I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

Maybe she can and you can't?

Thank you. It helps that I was taught right from the start to drive by listening to the engine noise.

When I took my test the examiner told me to start the car and move off and I didn't. He repeated his command, sounding a bit annoyed and I explained that I hadn't started the car because Concorde was just going over and I couldn't hear the engine noise.

He was so impressed, a young woman using the engine noise to drive by, I swear it's why he passed me 😆

I’m sorry but this is rubbish. I’ve driven many different cars over many years and I wouldn’t for a minute suppose I could tell the difference between 30 and 32mph by engine noise.

It's not "the difference between 30 and 32", it's the fact that your speed is creeping up that you hear and feel.

I'm sorry you can't do it, it does depend a lot of the car as well.

Experienced drivers learn to judge their speed by the engine noise, I can even do this in an electric, though my ID3 was a lot better for that than my current EV3. It's a lot easier in a diesel/petrol with actual revs to hear.

You don't have to glue your eyes to the speedo. You set your speed at the speed limit and you check with a quick glance now and then if you're creeping up. You learn to drive without creeping up.

I do love the thing in my current car where I can tell it to follow the car on front at a certain distance, but not go above the limit even if the car in front does.

We have to glue our eyes to our speedometers, as well as potholes.

Just drive under the speed limit if you don't want to get a speeding fine.

Not necessarily. The cost per mile could be linked to income.

Still a bad idea?

Yes. Intrusive. And also a way for the state to prevent us moving about as much as we do now. A step on the road back from the freedoms we now have.

All the self-identifying saints lecturing OP about following the letter of the law and thanking her lucky stars he "only" gave her a verbal warning when he was "only" on a power trip.

No, that's just something you have invented.

Like you invented an extra policeman ( despite the OP stating it was one), not one but 2 makes of car that won't go up a hill at 20 mph and that he was hitting targets despite her getting a warning.

It is possible to have been done for speeding ( as I have, my fault for being a dick) yet still accept that a warning for being a small amount over the speed limit is acceptable, as I do.

You clearly have an axe to grind. Entertaining mind, I will give you that.

They were SHOCKED🤣😅 were they shaking too? Have they managed to calm down now?

Only overreaction I see is from your camp.

Op has disappeared

Why is it an over-reaction to say it’s unjustifiable and heavy-handed for the police to stop and detain (at the roadside) a person for going over a 30mph limit by 2mph?

Despite what some posters on these sorts of threads say, minor speed breaches are very common, the norm. We don’t live in a police state and we should be careful not to allow it.

It seems perfectly acceptable to worry about the surveillance state. So what’s wrong with being concerned about police encroachment on our lives?

grumpygrape · 21/01/2026 09:02

Yup, I'm out of here now - just going round in circles.

Not surprised with the amount of moronic responses she has had on here.

Yes - she was 2 mph over the limit.
Complete power trip.

When I mentioned this to my DH and DS they were both shocked and said the policeman was a dickhead and they're right. I'd love to know how many men have been warned about being 2mph over a speed limit.

Yes, its a thing (offence!). I got exactly this but a fine in the post - pay the fine and take a speed awareness course, or accept 3 points. I took the course. It did seem excessive, but your speed dial would have said 35, as there is a little tolerance. It's seen as a joke in my circle, as i'm definitely a bit of a slow old pootler! Even funnier than that is a year later i got another, exactly the same, except now i have 3 points on my licence, as you cannot take another course in less than 4 years i think it is, and must pay the fine and take 3 points fpr that offence! It has scared me, in that for just lapses of concentration it is so easy to stray just over the limit, and it would be incredibly easy in this way to acquire 12 points and lose my licence. But, on the speed awareness course they do teach you the difference in hitting a person when you are doing just 2 or 3 miles per hour more than you should be, really does affect their chances of survival. Still does p me off though when i am doing the speed limit and cars overtake me all the time, i am clearly annoying them. Don't they have any points?? And why not?

askmenow · 21/01/2026 01:18

OswaldCobblepot · 17/01/2026 13:06

I'm surprised they've got time to pull someone for doing 2 mph over the limit. No officers available to deal with burglaries, robberies etc but happy to allocate resources to this?

Exactly this. ☝️
Tell me you’re white and thus confirm you’re of the persecuted majority!

Two tier Kier, two tier policing. We have a corrupt police force picking the low hanging fruit but anything criminal and more difficult, they actively turn a blind eye to.

Just look at Birmingham and Maccabee.
Says it all. I wouldn’t trust them to wipe their noses.

Road pricing penalises the poor whilst not inconveniencing the rich. Bad idea.

They could easily be adapted to enable road pricing.

Which might not be a bad thing when considered against the clumsy attempt currently being proposed.

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:08

oh give over. If I was doing 35 I’d understand but a couple of MPH on a clear road with a slight downhill isn’t speeding.

Yes, it is. The speed limit is 30. That the weather is fine, or that it's 2 a.m. or whatever, the speed limit is 30, no ifs or buts.

Grammarnut · 20/01/2026 22:11

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 18/01/2026 09:50

The police concentrating on a dangerous stretch near you sounds very sensible.

But there’s no reason to think it’s in any way relevant to the OP.

I don’t think anyone objects to low speed limits, bumps, width restrictions, cameras, signs, road markings or anything else in accident black spots like blind corners.

But her speedometer would read 35 or so. Which means she should have known she was over the limit.

Grammarnut · 20/01/2026 22:09

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:05

Because it’s a slight downhill?

So you apply the brake gently. And change gear if not an automatic.
As someone else has pointed out your speedometer would be reading 35mph and you should have slowed down.

HomeTheatreSystem · 20/01/2026 15:42

dialdrunkforyou · 18/01/2026 13:40

Well the reason she was hit was because the driver bent down, not because he was speeding.

The coroner, who will have oversight into the causes of many accidents like this one which resulted in a needless fatality, determined that had the driver been within the speed limit, regardless of any other factors, the victim would probably have survived the impact, but you, with your own non-existent competencies as a driver, have pronounced otherwise. The Dunning Kruger effect at its finest.
