Ontobetterthings · 25/01/2026 08:24

I started down the gym a week before Christmas. Cut alcohol first of jan and been dieting and upping protein. Been going gym 4 times a week. Started weight training and lifting weights. Was feeling good this morning. Weighed in and ive lost 3lbs. Im a couple of stones overweight.

Im really demoralised. All my mates have lost loads of weight on ghe jabs. Im just wondering if im doing the right thing now. Aibu?

I feel you as I am in similar position. Your frustration comes from the that your mates chose the easy way. If I wasn’t trying to conceive, I would have taken the jabs too instead if additive to my plate with gym and stricter eating. I have done it for years but it is mentally exhausting. A jab is not..

It's not the easy way at all, you still have to put the work in (they don't melt fat) and even if it is, so what? Why do people want to martyr themselves thinking, I'll do it the natural and most difficult way. I have trained hard, eaten well and the jabs helped. I'm keeping the weight off by continuing as I did on the jabs.

Givemeachaitealatte · 25/01/2026 16:04

Do the jabs and the gym. That's what I did. I have kept my weight off and I'm stronger.

Bluemin · 25/01/2026 16:00

I have been doing calorie deficiti, upping protein and doing strength training. I've only "lost" 2lbs but my body has completely changed shape and my scales say I've lost a stone of fat and gained nearly a stone of muscle. Gone from 34% body fat to 22%. If it was based on weight only I would be disappointed with 2 lbs!

missmollygreen · 25/01/2026 15:58

Keep it up OP!
4 weeks is no time at all really. Plus the training and protein will be increasing muscle mass (muscle weights significantly more than fat)

I know it is not a popular opinion on here, but I really believe that losing weight with will power and a change of lifestyle is going to be much better for me, long term, compared to using the jabs.

FromTheBlock · 25/01/2026 15:51

You’re not dangerously overweight so I’d stick at it. Join the low carb bootcamp threads on here, you will get fast results! Also whilst the WLIs are great for people who have tried and failed to lose weight other ways, and are risking their health through obesity, a downside that I’ve seen is that losing weight really fast does leave people with a lot of saggy skin and stretch marks. I have a friend who used them
and now has a fantastic figure but it’s really not done her skin any favours at all, she has aged a lot. I’d stick it out longer, it’s only been a month!

Scarlettpixie · 25/01/2026 15:51

I am not sure you will qualify for the jabs with only 2 stones to loose. What is your BMI?

It would also have to be a very expensive gym to be comparable cost wise to the jabs. I have been on Mounjaro for 15 months and am on the highest does. Even with an offer it costs £230 per month! I had 6 stone to loose though. With 2 stone to loose, I wouldn't have used them.

3lb in 3 and a bit weeks is still good, especially if you are relatively new to exercising or exercising more than usual. There can be muscle gain, water retention or inflamation which affects what shows on the scales and should settle over time. Cutting alcohol definitely helps.

Exercise alone won't make up for a bad diet though. Maybe track your calories. Skipping breakfast/intermittent fasting is just a way of eating less so it doesn't matter whether you do it that way, or spread your calories throughout the day.

Presumably if your husband is on WLIs then he isn't over eating and that might help you also stick to a calorie defecit. Google TDEE calculator to work out what you should be having to loose 1lb a week and then do that. The weight you want to loose will be gone by the summer.

Thanks for all the supportive comments I really appreciate it. Ive been struggling because my husband and all my friends are on jabs. Im in the midlands and have dropped weight so easily. I have been finding it hard doing the old fashioned way.

I wanted to do the gym because I really like the athletic thick look so didnt want to go skinny. I thought id lost about 10lbs so was shocked when it said 3lbs 🤣

I am going to take another look at my diet and try the fasting til lunchtime and make sure im not over eating.

Thank you.

Honestly though. With gym work ypu do need to stop focusing on the weight number on the scale and start measuring other things. I am sure you look healthier and you sound like you're in a great place ! Bravo OP !

KimuraTan · 25/01/2026 15:34

These jabs are not healthy without an accompanying resistance training and nutrition programme. Try and take measurements of arms and legs (upper thighs) and midriff. Take three measurements and divide to get the median.

as PP said you are doing very well, try not to focus on the scales. Many of my clients don’t lose weight immediately but they start to firm up and put on muscle, resulting in no actually weightloss as such but rather in feeling their clothes fit better.

Coming back to the GLP1 jabs: they do have a place for those who hi qualify but should be accompanied by a dedicated strengthening programme and support with nutrition. If they are just taken on their own you’ll see a loss of lean muscle as well as fat, each cycle making you weaker (muscle atrophy/sarcopenia) and once you stop taking them you’ll pile the weight back on and so a vicious cycle starts.

I trained (dancing) with a woman who in my eyes was absolute stunner. Had this sex appeal of innocence and awesome curves in the right places.
She wasn’t confident at all but when I trained with her I admired all the above and it came out in her moves.

She was bottom heavy. Boobs, thin waist pretty flat belly and wide hips thick thighs. I shared about my weight issues and she shared she had PCOS and has started monjaro recently.

