Traitors is a negative influence on society

The TV show Traitors is an example of society breaking down not just a bit of fun entertainment. It glorifies and rewards deceitful behaviour. I can’t actually believe so many people watch it and encourage their kids to watch it as if it is a good thing.

I just really hope this is a joke thread because to look around the world right now & think that this TV show is actually a bad enough influence to complain about is beyond tragic!

Way, way more going on out there to be concerned about than something that gets people talking & connecting with each other through a shared experience.

I haven't watched it so I don't know anything about it. But society is definitely breaking down, that I can agree with. It's fragmented. There is lack of community and social cohesion now compared to years ago.

I really believe it, posting because I. Know it isn’t an acceptable view to most people and many will think I’m ridiculous but I honestly think it is a really negative influence.

Think for a moment- as a nation - this is one of the most popular family focused cultural happenings - people choose to watch and glorify a bunch of half famous random people be duplicitous to each other as if they are killing each other. This is what we choose to spend time doing and endorsing. Weird.

It's not family focused at all. I was surprised Thursday's episode was on before the watershed actually. I don't let my kids (both under 10) watch it.

I love it but actually every series I do wonder if it's questionable (Mollie in S2 worried me). Then it returns and I'm always back. And in Uncloaked and after the game, they always seem relaxed and happy. I think the spell breaks when they leave. You have to be the kind of person who gets immersed to play it.

AudHvamm · 17/01/2026 07:59

What will you think when you find out the game originated in a soviet university psychology department 😱

Having played mafia a lot the appeal is in recognising how much your own opinions and biases affect how you see others.

I think people celebrated Alan Carr m the most recent series because he seemed so unlikely to win in that role. If Jonathan Ross had won as a traitor I expect the reaction might've been less celebratory because displayed much less appealing traits in the role.

MasterBeth · 17/01/2026 07:57

If anything, The Traitors is problematic because it celebrates idiocy, hunches, acting without evidence and groupthink. The murder stuff is merely cartoony and silly.

I find it hard to watch it because the legit answer to the question "Who do you think is a Traitor?" is almost always "It's impossible to say because there is nothing they have been asked to do that will reveal who they are."

Until the last rounds, if you're a Traitor, you just have to lie well when you talk about whether you're a Traitor or not. There are really no other "strategies" and it is idiotic to pretend there are.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 17/01/2026 07:56

Do you understand the concept of a game, OP?

And do you actually watch the show?

WhereIsMyLight · 17/01/2026 07:55

People have lied and been duplicitous to get money since money was invented. Long before the Traitors or wink murder. It’s a human flaw that has always been present.

If people cannot separate media from real life, that is a bigger problem which I do agree we are seeing but one show is hardly the problem. That is coming from the influence social media has and the role that traditional media is playing in creating division.

CloakedInGucci · 17/01/2026 07:53

It’s just a rather elaborate game of wink murder really. I don’t think it’s a risk to the fabric of society.

What about the popularity of tv shows about murder? True crime shows/podcasts? Does that show an unsettling obsession with violent death?

FoxFeatures · 17/01/2026 07:52

Has Mary Whitehouse been reanimated ?

TheDivergentEnigma · 17/01/2026 07:51

I dont think it's negative, I think it's interesting.

I like people as a whole, but have often felt that you never really know them and have experienced forming the wrong opinions of people as well as being on the receiving end of this.

This programme highlights this - the faithful getting accused of being traitors based on very poor 'evidence' - no real grounds at all, even by people who have been barristers and senior detectives.

Traitors playing a fab game and not being rumbled at all.

I watch them during the show, and how this uncertainty makes them behave with each other and their inability to read others' motives correctly. Jade is getting a hard time for no real reason and is faithful; it's upsetting her. The others can not give a decent reason for thinking this way, but persist anyway.

None of them even came close last night to picking one of the traitors, which just shows how we as people can get things so wrong.

I just find it so fascinating, also a bit sad, that we can vilify someone, like some are targeting Jade, can't justify it properly, persevere with it and then only to find she is not what they thought she was.

Whilst this programme intensifies stuff like this, society as a whole, I believe, is guilty of this, just on a less intense level.

Crikey. It's a bit of fun. Rather that that naked attraction. Love island or the like

Love Island is far worse I would say!

Dollyparton3 · 17/01/2026 00:25

I bet you’re a hoot at parties OP

🤣

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 17/01/2026 07:47

It's based on a party game (Mafia / Werewolf) that has been around and popular since the late 80s.

Real life is full of lies and liars. To pretend it isn't is incredibly naive. If you don't like the show, don't watch it, but it isn't a bad influence on society - the people taking part are part of society themselves.

I have just started watching for the first time.
What an unmitigated pile of shit TV.
And last nights sad story episode was straight out of the likes of MAFS style playbook

Don't watch any more then, it's clearly not for you.
People like different things.

But to say it's a "bad influence" on society, as the OP has, is over the top nonsense.

Wait till she hears about Shakespeare!

cloudtreecarpet · 17/01/2026 07:39

Oh don't be so ridiculous!

There are FAR worse things to be worried about around the internet and social media than a simple TV show which actually brings people & families together. Its event TV which is a thing of the past and so rare now.

And, guess what, it's just a game! Anyone watching it who can't see that shouldn't be watching it but also probably has bigger problems navigating life in general.

I would argue that Mumsnet, which you are using OP, is probably more of a problem with its trolls and often very skewed advice!

Listenup99 · 17/01/2026 01:16

… and then we all watch and empathise, and pay and congratulate the most duplicitous one at the end? That’s right isn’t it?

No. The point is to get the 'most duplicitous', the traitors, out, so the faithful can win and share the prize. It's literally the whole point of the game, to stop the traitors winning.

PuppyMonkey · 17/01/2026 07:28

… and then we all watch and empathise, and pay and congratulate the most duplicitous one at the end? That’s right isn’t it?

The traitors don’t always win. Have you actually watched the show? Hmm

BCBird · 17/01/2026 07:25

My friend was watching it. I wasn't. After it had finished I asked her to explain the show. We both agreed it was worrying. There will be some people who view it simply as a show. This for me is worrying for society.

Femalemachinest · 17/01/2026 07:22

Don't understand youre "half famous" comment. These are regular people. And tbh the celebrity version was definitely not some half famous people, I was surprised at the big names playing

fouroclockrock · 17/01/2026 07:20

You’re a traitor, aren’t you?

Enjoying the replies so far 😆 knew this would go down well. As I say I do believe it irl but know many don’t agree! I also find rhat show where people marry each other randomly and love island are also truly negative societal trends.

if you met me irl you’d have no idea im this radical btw 😎

I agree. I married 3 random strangers last year alone. I blame MAFS
