I have one dated 6th December - I have a habit of buying them and then forgetting about them as they languish at the bottom of the cheese box.

I'll eat this one and I've eaten similarly antique ones before with no adverse effects- I just cook it well.

MissMarplesKnittingNeedles · 21/01/2026 13:05

I’d smell it, and if it’s ok, I’d eat it.

benten54 · 21/01/2026 09:39

If it has a furry white mould like cotton wool or anything black green or pink on or in it don’t eat it. Otherwise it will be totally fine.

Yes I guess it's the chopped one, but I've actually just realised it's the Aldi "deluxe" mature cheddar and chorizo cheese bake , which is not camembert at all , don't why I assumed it was! ( I bought that much cheese over the season that I've lost track).
Do you reckon this is ok? I've checked the date again and this one only went out yesterday. I would be eating at the weekend.

It will probably be fine. We love cheese and I regularly buy nice cheeses from the deli for weekend lunches. Somehow I've never bought a baking cheese although we love toasties etc. Lidl do very good strong cheddar.

Re breaking 'rules' with chorizo, I sometimes buy chopped chorizo for cooking and don't use the whole tub. It doesn't advise freezing but is fine and it's quite useful to have a handful to toss into a risotto.

Subject to it looking and smelling fine, I would, yes.

I firmly believe that evolution gave us the tools we need to sense when food is gone off.

I had one last year that was about 2 months over when I opened it.

What brand is it, is it the one on the black plastic tray?

It was the Aldi extra specially selected Alicia Honey and Tuffle

I think I'm right in saying that all Camembert is pasteurised at the moment because of the listeria problems in France. I'm pretty sure the shelf/fridge life is much more flexible than whatever sell by date it has on it.

Re chorizo, I'd assume that it's chopped chorizo inside the cheese. I think the shelf life of that is shorter than the anything that's not sliced or chopped.

Not a cheese person so can't comment on a camembert but im pretty set by 'use by dates.
'Best before' means it won't be 100% (ie loss if taste etc) but will not harm you if eaten.
'Use by' means there is a risk to health if eaten after the date (obviously vould be extremely minor)
I do agree that the look/smell testing is a good base as well. Ive thrown stuff away that was still in date due to smell/texture when opened.

I'm alive and well my friends! So is everyone else so far ! Haha!

Morning OP. Do you have the shits yet?

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 21/01/2026 00:14

It’ll be absolutely fine. I’d have eaten it.

Talipesmum · 20/01/2026 23:52

Glad you ate it - I’d def have done the same.

Last weekend I made a big macaroni cheese with all the leftover scrag ends of Christmas cheese that were all still lovingly wrapped up in little packages but were realistically going to get forgotten about and go (more) off. It was incredible. I didn’t include the blue cheeses to spare my non blue liking family (ate them separately) but it had ash goat cheese, manchego, a blob of brillat savarin, black bomber, some fancy red cheese, and a knobble of another ordinary but good cheddar.

There’s a big slab of Brie in the fridge too but we’re saving it. My son suggested wedging it whole in the middle of the macaroni cheese. Anyone ever tried that? Baked cheese within macaroni cheese?

I have a little festive cheese board still pristine in the fridge. Looks the same as the day I bought it, can't quite bring myself to throw it a2ay.

I would

Samdelila · 20/01/2026 22:40

Apparently it’s fine to eat - up until the point when it becomes alive.

evermineeverthine · 20/01/2026 21:29

I've still got the chorizo one. Isn't chorizo cured or something? They last months I think?

Yeah I wouldn’t worry about the chorizo. It’s cured. The whole point of curing meat is to preserve it.

evermineeverthine · 20/01/2026 21:29

StripedPillowcase · 20/01/2026 21:25

Yay! I was going to say go for it.

However, was that the one with chorizo? I'd be more worried by a meat product that far out of date, than cheese

Ladies it has been devoured. It was delicious and I would like you to pray for us that there are no ill effects🤣

Of course I didn't check all your posts before sending mine! Glad it was good and I'm sure you'll be fine 😊

Sookie53 · 20/01/2026 21:09

From my very recent experience - I wouldn't. I had one 2 weeks out of date, looked and smelled fine. Baked it and the colour was a little different, smelled like strong brie, tasted strongly of ammonia. Binned it and panicked for a few hours in case I'd poisoned myself, thankfully I didn't get ill!
