My doctor was late to my appointment because he had been at the local country hotel full of asylum seekers...

When was the last time you had a home visit? Is this a way of managing the " problem" by them taking clinics there? Is it a way of hiding this issue? I understood they did not have access to the NHS yet I see massive bags of medicine labelled for this hotel too at the dispensary. We wait about 6-7 weeks for a routine appointment.

The question is why is an NHS doctor out doing home visits at this place when NHS funds are not supposed to be used?

GPs are private businesses. They have NHS contracts but also run private consultations.

It's sad that something like this cannot be discussed properly. I would love to hear what suggestions the insulters have as how to deal with this issue in the long term. Many people are fed up with these issues. I grew up with many people who were immigrants and I never knew as a child that the names were not even of my country. One side of my family are first generation immigrants but the difference is these people worked hard and brought their families. I'm not seeing this right now.

Well as they are banned from working whilst awaiting their case being heard, it's not exactly their fault they can't work! 🤔🙄

EveningSpread · 17/01/2026 14:25

You’re right that the government has a responsibility to adequately provide infrastructure for its citizens, taking into account the need of those who arrive here because of issues like war, poverty, climate change etc.

Your focus on “men” shows you to be suspicious and narrow minded. There are many women and children among asylum seekers. Where they are men alone, it can be because the journeys are costly and perilous.

The problems in the world are such that if you’re going to get angsty about your
GP being a bit late, sadly I think you’re going to find it very difficult to handle the future we all face. Climate change is changing the world for the worst, and we’re lucky that the most obvious effect we can see it immigration. It won’t always be the case.

Tryagain26 · 17/01/2026 14:25

Whatever you say yes it is a goady post and I don't believe you wait 6 weeks for an appointment. You certainly wouldn't if it was urgent. I had an appointment the same day when I had a suspected chest infection and so did my husband
You have no idea why the doctors were at the centre, what the situation was or who they were treating. And I am am sure that your treatment has not been affected because they are also treating other people who need treatment.

You'll not get anywhere with this op, only accused of being a racist! Not that that word means anything anymore.

Quite frankly no we shouldn't be providing any care healthwise for people who break into our country illegally. If I decide to rock up In someone's country illegally and demand medicall treatment, I'm sure I'll be sent on my way and if I move somewhere legally then it's on me to make sure I can pay my own healthcare but hey it seems to only be in Britain that we must give to all and sundry or we're all just dirty racist reform/conservative voters!! No wonder this country is going down the toilet!

Plenty of people who are British going back generations think they are paying their way when they are not. Many people get far more out than they put in.

Because he's working "on the side" during his NHS hours. There were adverts for GP's to do "shifts" at asylum hotels on VERY good money outside the NHS. He should not have been "moonlighting" when he should have been working during his NHS hours.

What are the contracted NHS hours for this particular GP? Even if he was doing private work first there may still be a reason for running late before starting his NHS shift.

hideawayforever · 17/01/2026 14:09

BUT why are they given preferential treatment? yes they should get treatment like everyone else, but why home visits and why paid taxis for appointments, this is the objection, Not that they are getting treatment. for gods sake you can't say anything without being called racist anymore, it's the put down of all put downs used to shut people with a different opinion up.

People have already posted re seeing lots of people at the hotel being more cost-efficient and time-efficient than having individuals come to a surgery (eg transport costs, interpreter costs). As well as there being the possibility of communicable diseases and by going to the hotel a greater liklihood of people being treated.

C152 · 17/01/2026 14:15

What's your problem, OP? Because despite your best efforts, it really doesn't seem that it's refugees, asylum seekers or migrants. Your problem is the broken NHS and an inability to get appointments at your particular practice.

Your "understanding" appears to be incorrect. Migrants, refugees and asylum seekers are entitled to NHS care.

As to why your GP is making home visits -- hallelujah there are Drs still willing to do this! My experience is you've got to be extremely sick for a GP to make a home visit. I'm glad people who need it are getting care.

No you’re not wrong. That doesn’t make me a racist. I can’t get over the naivety on this forum at times.

I know people read the Daily Mail and actually believe the propaganda!

