To lock the bathroom door?

This seems such a silly thing to ask but I’d appreciate opinions.
If I am going to have a shower or use the toilet I lock the bathroom door. I like to have privacy in these moments, nothing going on just a regular getting ready for the day routine.
My DH says I should not lock the door it’s not normal to do so he should be able to come and go as he pleases in case he wants to brush his teeth or something.
The bathroom is very small but I’m not sure that’s even the point. Is it a big deal if I want 10 minutes privacy to have a shower on my own. He can brush his teeth around that or after his shower. I just feel like it should be respected as my choice. I appreciate some might not care but
AIBU reasonable to lock the bathroom door?

I personally would not lock the bathroom. BUT I would also expect my DH to knock and accept a „no“!

Frugalgal · 20/01/2026 12:05

You ask whether anyone needs to look before you go in the shower.

I genuinely cannot believe anyone things the OP is being U..

Fucking insane.

And what if no one needs the loo at that time and then all of a sudden after the other person is in the shower they do need the loo? What you are saying is if you're in the shower or bath then the whole time you are in there ppl have to gold bodily fluids and maybe bowel movements in? There's been times when ive had a lovely relaxing bubble bath and ive been lay there and my partner has had to pop in quickly for a wee I wouldn't make him wait as that could damage a man holding it in. Im also not controlling or neurotic either so im not bothered if he pops in for a quick wee whilst im in the bath or the shower im not gonna make him piss in the kitchen sink now that would be unhinged.

Catwalking · 20/01/2026 12:28

NU. I have teeth cleaning stuff permanently in kitchen, so feel I should be able to have locked door if I need bathroom.

Skater78 · 20/01/2026 12:26

DH is a bit highly strung (inherited) and I’m more laid back.
downstairs loo thing is weird, he has a thing about not wanting to smell poo when using the upstairs bathroom, I mean Ideally we’d not smell it anywhere but that’s life. Poo smells bad. I might have exaggerated with only being allowed to use the downstairs loo, he’ll say this is the one we should use and he will moan but what can he do, nothing. Let’s get some perspective, is not nice to be moaned at but it’s not social services territory, it’s someone being a a bit uptight and unreasonable

What a weird response to me.

Nope. Just a factual response to your weird question.

katepilar · 20/01/2026 12:21

Not the point of the thread but its really so impractical to have a loo in the bathroom when living with other people. I prefer to have the toilet separate.

ShawnaMacallister · 20/01/2026 12:20

Anyonecansee · 20/01/2026 12:16

Well, if you were controlling and weird enough to insist upon entering a toilet while someone else is in there and has locked the door to get some privacy in order to brush your teeth - instead of just waiting like a normal person - this would be one solution.

The vast majority would just wait, of course, so no need to move the toothbrush.

It's just a suggestion for the nutters who refuse to just wait the way normal people do.

What a weird response to me.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 20/01/2026 12:20

Seven of us living in my house. One bathroom. We manage without a lock on the door, because we “knock” and wait our turn. If one of us didn’t have that respect for each others privacy, we would probably feel that we needed to get a lock. The problem isn’t the lock, it’s the lack of respect.
I know that some people are comfortable with sharing a bathroom at the same time as their family members, but others are not, and that’s where the respect comes in.

PurpleVine · 20/01/2026 12:19

The downstairs poo thing is batshit. You need to go, you use the nearest toilet. it's literally what the bloody thing is built for.

He sounds like a controlling knobhead. Fine when one or both go out to work, as it's a break from it. What about when you retire - fancy dealing with Mr fun sponge's rules day in day out?

Skater78 · 20/01/2026 12:17

and To be very clear in case it was missed in a previous post he has never complained about not being able to access bathroom when a dd is using it or if he did it would be the context of them taking a very long time not him saying he should be able to go in there while they use it.

What's all this spitting in the kitchen sink? Not in my house.

I have a washing up bowl which washing up goes in, and if we spit in the kitchen sink we rinse it immediately, you know just like we do in the bathroom sink. We aren't spraying spit all over the clean washing up.

