappropriate outfit for me.

I got married last year. It was my second time round, and I wore a gorgeous ivory ballgown. I bloody LOVED it.

Im with you, it wasnt a ball gown, it was a corset top, strapless, A line, silk stunning gown and it was amazing. underneath I wore paradox flatflorm pearl trainers, I danced all day, all night, had a great time with my husband, family and friends and never had sore feet. If I could do it all again tomorrow I would.

2chocolateoranges · 26/01/2026 20:17

Wear what you want!

I didn’t even try on any white dresses. White is not me.
I went for gold! Loved it.

I got married for the second time and wasnt going to wear white or ivory. BUT I found the most stunning wedding dress in ivory and fell in love with it on, bought it and dont regret it. If I could wear it every day I would 😂

Wear what suits you the best

7238SM · 26/01/2026 20:12

I've only been married once, but very few bridal gowns are actually stark white. Majority are light cream or have hints of champagne, pink, green etc which wouldn't be noticeable unless next to a stark white dress.

I've had 2 friends re marry- one in her early 40's, the other late 40's. Both wore none 'white' dresses. 1 had an amazing, full length dress. Over 1 shoulder was a ruffle which continue down the back of the dress and made a small train. It was more stunning than most bridal gowns I've seen! The other wore a cocktail length dress which was very nice.

What do you feel comfortable in? Have you tried any bridal gowns on? Would a colour be more flattering with your hair/skin? Would you feel you missed out if you don't have a traditional gown?

Thehop · 26/01/2026 20:02

I wore an ivory dress.

it was the first time of married him. My first marriage had nothing to do with it:

it's the first time for the two of you: wear what the hell you live and enjoy every minute

DinoLil · 26/01/2026 19:59

I wore scarlet for my second wedding.

Bikergran · 26/01/2026 19:32

If white suits you and you want to, go for it!!! Especially if you didn't go the whole hog the first time. I don't see why anyone would object, after all, how many brides nowadays are virgins, it must be a small minority. Before I get a load of US Evangelicals jumping down my throat, I'm talking about the UK.

ACatNamedRobin · 26/01/2026 17:39

I'd had a off-white/light cream dress for my first (tiny) wedding.
I went with a huge white kind-of-meringue 😬 for my second one.
