Does anyone else just like being home?

Sometimes it drives me mad but mostly I just enjoy being at home with my dc and dh. Life is hectic with work and chores. I try to keep busy with youngest dc on my days off. Weekends are often taken up with eldest’s activity. We have no family help.

I have lots of friends who always want to plan things. I love my friends and I’m happy to have days out with them now and then be it a spa day or lunches or nights out. But it seems like lots of them are wanting to plan weekends away for birthdays and hen doos this year (abroad has been mentioned) and the thought just fills me with dread.

My dh is a capable father but I’m definitely the default parent and I do have some anxiety about leaving dc. But mostly I just can’t be arsed. I like my home comforts. I don’t want to have to share a hotel room. I like my boring routine and while my friendships are important, being with my dc when they are little is more important. I don’t know how to convey this to friends who see a weekend away as an escape and don’t want to go home!

And dont get me wrong sometimes I want to pull my hair out and think a break might do me good, but I also can’t really force myself to spend money and annual leave on things I don’t really want to do. Is this just me? Am I officially boring?

I think its hugely important to keep up good friendships. Because those years when your DC want your company fly by, and you don't want to be sitting in your empty nest one day, when your job is easier and your DH has less enthusiasm for things, and wish you had someone who fancied doing something fun with you.
Certainly it doesn't have to be trips abroad but a regular commitment to quality time with friends now is a good investment for later life.

NavyTurtle · 22/01/2026 16:17

Most nights I say to DH as I walk through the door, I love being home. My car has to go in for damage mending (not me, bloke at work did it) so I shall take the 3 days off and have no car and not be able to go out. Cannot be arsed with a hire car. Bliss - we live in the middle of nowhere - my DH has his own van for his work. I am so looking forward to it. Will hardly dent my seven weeks holiday that I have this year.

LancashireButterPie · 20/01/2026 08:50

We have a motorhome, go away every month or so and somewhere sunny at least once or twice a year.
I have lots of friends but in all honesty, the thought of a girly weekend away would fill me with dread. I love a days shopping, the races, lots of lunches, spa days, all fine. I do weekends away with my sister and my daughter but not really with friends.
Do what works for you OP.

Not really because home meant jobs to do so I have always avoided. Thankfully a non issue now as i have a house husband, rather dh retired and does all housework, highly recommended 😁

Bbq1 · 20/01/2026 08:39

As I say I do love trips out, holidays and meetings friends occasionally for coffee too although thats often at home.

@Bbq1

such as? What do you do? Besides cleaning and tidying? I guess watching tv, reading, crafts, gardening in summer but anything else?

Writing, shopping, having family over. Going to the Gym if that counts as I couldn't do that if I wasn't at home. Gym and working 2 days is in an effort to manage chronic pain as a result of being diagnosed with cancer twice and treatment including a transplant. I enjoy reading and crafts yes but only watch a bit of TV during the day, if any. I also enjoy Audio books. I do courses at my local Adult Education Centre once a term. I've done 4 already and starting my 5th next month. Things like Creative writing and Calligraphy. I do tidy and clean but that's far from top of the list.

Wapentake · 20/01/2026 08:36

Well, I think it sounds spectacularly dull, yes, but you do you.

Cherrytree86 · 20/01/2026 08:12

@silverringpoles

why?? Surely you like your friends and enjoy seeing them?

Yes of course but I also love a sudden unplanned opportunity to stay at home and do nothing. It probably boils down to personality type. I’m likely an ambivert - I enjoy seeing people but I get my ‘energy’ from unwinding at home.

popcornandpotatoes · 20/01/2026 08:32

Only if I'm home alone 😂 with DD I try and strike a balance of out doing stuff and home to relax. If we have a whole day stuck in I do the dog walk and go to the gym while DH stays home, I get cabin fever if everyone else is hanging around too

I enjoy going out with my family or going on holiday. I only work 2 days a week (after working ft for years) but I love being at home. I can find loads to do. I have colleagues who say they are bored after being on leave etc. I could never be bored at home, I can find plenty to occupy me both in and out of the house.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 20/01/2026 08:16

Totally normal when life is otherwise hectic. Don’t feel guilty for wanting to relax in the comfort of your home, it is difficult to juggle everything all the time, keeping everyone happy and included

Nomedshere · 20/01/2026 08:16

I am not fond of going out at night. But I love being out and about in the day and then returning to my beautiful home. I balance seeing people with a few days of not seeing people. And I never see people out of duty.

@jessiefletch89

just out of interest, when you say ‘home comforts’…what are you referring to? Surely whatever hotel you’re staying in or wherever has all the same or similar stuff in it as to what you have at home?

and you don’t need to clean at a hotel like you do at home!!

One of life’s greatest reliefs is having planned to meet up with a friend…and then they have to postpone or cancel. The sheer loveliness of knowing I can stay at home instead is just bliss. 😀

Ours 3 had 15 min reading daily and 3x10 min math split over week in primary school.
I think it was nice to see them work and to sit with them.
I think they benefitted from it.

CosyBungalow · 20/01/2026 08:02

I live alone, am fortunate enough to be able to work part time, and love my time at home. I have a handful of like minded friends locally, and no one is forever planning stuff. When we meet it's all very low key, maybe once a month.
I have 2 seperate weeks away abroad each year, and that's enough for me.
I had a very 'full on' job until my late 40s - shifts, call ins, unexpectedly working late as something has cropped up - so now I very much enjoy the peace and quiet.

coolcahuna · 20/01/2026 07:53

I love being home but also love having the odd plan with friends. Maybe just be a bit selective on what you decide to say yes to.

jessiefletch89 · 20/01/2026 07:33

I like these things too. I don’t mean literally never going out I just mean going away without my family and constant nights out and so on.

I also don't like constant nights out, in fact I rarely go out at night. I do the cinema and meals early. But now my DS is older I really enjoy a few days away with my friends or my sister, and go away once or twice a year on my own. DH and DS enjoy a different kind of holiday to me so it's a chance to have a 'sun and sea' break which they don't really like. I love sea swimming so love a chance for a few days on a nice beach. I didn't notice if your kids are young, I think that makes a big difference to if you like to get away on your own.

billiongulls · 20/01/2026 00:04

No, I can't really relate to this. Sure, a relaxing day at home is nice now and again, and I love my house. But I also love holidays, days out, gong to the park, eating out, meeting friends, the cinema, the beach, going for a walk, and lots of other activities. I try for a balance.

I like being at home and am secretly quite pleased when plans get cancelled 😂, but...I do love going on holiday! At home, I look around and things need doing-cleaning, tidying, gardening etc. on holiday-I can look around and if something needs doing, it's not my problem!

I am retired. I like to go out in the afternoon. Apart from that, mornings and evenings, I like to be at home.