I was shocked as I thought she was gorgeous and I wanted her body lol

I stopped dancing, but I saw online she had advanced her training a lot. She had dropped 3 stone or more and is still absolutely stunning but her shape is gone.

We crossed paths briefly shortly after and she told me that while she is happy with the weight loss she is actually struggling a lot with losing her shape and is now too skinny….

You have a reason to mar your choice - stick to it and don’t let others dishearten you. Doesn’t make your frustration less valid though

Well it’s obese or 27 bmi wit health conditions and I’ve never ever heard of an obese person who just thought screw it, happy fat, won’t even bother trying, and then the injections came out and thry thought I’d give that a try.

the diet industry is so huge as it’s an impossible task and everyone constantly tries. But if you know a load of fat people who were happy fat and did this as it was easy, then I’m not sure I beleive you. I think you let your jealousy get the better of you.

Jealousy? I don’t care what you believe, please stop talking to me and attacking me.

MonsterasEverywhere · 25/01/2026 15:23

3lbs is great, well done. If you feel 10lbs lighter, that 7lbs that didn't show up on the scale is the health benefits of what you are doing.

Don't forget weight doesn't build up overnight so the best way for most people is to lose it slowly too. Good luck with the rest of your journey.

Ok if you want to look solid and strong then you’re on the right path why focus on the scales, you should be increasing cals to build muscle and lose fat, the scales are less relevant. If your friends and husband want a different body , ie slim or focus on a healthy bmi they are also doing the right thing.

Are you every single person that you know? I have met plenty who got the jabs because it is easier. You don’t have to be obese to be in them either.

OP feelings are valid, as are mine so not sure why am I being attacked? I seem to have hit a nerve when I said they are easier. The jabs are absolutely the easy way mentally.. I have lost 40kg+ naturally twice in my life so I absolutely do now how hard it is to do so!

currently, I am 170cm and 89kg 12UK. It fits more snugly than when I was 70kg but equally my now partner tells me I do not look over 80kg. I did put 10kg in 3 months for no visible reason.

I look smaller and wear a size down from when I was 70kg and didn’t train. My muscle mass alone + bones etc is 60kg. Anything under 70-75 is impossible for me to maintain.

Old school doctors tell me my BMI is high and I need to drop 20-25kg asap. The more progressive ones are more chill. I want to lose it as I feel better about myself and have more energy to train. But I did gain due to stress/burn out and untreated thyroid issues which my doctors ignore.

So I understand. I have no energy or motivation. Jabs will give me kickstart and help with that, but starting a family is more important than my aesthetics. So I just do what I can.

I am in no way attacking anyone who chooses jabs, be it after trying for years or from day one. That doesn’t change the fact that:

  1. jabs are easier
  2. OP chose the harder way first and is frustrated because it is HARD

Fair point. I suppose it's only a small proportion of women who are 5 foot and I would have thought OP would have said if she had other conditions (of course she is under no obligation to, but if someone is seeking health advice it's helpful to have a fuller picture).

I hope my mindset is not part of a trop, but I will be more mindful.

For white people it's about five two where 2 stone takes you from 30 to 25, not sure of the figures for other ethnic groups as I understand the obesity rates are calculated differently. Fair enough otherwise though!

I feel you as I am in similar position. Your frustration comes from the that your mates chose the easy way. If I wasn’t trying to conceive, I would have taken the jabs too instead if additive to my plate with gym and stricter eating. I have done it for years but it is mentally exhausting. A jab is not..

I understand this. I've been thin before.... doing it the old fashioned way. It was mentally exhausting...an endless battle between myself and the food noise. I am happier on the jabs because I no longer have to fight it.

I think every single obese person has tried everything for years. Injections are the last resort, not the first. None of it is easy, no fat person sits and gorges then says screw it let’s take an injection, why bother trying. Every single one has tried everything possible to lose and keep the weight off. Every one.

Depends on height. If you're short enough, two stone is the difference between an obese and healthy BMI. Additionally some people have a condition that means they qualify at 27 BMI, so depending on height may need to lose even less to hit 25.

For some reason people on here love claiming that two stone doesn't make it worth the WLIs, that other methods will be more successful etc, but this is not the case if that two stone makes you obese. It's become a bit of a trop though.

A good weight loss is 1lb a week. So take into account a higher calorie level over Xmas etc, and you’re doing well!! Don’t give up!!! If you’re new to the gym as well, you will gain some muscle. Ignore the scale, how do you feel?

Placestogo · 25/01/2026 14:19

It is not a question of the jabs vs the gym… it is both you need to do, or you will regain everything

Doyouthinktheyknow · 25/01/2026 14:19

I’ve lost 4 and a half stone with intermittent fasting and gym membership. It’s taken a year but I’ve overhauled my diet and it feels sustainable.

3lb weight loss is perfect, slow and steady is the way to.

If a straight choice I'd absolutely choose the jabs over the gym...the gym makes me so hungry

Me too, I can exercise for free, if I couldn’t lose the weight I’d absolutely pick the jabs and exercise at home.
