To think there should be a way of reporting GP surgeries that don’t have online booking available from 8.00-6.30

BurtsB33 · 17/01/2026 08:48

We were told by Wes Streeting that online booking would negate the morning rush, facilitate being able to get GP appointments and more importantly make booking easier. We were told all GP surgeries would now have this.

In reality like many our GP shuts online booking down early in the day. There is no other way to book. It’s far harder to contact our GP surgeries and to see a GP particularly if you work full time.

So if surgeries aren’t keeping to government promises and declaration of what is/ should be happening surely there should be a quick way of reporting them so the situation can be rectified.

But they are supposed to be offering that service. Wes Streeting told us all surgeries now offer those online booking times to stop the morning rush.If they’re not offering them surely they should be held to account and in quick way so NHS users can access the service we were told is available for all.

Also if they shut down the online booking service surely they hold be forced to open a telephone booking service during those times instead.

"held accountable" how?

I'm not sure what can be done really,.if they don't have appointments available then they don't have any appointments

Thechaseison71 · 17/01/2026 09:42

Well that's not really much use if you don't know until the morning what time so u can organize work around it

They are pretty flexible. I’ve spoken to my dr at 6.30 as I was working that day. Also if you know you need an appointment a week on Wednesday, you could make sure you wasn’t working for that whole day.

There aren’t many medical problems that would be safe to just put on an infinite list of people who need an appt. Most problems need seeing soonish so if there aren’t appt available you need to try the next day.

It takes 1 min to fill the form in- can’t you do it on arrival at work before your phone is locked away until lunch?

If it’s that bad a surgery then move to a new one? There are options.

No there aren’t options. If there were I’d be doing them. It’s not a big ask to think patients should be able to log on a complaints list surgeries that shut down online booking services may hours before we are told they are and whose booking facility is dire.

Who have you contacted about your complaint - what was the response?

Practice manager. Nothing

It isn’t going to change - there aren’t the GP’s or funding to support it. Next step is probably privatisation along a US model.

Basically you can’t have an appointment as there isn’t a GP with availability to see you so no point giving you a booking.

DH was a GP for 25 years - am so glad he closed his practice.

So only the people that can get online at 8.30 to book get appointments. The rest of us and our children just get sicker. Sounds great. No point holding GP surgeries to account that do this. C’est la vie, I’m alright Jack.

That’s actually not ok.

We have an aging population. A vast number of working age adults not paying much or any tax. We have low salaries, high cost of living, redundancies, businesses struggling and rising cost of debt. That is what is funding our nhs, so no wonder it isn't very good. I suspect if you did complain, the complaints department would be understaffed and underfunded. It would probably take years for your complaint to be dealt with.

I complained after what happened to mum. Said it was outrageous that people who couldn't get online or on the phone, and then closing the booking once a limit for the day was reached was stopped vulnerable people from receiving care.

This was a while ago, and tbf they did put a note on her record that she is allowed to call any time to request an appointment so she wasn't excluded from care.

Appreciate not everyones GP surgery would handle it as well but its always worth complaining.

now they do operate a booking system thats always open to 6pm. Ive used it a few times since and been seen within a day for urgent stuff, not so urgent within a couple of weeks so the simple, common sense approach can work well. And this is a GP surgery in a shithole area thats always packed so they are extremely busy.

Oh just an NHS basher🤣. Hardly I just want to be able to book appointments at my GP service. I’m not paid ££££ to sort out the NHS, others are.

The NHS really does have an arrogance problem if voicing the need for being able to register surgeries that aren’t providing a basic service such as booking is met with declarations of being an MHS basher.

A booking system that enables patients that work and commute to get on a list, don’t care how long said list is . The current system means you are on no list anywhere and your need isn’t registered
so you’re held further away from appointments. It’s 10 times worse to get any appointment when you have zero way of booking or getting on a list.

You are just an NHS basher and someone who stamps their foot and demands with no constructive ideas.
You aren’t interested in debate or discussion and obviously no wider knowledge of current political issues generally.

No I’m simply asking for a quick easy way to report said surgeries. Not hard and not stamping of feet. There needs to be a record.

All that will do is take more resources into management and away from patient care.

HumbleStumble · 17/01/2026 09:49

BurtsB33 · 17/01/2026 09:00

Not my problem. They are supposed to be running an online booking service from 8.30-6.00. We all get held to account in work if we don’t keep to deadlines. If surgeries aren’t sticking to what tax payers are being told should be happening then surely they should be taken over as per Ofsted in schools.