Hang on, why does he keep trying barging in first if both you and DC always lock it? That would quickly become redundant unless he was deliberately trying to catch one of you - either of you - out. And he can't possibly have one set of behaviours for you and a different one for DC when he can't tell which one of you is behind the closed door.

i wouldn’t say always trying to barge in. For the most part we use it at a certain time with no interference from anyone else. Normally Dd2 first, then me, then dh. No drama. But this morning I had to get something ready for DD1 and so told him to go first and then when he came out the bathroom said I’m going to go in now. He didn’t mention that he hasn’t brushed his teeth at this point, didn’t say I’ll need to go back in or whatever. So this comes up from time to time but most of the time it’s not an issue because he’s having a coffee or what not when I’m going to use the bathroom.

We don't lock the door but also don't need a locked door to give one another privacy.

I dont either If its just me and hubby home but if I were in there, he would just wait for me to come out, can't remember the last time hes ever asked to come in while im in the bathroom. He doesn't need to brush his teeth while on the loo, he wouldn't want to 🤣🤣🤣

The idea of living with someone who thinks I don't deserve the right to privacy while using the bathroom is horrifying. YANBU at all, this is extremely controlling and inappropriate.

Agreed. This was a controlling tactic used by my abusive ex husband. A total disrespect for the poster’s boundaries.

The13thFairy · 20/01/2026 09:50

You could leave your toothbrush and paste by the kitchen sink.

Why would I though when 99.9999% of the time I brush my teeth in the bathroom

TestTubeTina · 20/01/2026 12:12

Skater78 · 20/01/2026 11:22

We are only allowed to poo in the downstairs loo. Otherwise he will go on a rant about that. He’s weird about bathroom etiquette it would seem

Well, this is the most batshit thing I have heard on here for a while. Who made him the poo police? I would purposely poo wherever if I had a nutter like that in the house. And I'd lock the damn door to do it. If he wants 24/7 control on the family bowels he can go live elsewhere.

Confusedorabused · 20/01/2026 12:11

I domt usually lock the door when I have a shower but YANBU to do so.
I do lock it when inuse thwe toilet though.

katepilar · 20/01/2026 12:10

You should be able to have a shower in private without having to lock the doors.
He lacks basic respect.

Skater78 · 20/01/2026 11:43

Regarding DC, one has her own bathroom (not our room because it’s too small and is a loft room with very little storage) and the younger one uses our bathroom but goes in first early so there is rarely any issues there, she locks the door too, he has learnt they need their privacy and doesn’t mention it. I think it’s just me!
we are lock the downstairs loo, he does. It’s a bit mad. Like I say I ignore it he just wound me up moaning about it this morning.
like I say he would like us to do as he says but it falls on deaf ears. To be honest I feel more sorry for him getting wound up by such stupid shit. He definitely gets it from his parents

Your daughters have to live with a controlling pig who thinks he can tell them what toilet to shit in, have had to ignore his repeated demands on where to shit, have had to train him to let them have a little bit of dignity and prrivacy and have to tolerate being constantly on eggshells because their father tries to force you all "to do what he says" on the daily,

This. Is. Not. Normal. You need to stop making light of this. Just because you've been conditioned to tolerate his awful behaviour, don't think it's easy on them. He sounds appalling.

MouseCheese87 · 20/01/2026 12:08

Our bathroom hasn't got a lock. We'll walk in when the other is in the bath/ shower/ peeing. Only got one bathroom/ toilet and can't be doing with anyone locking the door for ages. We always shut the door for a poo and respect each other's privacy with that but there's been times we've had to go in. Not the end of the world but that's just us.

Orangepate · 20/01/2026 12:08

One of the first things DH and I agreed 30 years ago when we first lived together was that the bathroom was a private space. I might clean my teeth when he’s in the shower, but I have never seen him on the loo and I never want to. Don’t lock the door however, no need.

Gizzywizzywoo · 20/01/2026 12:08

The bathroom door is locked in our house! Cant think of anything worse than someone walking in while im on the loo or in the shower
Plus we have a pre teen girl in the house.everyone needs privacy. Dont understand those who walk around the house brushing their teeth either

It doesn't matter if 4 people need to be out at the same time. People just get organised to do everything they need to do in the bathroom when it's their turn. The only exception is if someone felt sick or needed the loo very suddenly.
