If we're talking death in ICE facilities, the highest in any single year* under Obama or Biden was 12.

(*I'm excluding 2020, where the number was 20, but half were due to Covid).

Last year, under Trump (while ICE policies were ramping up) it was 32. In the first 3 weeks of 2026 it was already 6 (if that rate holds for the year, it'd pass 100).

I'm not saying that there's a magic number for deaths in detention, at which point an administration becomes fascist, but I don't think you can reasonably argue that the current administration is no different from prior ones on this issue.

As to fascism, the reasons I consider the regime is at least "fascist like" are covered a little more earlier in the thread - but contempt for the rule of law (including routinely illegal and unconstitutional actions by ICE, as part of its current policy) and using the threat of ICE as a means of trying to extort Minesotta for voter rolls are relevant points.

No, but everyone deserves due process and humane treatment. Not that ICE restrict themselves to targeting "the worst of the worst" anyway. They're even demanding ID from anyone with an accent - there is no requirement for Americans to carry ID in their own country, yet if someone with brown skin doesn't produce (or does but the agents don't care) they bundle the victim into a vehicle and disappear them, denying them access to a lawyer or a phone call home. How can you defend this?

These ICE agents are laughing as they refuse people their constitutional rights. The sickos vandalised an stole from shrines to the people they have murdered. They don't care that following a government vehicle in your car is a perfectly legal thing to do, they'll happily put your window in and detain you for as long as they can get away with before releasing you without your coat or possessions into the icy winter. They are bullies who have been given a licence to kill by the federal government.

Let's step away from ICE for a moment - look at the response to the murder of Rob and Michelle Reiner by their son. Any other president would either have said "thoughts and prayers" or said nothing at all. Not Trump, he went off on a self-indulgent rant about how he hated the victim. This is unlike any administration the US has ever seen.

Even abroad we are used to the idea that Americans like guns and therefore people are likely to be killed by guns - but until now we expected there to be a due process to deal with the consequences and we didn't expect the government to announce that law enforcement are above the law.

Shooting people dead is so normalised in your country that it doesn’t disturb you. In other countries, it is far from normal and causes outrage.

You can certainly argue that Americans voted to control illegal immigration, but it's more important to Trump (whose management style is clearly drawn from the mob) to send enforcers to show Walz who is boss. Regardless of whether you think Walz is also a crime boss, Trump's intention is to escalate confrontation and therefore people are being killed. For Trump the only thing that matters is the performance, and it doesn't matter who is deported because why bother with the truth when you can lie?