You don't get it. They don't have capacity. You should campaign for better funding. **

Fulmine · 17/01/2026 09:48

Who do you suggest should take over all these surgeries that are not doing what they should? Does the government have a coterie of spare doctors and nurses sitting around just waiting for the call to step in?

MyOliveStork · 17/01/2026 09:47

BurtsB33 · 17/01/2026 09:41

No I don’t have the choice and frankly being told to just leave if you don’t like crap basic service that goes against what we are told is happening is not ok.

There is nothing petulant about expecting what we were told IS happening particularly when a previous serious has been taken away to facilitate it at cost to the tax payer. Not asking for a moon on a stick.

OP: I want more GP appointments or a way to impose consequences!

IPs: There’s not enough money, GPs or time in day to make more appointments. Consequences won't make that magically appear.

OP: I don't care, that's not my problem.

OP, stop acting like a total toddler.

System doesn't really work. We all know that. Plenty of people are running around looking for answers. Stomping your feet and holding your breath until you pass out won't solve anything, just makes you appear laughable.

This drives me bonkers. I need to book a follow up appointment with the GP for my son. I want the same doctor because he knows the history and background, I don’t want to waste my time and theirs having a new GP who wants to follow a different path or run over old ground , every appointment has to be done in work (and nursery) time and is a real faff. If I phone up in the morning I can’t get an appointment because rightly it’s not urgent, and that GP is always full because he’s popular as so good. But if I phone up for a regular appointment, they get released fortnightly on a Friday and are gone in a split second for the next fortnight. It’s impossible.

Probably easier to get tickets for Glastonbury that get a non urgent, regular follow up appointment at some surgeries.

As a tax payer we expect a lot of things but these days we are left wanting.

I appreciate you ‘want’ to have a certain service as do we all, but these days system is under funded, under resourced, out dated, under staffed, under everything to be honest.
A lot of staff have left because it is such a miserable service to be working in, thankless and depressing when all anyone does who works in it is their very best.

As with so many public services now, they need major investment and over hauling. The statements that you are coming out with just sound petulant and naive.
As I said before, you do have the choice to change GP surgery so if you are unhappy with your current provision, then do this.

Everyone is aware that primary care as is secondary care is poor. We do our best. Are you just on here to bash it and make demands about your rights, or have a meaningful discussion.

Just so you understand my position, I left the NHS because of the pressure on staff and resources and the constant feeling of being set up to fail. We all know what patients deserve to expect but these days system realities are far far short of this and there is no magic wand to wave.

No I don’t have the choice and frankly being told to just leave if you don’t like crap basic service that goes against what we are told is happening is not ok.

Is that the working hours of OPs surgery or are you just guessing?

What annoys me is things live the nurse. My daughter used to be on concrsontracetiveprive injection which needs doing every 12 weeks. Do she's have it and nurse says make appointment for next one. So go to reception and they tell you that you can only book 6 weeks ahead. Do you hp back in 6 weeks that yell you appoints all full. By time you can get one you are then told off by nurse as been more than 12 weeks since injection

I have a similar issue. Have to have blood tests etc every 8-10 weeks. Slots for the nurses are only released for the coming two weeks, as they’re all part time working in rotas (able to choose their days as they please) so you can’t even prebook these types of non urgent appointments. It’s a farce, especially if you work full time. I have to phone in during working hours, as can’t do online…..awkward when’s there’s no place to have a private conversation.

Megifer · 17/01/2026 09:41

constantsparrow · 17/01/2026 09:29

@Megifer, and when all appointments are booked up for 6 months in advance ? 30% of people DNA because they either don’t have the problem any more or have forgotten or can’t be bothered. How is that helpful ?

How will they be booked up 6 months in advance with a triage system?

People log requests. They are triage. Appointment assigned thst day, day after, day after that etc. depending on issue

Closing the appointment request system too early just means people might get more unwell, then they need an emergency appointment or A&E which takes up more resource etc.

My mum nearly died as she couldnt get online and got "computer says no" every time she tried to get through on the phone after waiting an age in the queue at 8am. And every time i tried to do it for her they were taken up within minutes. The hospital were appalled at the state of her when i took her to A&E and said standard antibiotics would likeky have sorted it much sooner, or certainly helped it not get to the critical stage it did.

Maybe thats the aim though. Limit appointments so those who have no one to help just die instead.

Parker231 · 17/01/2026 09:41

BurtsB33 · 17/01/2026 09:38

And let’s not forget people are getting very rich from these software companies providing online booking on the taxpayer dime so surgeries really should be providing what we are told such software facilitates.

You don’t seem to be getting it, you can’t book an appointment if there isn’t one available.

Whats your solution to a lack of appointments?
