Not a brag in the slightest! And wouldn’t discuss this non-anonymously.

DH earns just over £250k per year. Has fallen into the role really and is based on natural ability/talent as oppose to lots of hard work and training. He works very long hours though. I’m a SAHM to 3 young children.

Take home is approx £12k per month.

School fees: £3,000 per month
Mortgage, car and bills: £3500 per month
Personal savings £2000 per month
Kids savings: £450 per month
DH and I take: £500 personal money each per month
Leaves us with £2,000 per month for general spending, food shopping, days out, holidays, children’s clothes…

We don’t really go without, but we don’t feel “well off” by any means. Where are we going wrong?!

🤣🤣🤣

DizziLizzy · 18/01/2026 20:01

£2.5 K to survive the month? For 5 people? Whilst saving £2.5 K ?

You seriously don't feel well off? Even with a spendy amount on food shop etc you've still got £1.5k..... Hmmmmm

noctilucentcloud · 18/01/2026 20:01

You are able to save £3,350 a month, have £1000 fun money, £3000 school fees and £2000 for everything else. And on one income meaning you can afford to be a SAHM. If this is real, you need to seriiously realise your privilege and how high your house hold income is.

Bdrgvlugcbu · 18/01/2026 19:59

Maybe having lots of money left over each month?

You have £2.5 k left over each month 😂😂😂

YANBU. Things have become very difficult recently with cost of living increases. We have had to cut back trips on both our jet and yacht in the last year due to increases in the cost of jet fuel. We’ve also had to cut down on baths as the cost of asses’ milk has gone up over 20% in the last year.

🤣🤣🤣

Just go and work then! Saving 2K a month is having lots of leftover money btw

Foggytree · 18/01/2026 20:00

Start shopping at aldi
State schools will be ok for littluns
They don't need their own savings- the can get paper rounds at 13
Get a side hustle yourself ?

TomatoSandwiches · 18/01/2026 20:00

May I suggest stretching a chicken across the week and growing your own lentils.

Bigtreeesss · 18/01/2026 20:00

Is that it, no wonder you’re struggling
your poor children

as a starting point but a few large chickens which should feed you until summer

WonderingWanda · 18/01/2026 20:00

We earn a lot less but don't pay the school fees or save anywhere near as much as you per month. You've made the choice to spend the money they way you do.

Cappie73 · 18/01/2026 20:00

If you don’t know where you’re going wrong, you must be fucking stupid! Take the kids out of private school, downsize, get rid of a car if you’ve got two, reduce savings per month. There you go sorted.

2old4thispoo · 18/01/2026 20:00

I'm embarrassed for you... 🫣

🤣🤣

Maybe having lots of money left over each month?

But you save almost 30,000 per year which is more than some people earn!

You save £2k a month though is that not a lot leftover?

Despite what you 'feel', you are well off.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 18/01/2026 20:00

Clearly no amount of money would be enough for you OP. You are going wrong by being ridiculous.

Dolphinnoises · 18/01/2026 19:59

Well, you are in the process of having your frequently massaged-arse handed to you, obviously. But the problem is that you are bringing in £12k a month and only spending £2k of it on the essentials. You’ll be glad you saved, doubtless, and your school fees won’t last forever.

Writing this on MN is where you’ve gone wrong!

lap90 · 18/01/2026 19:59

Go back to work 🙄

Yeah this.

And take your kids out of the school that’s failing to prepare them for the country they actually live in.

bombastix · 18/01/2026 19:59

Reduce your cocaine budget for starters

DustyMaiden · 18/01/2026 19:59

Where you are going wrong is putting savings as an expense.

nightmarepickle2025 · 18/01/2026 19:59

SlipperyLizard · 18/01/2026 19:59

Just spitballing but perhaps spend some of the £2k a month you currently save? Or put your kids in state school? Or buy a smaller house?
