To lock the bathroom door?

This seems such a silly thing to ask but I’d appreciate opinions.
If I am going to have a shower or use the toilet I lock the bathroom door. I like to have privacy in these moments, nothing going on just a regular getting ready for the day routine.
My DH says I should not lock the door it’s not normal to do so he should be able to come and go as he pleases in case he wants to brush his teeth or something.
The bathroom is very small but I’m not sure that’s even the point. Is it a big deal if I want 10 minutes privacy to have a shower on my own. He can brush his teeth around that or after his shower. I just feel like it should be respected as my choice. I appreciate some might not care but
AIBU reasonable to lock the bathroom door?

It's not his place to make such a choice for anyone. You're 100% right and he's 100% wrong.

Lock the door if that's what you want, I would - with a bloke like that in the house! He can pee discreetly in the back garden to help the compost heap 😊and brush teeth in the kitchen sink (emergencies only). I would be outraged if someone wanted to invade my personal space like that, especially an intimate space like a bathroom. He sounds vile to me and wants to embarrass you and make you uncomfortable. Ugh.

I remember once as a teenager, arriving home one night, desperate for a pee (no loos on the train). The despair when I approached our house and looked up to see the bathroom light on... "Oh, your mum's just got in the bath," said Dad. 😱 😭 Well, needs must, so I nipped onto the lawn, shielded by my parents' caravan on the drive on one side, and the fence on the other, and did the necessary, washing my hands at the kitchen sink afterwards. Oh, to be that agile again!

I live alone but DP is here a lot. There's no lock on my bathroom or downstairs loo doors.

But DP would never come in when I'm in the shower, and vice versa - on the odd occasion I might knock and say "can I just pop this towel back in there" or whatever, but I'm perfectly happy if he says I need to wait.
There's no way he, or I, would feel the need for constant access and to wander on and out.

I don't think you should lock the door though, for safety reasons. But he should back the fuck off and leave you alone.

I don't use a razor (very old fashioned). And I've never hidden my boobs from my husband, especially as I breastfed for over 2 years. I still like to lock the bathroom door, particularly as I have adult kids. ( & 2 bathrooms)

I don't cringe at other people enjoying intimacy. I cringe at adults trying to do some kind of weird brag about their sex lives.

It's just not cute. I would be embarrassed if my husband said that, in any way other than ironically.

BlessedAreThePureOfHeart · 20/01/2026 09:44

Well I must be really weird because I lock the door even if I am the only one in the house!

It's not normal

I suppose he has "theories" about why bathroom doors in private residences are typically designed with locks on the doors?

I'd just keep locking it and ignore him. He can wait ten minutes or use the kitchen sink.

God no I always lock the door!
The only reason I didn’t in the past was when DC were small and nobody else was home.
Does he lock the door?

LowdermilkPark · 20/01/2026 09:39

Of course you’re not unreasonable! If you like privacy, that’s your right.

We don’t even have a lock on our bathroom doors here, and it is a bit of a free for all. But that’s our choice.

OK, but that isn’t remotely relevant to the OP’s situation.

sightingday · 20/01/2026 09:39

I never lock the door because the kids would break it down to get to me if they thought I was having 5 minutes of peace. OH wouldn’t dream of coming in when I’m in the shower and I wouldn’t when he’s in there unless one of us wanted to chance a quicky if the kids are at school. If one of us is on the loo the other won’t open the door. Yes we’ve seen each other naked, the man’s seen me give birth twice, doesn’t mean either one of us wants/needs to see the other take a shit.

20thCenturyFecks · 20/01/2026 09:39

As a family we had a schedule as to who used the bathroom depending on who did what in the morning. It wasn't difficult for a family of 5 to get into a routine without running in and out of the single bathroom.

Now there's only 2 of us and we have 2 bathrooms which I know doesn't really help the OP. As above though the DH needs to get himself organised. It's really not that hard.

Sassylovesbooks · 20/01/2026 09:38

We don't lock the bathroom door, but do close it when having a shower or going to the toilet. If someone needed to clean their teeth, then they take their toothbrush out of the bathroom, prior to the other person using the bathroom and use the downstairs cloakroom sink. I wouldn't just barge into the bathroom if my husband was in there on the toilet or in the shower.

You shouldn't need to lock the door against your own family coming into the bathroom, whilst you're in there - it should be a given that privacy is respected, regardless if the door is locked or not. A closed bathroom door, should be sufficient.

No, your husband doesn't have the right to barge into the bathroom when he feels like it. You have the right to privacy, which he should be respecting. Is your husband controlling in other ways? I ask because I had a boyfriend who I lived with many years ago, and he would have a strop if I locked the bathroom door. He had other controlling behaviours too, which was driven by insecurity.

Miranda65 · 20/01/2026 09:38

You can do what you like, OP.
We have lived in our house for 35 years, and there has never even been a lock on the bathroom door, so it certainly wouldn't bother me. But you are allowed to make your own choices.

So what's your issue with the OP wanting 10 minutes in the bathroom?

Also big cringe at 'morning loving', you sound very childish, especially as you can't seem to accept that other people have different boundaries.

It's so odd that you keep bringing up sex. My DH and I have sex everyday and we still very easily manage to not use the bathroom together.
