Kanye’s comeback - will you forgive him? Do you care?

mumofoneAloneandwell · 26/01/2026 15:09

he apologises for his anti semitism and for his harm to the black community

i think he’s unwell but I think he’s a symbol of the terrifying rise of the far right and their ‘family values’

his music will always be legendary but I separate the art from the artist 😬🤷‍♀️

That said, I was expecting a comeback so I am not surprised. It was on my 2026 bingo card

Kanye West apologizes for ‘reckless’ antisemitism in full-page Wall Street Journal ad: ‘I am not a Nazi’

“I regret and am deeply mortified by my actions in that state, and am committed to accountability, treatment, and meaningful change,” the rapper wrote.

If I'd had gone into work telling people that I love Hitler etc, I certainly wouldn't have kept my job on the basis that I was mentally ill. And rightly so, because of the effect it would have had on people around me. And would continue to have, even if I'd apologised

OriginalSkang · 30/01/2026 22:47

kkloo · 30/01/2026 22:41

Why should he?
He had serious mental health issues and so he should hide away in shame and engage in self-flagellation for ever more now?

I genuinely think that attitudes like those to mentally ill people and their actions while having episodes is going to end up being a big conversation in society in future and something to apologise about, it's so wrong.

You are clearly not understanding the scale of the things he said

I had a breakdown a couple of years ago that b I'm still recovering from with treatment. At my worst point and not thinking at all clearly I said some out of line things to some loved ones, and I've since apologised for it. I certainly didn't expect them to accept it though!

OriginalSkang · 30/01/2026 22:36

If he genuinely regrets and is going to be a better person, good for him. I don't think anyone should support him back to celebrity or whatever though! He can make your amends in quiet somewhere if he really means it. Which I'm sure he won't, because I'm sure he doesn't!

My friend who is a consultant psychiatrist thinks that mania loosens the tongue for one's true beliefs. I am not sure that's what I think tbh. Do I think he has a serious mental health illness, yes. Do I think he is sorry for now, yes. Until... the next time he comes off his meds/drinks too much/doesnt sleep for hours on end/smokes too much weed and spirals again.

ETA I didn't realise there was new music coming, the apology makes more sense now.

Is your friend neo-freudian?

Swiftie1878 · 30/01/2026 22:32

Not his target demographic, but no, he’s gone for me and my family (which does include some of his target demographic!)

I honestly give zero shits about Kanye West. I had forgotten he exists. I wish he would crawl back under the rock he has been under for the past 7 or so years.

Maybe he should listen to some Taylor Swift music, to cheer himself up. 😆

Or maybe Beyoncé, I heard her videos are great 🙄
OP - absolutely not. His behaviour is abhorrent, context can help to perhaps understand it but doesn’t mean it can be excused or forgiven.

kkloo · 30/01/2026 22:27

HappyFace2025 · 30/01/2026 21:55

There is no need to be patronising.

There absolutely is when people make comments like yours.

Kanye didn't even try to use it as a get out of jail free card anyway.

HappyFace2025 · 30/01/2026 21:55

kkloo · 30/01/2026 20:12

This might come as news to you but illnesses don't affect every person the same way. Some people will get the worst of the symptoms and have far more extreme episodes.

There is no need to be patronising.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 30/01/2026 21:08

Has his album launched today? Or last week?

I doubt it will do well anyway. I think it’s time to retire and explore other interests, whilst doing charity work and apologising

Tell me you don’t know hip hop without telling me you don’t know hip hop….

Taking it all at face value- because who knows whether he really does have a TBI, or what his particular mental health dx is- I abhor what he’s become, and there are few people in the public eye that I’ve felt more appalled by - but College Dropout literally shifted the dial in the genre- you can’t dispute that

And his music isn’t legendary… he’s a has been who was more well know because of the kardashians IMO.

Not sure…I have a close family member who has had psychosis for several months. Some of the things she has said and done are utterly bizarre but she truly believes her delusions to be real. I would hate people to hold it against her forever.

Unfortunately there are a lot of extremely ignorant people out there.

When you hear of people committing terrible crimes while under psychosis or when they were deemed to have been insane, you hear people saying 'well that's no excuse'...or 'I suffer from my mental health and I'd never do that'.....Oh really? well you probably had anxiety or depression, and you've never actually been insane, no one knows what they would do if they were insane or in psychosis.

I hope things work out ok for your family member ❤

kkloo · 30/01/2026 20:12

HappyFace2025 · 26/01/2026 19:17

Are you a doctor? How do you know if he was having a psychic episode or not? My DP suffers from bipolar. He has never in all the years I've known him come out with the diabolical views that Kanye did. It's about time that people like him stop using mental ill health as a get out of jail card.

kkloo · 30/01/2026 20:11

Never had an issue with him, it was clear he was mentally unwell.

I think in years to come people will be apologising to him like they did to Britney but at the moment far too many have the mentality of blaming mentally ill people for their symptoms of their mental illness.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 26/01/2026 20:40

I can’t forgive him for showing his arse crack on that boat in Italy with Bianca on her knees 🤢

HappiestSleeping · 26/01/2026 20:28

I know his name from the press. Don't know any of his music (I doubt I am his target market), don't know what he did / said.

So @mumofoneAloneandwell I can't say he features in my thinking at all.

Yep!!

The video was literally Nazi saluting. You could probably still find it if you really wanted to, but I dont want my algorithm to think i actually enjoy this shit.

One line that makes me laugh, from the beginning of his career

‘Jesus walks with them. To the hustlers, murderers, drug dealers, even the strippers, Jesus walks with them’

like, huh, even the strippers

the man has a misogyny problem. I reckon the strippers got the ick from him and wanted Jay Z instead 🤷‍♀️

The amount of [misogynist] men who put women who strip, do sex work or simply are overtly sexual in the same “morality” category as drug dealers and murderers is WILD to me!

Aislyn · 26/01/2026 20:15

An apology is a start, but he will be judged by his actions.

He has a platform, and huge influence. His comments have been incredibly racist, and have incited violence on the Jewish community, at a time when the Jewish community is particularly vulnerable.

So no, an apology in itself is not enough.

I also think his music is shit, and cannot separate that from him as he benefits from the revenues from it. I also am cynical that he is only making this apology for personal gain.

I would welcome him saying more than words, eg making a donation to a charity that combats Anti-Semitism, and sustained denouncing of racism towards Jews from himself.

Hufflemuff · 26/01/2026 20:06

He made a song, where the chorus was "Heil Hitler" on repeat.

He is abusing Bianca Censori.

Both of these things go beyond the eccentric mental health episode that you might be able to understand and move on from.

Agreed. And Delusions are real- to them.