Serpentstooth · 17/01/2026 14:12

Sorry OP, it's unlikely that any number of GPs can do much for anyone with an impaired capacity for empathy. Such people remain bitter regardless of well.-intentioned medics. You can always sign yourself into the hotel as a guest. You might get lucky.

WhyIsThereSoMuchWashingAllTheTime · 17/01/2026 13:49

Do you know how many british people are homeless or living in temporary accomodation. Do you know how many british people can't access a GP appointment in the mad 8am system.

Are they less than human?

Do you know that lots of the homeless want to live that way? They don’t accept help (other than warm meals served to them by us volunteers).

I don’t understand the can’t get appointments, my surgery and the previous surgery I attended had no such issues, no one I know “can’t get an appointment”.

Daily Mail sensationalism makes people think that “others” can’t get an appointment.

Problems in any society are not caused by those with the LEAST power. You're looking in the wrong place.

People like to punch down, rather than look at the actual problem.

Stompythedinosaur · 17/01/2026 14:09

Having worked all my life in healthcare, with a significant involvement in social care services, I just don't think for a second this is true.

No one would tell you why your doctor was delayed.

Asylum seekers aren't given some sort of special "home visit" privilege. If they need treatment, they will be assessed the same as anyone else.

Asylum seekers aren't accommodated in luxury hotels.

Asylum seekers are absolutely entitled to free NHS treatment.

Greyarabsdrinkthewind · 17/01/2026 14:09

Gloriia · 17/01/2026 13:13

He was late. Everyone is delayed because this Dr with poor time management has his finger in too many pies.

Elderly patients with health problems will suffer because of idiots like him.

I work as an HCP in the community I only do home visits. Going into people’s homes whether they be mansions semis or hotels housing homeless asylum seekers (I do everything) is always much more time consuming than sitting in a consulting room calling people in. My colleagues and I are frequently delayed for a whole raft of reasons outside of our control. What looks like a 10 minute pop in visit can often take considerably longer. Poor time management fingers in too many pies has absolutely nothing to do with it.

You can all come on with your personal attacks and insinuating you are a bigger person but there needs to be a longer term plan than this. What would you all suggest happens to these men in the long term ?

This is the post to which I was referring.

Clavinova · 17/01/2026 14:04

puffyeyewink · 17/01/2026 12:59

Have you done any actual research into why they are having to enter the country like they are doing? Because the process to come and seek asylum ‘legally’ is damn near impossible?! Would you put your children through that journey? Most come , want to work and set up home to then bring family over.
unfortunately they cannot work until processed and that takes years. They’re not leading glamorous lifestyles in their one bedroom with no money, completely isolated with locals standing outside every Saturday shouting at them.
The biggest irony being Brexit created the problem (just look at the numbers since Brexit) and I would bet my house that the overwhelming majority of those who are outraged voted Brexit to “get our borders back” 🙄

You want a conversation about it, other than moan, what is your idea of a solution to bring to the table for discussion OP ?

just look at the numbers since Brexit

Just look at the numbers in the EU after Covid. Why is there a steep rise in asylum applications between 2020 and 2023?

It's sad that this cannot be discussed. It's not goady. It's a matter of fact for some people. What is Labour's solution? To build new homes for these men. How do people on council waiting lists feel about this. We ARE allowed to raise these issues.

Never mind all the homeless, sleeping rough in winter. 🥶

GreenlandvsUSA · 17/01/2026 14:03

Well, what would YOU suggest happens then? You’ve asked the question but reading through all your responses I had to come back to this one, because I can’t see any proposed solutions from you. That is because you clearly don’t have any idea either (it would be terrible of me to suggest that means your solution is actually just to take away any health care for all immigrants…🙄).
Theres also the issue of you clearly not bothering to do any research if your own. You asked one pp to send you a link, and when they suggested it was easy for you to find yourself your response showed you clearly couldn’t be bothered. Why should should someone else furnish you with the information? Are you incapable of research? Because if you cared enough about this issue - rather than just coming on to just berate and try to dehumanise “these” people - then you should care enough to do your own research.
eta- your post didn’t attach so I shall link to it in a separate post.
