Have we got nothing better to think about than Greenland??

I cannot believe this is dominating the national discussion.

The NHS is fucked
Thousands of undocumented people are entering our country (directly causing an increase in racist sentiment)
The UK is seen as being on a downward spiral in general

Let Denmark work it out.

Surely we have better things to be focusing on!

I fear for your level of understanding if geopolitics if you cannot see how absolutely worrying this is.
It breaks all treaties and conventions and means the most powerful country on earth. The one who spent the last eighty years helping keep world order has decided they can do whatever they want. After this what is to stop China or Russia or India to follow suit.
Also this would be the first time in its existence that a NATO country attacks another NATO country. Thats is terrifying.

trappedCatAsleepOnMe · 19/01/2026 13:55

I think many of us have capcaity to worry about multiple things at the same time.

NATO is over if US invades Greenland - that something that will massively affect defence and defence sepending in this country. Also affect international relationships - also looks like it will be another thing affecting trade with US - and frankly another thing that could hasten US financial crash with their insane debt levels- their treasury bonds could be dumped in reponse - which like last depression will have world wide impact.

Quine0nline · 19/01/2026 13:55

Look at a world map. Greenland like it or not is in a strategic position, particularly with icemelt. In the same way as the UK blocks entry/exit to the Baltic.

An increased NATO presence in Greenland makes sense. A takeover which destroys the alliance or internal conflict weakens NATO.

Time to reread "ref storm rising" by tom clancy.

Mranke · 19/01/2026 13:55

Im not saying it’s not a concern.

Let Europe work it out.

Greenland's part of NATO. If a foreign power invades and Article 5 is invoked, all NATO countries including the UK are treaty-bound to defend the attacked territory as they would their own territory. So if you think there's no chance of a foreign incursion any time soon, then I can see your point that it might be a distraction. But there are signs that an invasion or other foreign interference is likely in the near future, it's pretty serious.

It's even worse for the USA, though, as they're going to have to figure out how to BOTH invade AND defend against the invasion. (I'm guessing it'll be like the punitive tariffs, where everybody and nobody pays them at the same time).

The NHS is not fit for purpose.

It took me 18 months to get a diagnosis for something relatively straightforward.

Sometimes that happens - the human body tends to produce similar symptoms for multiple ills.

Greenland is a big deal as it might end a peace system that has worked for Europe for 75 years, all on the whims of an absolute nutter. There's your downward spiral. Try looking beyond the end of your nose.

Waiting times are reducing a lot. I had amazing treatment from the NHS including a CAT scan on entry to A&E which would have cost me thousands otherwise. Stop complaining. We are so lucky.

Awww OP. Bless. Maybe do some research into the ramifications of this geopolitical tsunami before you step on that soap box. Naive ignorance isn’t a good look. 😅

Thats all it is though . Discussion. Bored of hearing the discussion... good to see News

Fimofriend · 19/01/2026 13:53

So if it isn't about something that influences your life right now, the newspapers shouldn't write about it? All righty, then ...

Severntrent · 19/01/2026 13:53

Its a challenge to the global order and international relations, which has serious implications for the UK as well as other countries. Tariffs would also affect us.
Also, its news - as in a changing situation and quite novel, so it will get more media attention than things which have been about for a long time like problems with the NHS.
That doesn't mean its more or less important to us as individuals than other current issues, but it is likely to get more coverage while its a live issue.

Overtheatlantic · 19/01/2026 13:52

“Waaaa waaaaa! I didn’t get the peace prize so I’m going to invade gweenland!” Shakes baby fist in the air. Shits his Depends.

IAmNotPrepared · 19/01/2026 13:52

International instability is generally something to be concerned about, particularly when it involves the US and other NATO countries. We can be concerned by more than one thing at once.

TheNextStationIs · 19/01/2026 13:52

Yeah, I think the President of the US apparently being an unstoppable, power mad, petty ("it's not fair you didn't give me the Nobel Prize") landgrabbing lunatic with nuclear weapons worthy of comment.

Clearinguptheclutter · 19/01/2026 13:52

It’s not about fucking Greenland. Well it partly is, but a potential trade war and/or disintegration of NATO is a huge deal.

if we lose the US from nato Putin will be rubbing his hands with glee

there are many many ways this could lead to ww3.

Are you really not capable of thinking about more than one thing at once?!

Yes, all those newspapers famous for only ever printing one story at a time…

cromwell44 · 19/01/2026 13:52

Show that you have no understanding of geopolitics without saying it..

Sprogonthetyne · 19/01/2026 13:51

A potential war between Europe (which we are part of, geography if not politically) and the US is a pretty big deal. It doesn't mean the other things aren't important, just that it is currently the most acute.

In the same way diabetes or a heart defect might be your most important health issues, but if you brake your leg, that's probably what the Dr is going to be talking to you about that week

Bearbookagainandagain · 19/01/2026 13:51

That's not how the world works.

Mranke · 19/01/2026 13:51

Cluborange666 · 19/01/2026 13:49

Shall we hand it over to the orange baby man then? The NHS is working better now than before btw. As for the Farage ferries, who wrecked the Dublin Agreement? Maybe get him to come up with the solution (spoiler alert: he doesn’t have one).

I mean, why worry about the NHS or the general state of the UK, just worry about yourself. We don't need to concern ourselves with anything bigger than our own lives. Stop thinking although, that's better.

🙄🙄🙄

itsgettingweird · 19/01/2026 13:50

If i were you I’d have better things to do with my time - like educating myself about why it matters.

NATO is meaningless if the member states start invading each other.
