Cost of husband’s 40th party

naavaaira · 22/01/2026 16:23

Posting here for traffic.
I am organising a surprise party for my husband’s 40th. He is the kind who loves being centre of attention and would love the surprise! I have never ever organised a proper event like this so have no idea of average cost and your input would be appreciated. I’m looking to cater his favourite Turkish food, inflatable night club in the garden, alcohol, cake, nibbles, and other bits all coming to around £1200 for 16 adults and 8 kids. Does that sound average or a lot?

OP posts:

Oh, youre one of 'those' people that thinks adults shouldn't celebrate birthdays. Only found in Mumsnet land. Thankfully I dont come across any miserable arses like this in real life.

She has stated she's an egalitarian and a socialist. 🍿

HavingABitOfAMare · 22/01/2026 22:56

Some people's lives are this bad.

I get that so maybe I shouldn't have sounded so flippant about it, but even if it is, it's not the OP's fault.

The poor woman just wants a bit of advice on throwing a party.

Greycatclub · 22/01/2026 22:55

People who have wealth and money can still seek advice (not validation) from others. If that’s the believe here then naively you would assume someone with a higher disposable income would never do a price comparison for a product, or search for a discount code and so on.

Yes personally I could afford a £1k plus party too, or more tbh, more equally I wouldn’t pay more if you can get the same outcome for less based on others experience. Let’s remember this is for a one-off event, not an everyday life choice.

Christ on an actual bike.

I've just been out for a meal, came home and caught up and you're still banging on?! 🤦‍♀️

Is your life really this bad?

Best. Response. Today. 👏👏👏

At the risk of getting shot down in flames again I expect the assumption is that those who have a larger income and resources have the self confidence that usually accompanies wealth and money. And therefore don't need the validation of others to tell them they are doing the right thing.

Just googled inflatable nightclubs and they look fab! Smoke, lights and sound system included too. Your budget sounds spot on.
I'd love to be your neighbour, even if I just nosied over the fence and got offered a cheeky drink.
You have a lucky DH. Please let it know how it all goes and post pics! Them's the rules.

You’d love your neighbours to set up a full outdoor nightclub in their garden on the off chance you’d be offered a free drink??
Takes all sorts, I suppose.

It wasn't meant to be " unkind".
It's stating a fact.
And tbh you are assuming I " can't afford it".
Actually my stance is no one and no birthday deserves spending that amount of money on. In my world showing affection and caring isn't about spending large amounts of money.

Why don't you address that question to the pp, including yourself, who are persisting in sniping at me ?

To reiterate:
why can't you disengage?
you're stated your opinion and have been told it was unwanted.
you insist on pushing it.
why?
what are you getting out of it?

Greycatclub · 22/01/2026 22:38

It is utterly bizarre that people who have more disposable income are expected to just never talk about anything to do with expenditure for risk of causing offence.

Sounds fine OP, it’s basically the cost of a meal out per person.

Shedeboodinia · 22/01/2026 22:44

Fully catered with drink, and all the bits, sounds ok. My 40th coat about £1000 and I split with a freind and had a joint party and that didnt include drinks it was venue, cake, food, dj and decor.

Well I do give presents. And we do do special things on birthdays and other occasions. But they aren't necessarily of much monetary value at all.. The presents and any special outings are related to our interests and things we enjoy.

And no i don't like parties. Believe it or not there are a lot of people who don't. You appear to have a very narrow view of what " fun" is.

That’s usually us too. Things we’re interested in. But for ‘big’ birthdays I’d push the boat out a little more, just to make them more memorable.

I wouldn’t say I was narrow-minded, just curious as to how others celebrate. I’m always looking for new ideas.

Why is that a condition? Why can't you disengage yourself?

Use Paper plates rather than plastic

I’m keen to know what you do to celebrate your loved ones special days if throwing parties, going on holidays and giving presents are not in-line with your values?

Also, are you not concerned that one day you may look back over your life and think you didn’t have any fun? Or do you and how without spending money?

I’m always over-spending, so your answers may actually be helpful to me.

OP is the one who started the thread about cost.I fail to understand exactly why.I commented on it.. Apparently it's one of these threads that everyone is supposed to voice the same opinion. So what is the point of it?
I hope she does enjoy the party. Why the need to start the thread in the first place is beyond me.

Do you honestly not know that society is made up of the haves and have nots?

Do you live in a privileged world where you are unaware of the poorer subsection of society?

You call me pointing this out "insulting, catty and critical" . But for a lot of people coming on to MN and starting a thread about spending eyewatering, for some people, amounts of money on birthday parties is actually an insensitive and unpleasant act of ostentation.

If OP wants to spend that amount of money on her H then why doesnt she just do it rather than flaunt it in the face of people who are possibly struggling to make ends meet?

You are directing venom at me. But some might say flaunting wealth is actually an unpleasant and unnecessary act.

You are sounding rather out of touch with reality if you think OP was directing her post at you.

It’s being delivered from a restaurant ready cooked. A fried has baine maries to keep it warm. I don’t expect anyone to bring alcohol I’d rather provide it.

Sounds ideal. I threw a party for my 40th cost about 1200e similar provided chicken curry food nibbles variety of drinks and big cake.
did similar for my husband and we went on a big hol for his too. we moved house shortly after mine so couldn't afford big h asweel
life is short you can afford it. enjoy and have a fabulous time

Just stop. Mumsnet asked the bun fight to stop and you’ve just kept going like a Duracell bunny. The poor woman just wants to have a party for her husband in her back garden. She’s not flaunting her wealth. She wants to do something nice for someone she loves and you’re trying to make her feel bad.

Oh my goodness. MN certainly highlights the them and us culture doesn't it?

I can't even envisage a world where spending this much on a 40th birthday would be considered normal.

Entitlement and privilege springs to mind.

Monstrous thing made me chuckle! £550 for Turkish catering, £320 for inflatable night club, £70 cake, and the rest for alcohol, nibbles, plastic plates, decor and other bits

Your poor neighbours. An inflatable nightclub….
