Terms used by "influencers".. Arrrghhh!

Browsing at my Instagram this evening and feel a need to have a rant lol.
Influencers talking about Sunday night "reset" in videos about simply planning for the week ahead. I mean mundane things like ironing school uniforms, tidying up the kitchen.. Just normal tasks that are familiar to most of us. Why call it a "reset"?

Similar is when an influencer is posting videos of themselves in new clothing items.. Lets say new shirt or jacket etc. They call it a "piece". As in I got this piece in x shop..
Why not just call the item whatever it actually is?

“She doesn’t know it yet but…..”

X is going to ask you to do something, it’s very important you say yes”

and the nails tapping 🤢

AAAAAAH FUCK OFF

Oh God, this!

That hand movement they do, like imitating a sock puppet. 🤏 like this but with all four fingers meeting thumb.

Also, holding things up to the camera with the palm of the other hand as background when totally unnecessary.

Actually, all or each other’s affectations that they copy. And I only ever see them in recipe reels on Facebook! Don’t even have any other SM so am guessing they’re rife there if they’ve made it over to my ancient FB page.

What is the hand movement thing?
I feel more and more old 😆

Thedownwardspiralpath · 19/01/2026 01:03

“ Food of the gods” 🤢

DiscoBeat · 19/01/2026 01:02

canklesmctacotits · 18/01/2026 19:37

Also, “I was today years old when…”

This one drives me insane!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 19/01/2026 00:59

Anything ASMR style. And the clacky nails thing. Has the same effect on me as chewing tinfoil. I only have FB and have been trying to train the algorithms towards art and craft stuff and they even do it on that, particularly junk journaling stuff. Drives me insane!!

03cg73 · 19/01/2026 00:51

why does everything need to be “aesthetic”??

why are they always in an era “I’m in my matcha era”

why are they always a girly? “I’m a baggy jeans girly”

ughh

Sesame2011 · 19/01/2026 00:44

When they film themselves waking up in the middle of the night with their baby (I have a baby so it's all over my algorithm) but lo and behold the camera and ring light were already set up and running before she even woke up 😂

I work in design and ‘colourways’ has always been a phrase. It’s been around since the 1940s.

I’m an archaeologist but I’m not opening up a test pit every time I plant a tulip bulb

Language moves on across the years. It’s just the way it is.

Yeah, but some bits of it move on with a really terrible limp and pigeon toes.

Alltheyellowbirds · 19/01/2026 00:20

That reminds me. Referring to makeup items as “she”. Wtf.

"Going in with"
Either a make up product and now seen it used in recipies
So annoying!

Oh god I hate that.

”now I’m just going in with some foundation. Now I’m gust going in with some blusher. Now I’m just going in with some eyeshadow.”

wordledrivingmemad · 19/01/2026 00:16

Influencers + going viral = influenza’s!

Yes but hasn’t colourways always meant a colour scheme, not just the colour of a single item?

Tablescape for setting the table. Station for any bloody thing such as hot chocolate station, pasta station.

Someone on MN wrote about setting up a hot chocolate station for her DC. What she went on to describe was a tray...a TRAY with some different flavoured sachets, a can of squirty cream, and a bag of marshmallows 😡

edit and some mugs

When they try on outfits and do really over expressive facial movements and jump up & down like a kid when they apparently like something. Drives me insane. Still watch them though. There’s one influencer who’s style I actually like but she does this little kick at the end of each reel. Gives me the rage.

Oh my god it’s not the one who swoops her leg across the other leg every single time is it? Lydia something or other, drives me mad.

This is more of a what they do rather than say but when foodie influencers take a bite of something they close their eyes, dramatically toss their head back and proceed to repeatedly point at the dish with their fork whilst nodding emphatically. Every single one of them. Every single time.

Fucking THIS. And the hook finger under the nose.

I swear an entire generation, maybe 2 have had their brains scrambled by that absolute shit.

“Chef’s kiss” 🤮

Yes,actually saying it instead of just doing it, utterly bizarre!

And not a phrase but the tapping of products with nails drives me mad!

Oh yes 100% agree. So unnecessary and irritating

SorryNotSorry00 · 18/01/2026 23:42

I completely agree with you and to me it seems to come from the Americans desire to label everything. This and other fake nonsense is why I can only take instagram in particular in very small doses.

It also comes down to the simple fact that the majority of people are effing idiots. Which is probably why I prefer animals (I don’t have children)

EverythingIsComputer · 18/01/2026 23:42

They’re just desperately trying to stay relevant, cringeworthy.

EscapedTurkey · 18/01/2026 23:35

I just think of it as chores !

oh and a piece in Scotland is. Sandwich/snack. Haha !

ArcticBear · 18/01/2026 23:29

The way everything is now ‘paired.’ It never used to be. You’d just put things together.
But no, now everything is paired : clothes, drink mixtures, food. It’s very annoying. 😠

JemimaTab · 18/01/2026 23:25

JuniorMint14 · 18/01/2026 19:42

And not a phrase but the tapping of products with nails drives me mad!

This! It drives me mad, so annoying.

Also when they have their sleeves / cuffs pulled right up over their hands. I don’t know why but that really irritates me and they all do it.

Mommybunny · 18/01/2026 23:22

I’m seeing a lot of “truly” lately. “Gatekeeping” (as in not doing it) seems at least in my YT feed to be ebbing.

MissAmbrosia · 18/01/2026 22:58

I don't follow these people on SM but the ones I have seen in RL....just fuck off and get out of the way!
