To wonder if anyone has or is considering moving to a country that's less likely to be involved if Putin attacks a NATO country. (title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

I hope that if WW3 happened, I'd be brave enough to stay and fight. I love Britain & I'd hate to leave it or see it invaded by Putin.

However, at the same time I'm wondering about the recent rush of articles suggesting conflict with Russia is inevitable by around 2030 and that civilians need to prepare to be conscripted to fight if NATO is attacked. I'd always thought Britain being land-invaded was fairly unlikely, but being called up to fight in a NATO war widens the options of what might happen.

Countries that are less likely to be involved include Austria, Switzerland, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland. I don't particularly want to move to any of these. If call-ups are likely to be imminent in about 4 years, I don't know..

The country I've always thought I'd move to if I did move is Poland (where I have family ties)- but of course that's far more likely to be involved in a potential war!

I don’t think planning ahead is the answer. Trump is possibly trying for that now. No other country can stand up to him and he knows it. I also don’t think any country will necessarily be safe. Many countries won’t just let you move there.

The elephant in the room is the moment things escalate to alarm you enough to leave you won't be able to!

You wouldn't be able to leave the UK nor would any country take you in legally.

One of the first things countries do is close their borders.

So you would need to cross the Channel illicitly and try to avoid being arrested in Europe and interned (if you're lucky).

The chance of getting to somewhere remote like NZ illicitly must be zero.

So truly if you're thinking ahead about this you need to move to your chosen "safe country" ASAP. Get the applications in NOW.

Read some history OP. In WW2 untold millions of people all through Europe were displaced, on the move, trying to find safety. Very, VERY few made it into Neutral countries nor were they welcomed with open arms if they succeeded.

Honestly you're in total fantasy land on this unless you get going urgently. If you're really lucky some country may accept you - but get cracking!

And the neutral countries won’t necessarily be safe either .

Oops

This is a nice haul. I understand why you feel relieved to be far but even though we have the option it’s still nice here and so much to make us stay. I do think about it sometimes though, and make sure passports are up to date.

In the zone if not living I do as the pp and focus more on nature / garden / daily life then worry too much otherwise you ruin your MH

crossstitchingnana · 17/01/2026 08:54

I’m more worried about the US at the moment. I feel like I’m living in an alternate reality.

Bikergran · 17/01/2026 08:53

How old and what sex are you? What do you envisage if it all kicks off, hiding in a safe country until the dust settles then returning to face those who stayed and fought?

hopefullyme · 17/01/2026 08:53

Nowhere would have me even if I wanted to go. All the neutral countries also have different problems to deal with, even if it isn’t war. Climate change, authoritarianism, violence.

FOJN · 17/01/2026 08:51

Is this another propaganda post masquerading as something else?

"Oh no, war is inevitable, where would you move to?" With a reminder about conscription. It's all part of the softening up process so that people will see sending their children to die as necessary.

I wonder why OP isn't asking why no one is talking about diplomacy to prevent a war?

Mischance · 17/01/2026 08:35

A country can be as neutral as it likes and still be invaded by nutters. Nowhere is safe frankly so just live for today .....

Yeah, we really should just let other countries just get on with it. We should have just let the Germans get across Europe, not our business. 🙄

I dont think Putin has the big plans everyone thinks he does. Trump on the other hand …

YANBU. It feels hopeless and I think about it all the time. I wish Starmer would stop inserting himself in Ukraine and provoking Russia. It’s none of our business, and it’s impossible for Ukraine to win without extensive outside support, which essentially guarantees WW3. It’s really, really not worth all our lives supporting Ukraine to save a few regions of their territory.

Wars are always started by governments and inflicted upon civilians. If Starmer and top military men want to fight Russia. then they and their offspring should be first on the frontline.

In theory yes it’s good to help in reality there’s no way Russia won’t get exactly what they want. It would be better to just evacuate all civilians and accept the loss. Rather than spending ££££££ on military assistance to fight a war that’ll be lost get the people out to supporting countries and use that money to resettle them. Sometimes there’s a bigger picture.

I don’t think ww3 will be like the others. It’s more likely to be cyber attacks, cutting off water supplies. Look at the chaos south east water have been responsible for recently! And if there was actual “fighting”, it’s more likely to be airstrikes. Russia isn’t going to come all the way over here and land on foot.
anyway, you’re better off going to a tiny island somewhere. But then you have weather issues, so no where is safe really! Just get on with your life and stop worrying.

Sparkysmum · 17/01/2026 08:30

Sometimes the threat comes from an unexpected place.

MangaKanga · 17/01/2026 08:29

It doesn't really exist anyway as a reason for the USA to fill Europe with soldiers, military bases, etc. Why would that change?

And therefore NATO what?

The second he invades Greenland NATO would surely cease to exist if one member state attacks / invades another?

More likely to be in a war with USA if the orange tw*t invades Greenland & therefore NATO…

Agree. I can’t see it being totally beyond the realms of possibility now for him to wake up one day and think ‘I need a great island, a great place nearer to Europe and Russia to maintain security. It’s a great place and I’m great so I need it.’

Not sure why you would consider NZ but not Australia. If Australia goes to war, I would expect NZ will be right with them.

Why would you expect that? Australia joined the UK, Ukraine and loads of other arseholes in arselickingly joining the USA in the invasion of Iraq.

New Zealand did not.

My DH is a veteran. He served 20 years as a paratrooper. Hundreds of comments on social media from his brothers across the paras and the marines have all said no way would they fight for this country when so many of them have been treated so badly (abandoned with PTSD and left homeless) and with the state the country is in, when we’ve been overrun by people who do not believe in our way of life. Why should they prop up a country when they’ve already done that in Iraq and Afghanistan (twice) and they’ve been let down, cast aside and forgotten? These highly trained ex fighters are men in their 30, 40s and 50s who are the fittest, healthiest, strongest and patriotic minded men you’d ever meet.
These exceptionally fit, strong, airborne hero’s now in their second careers are runners, powerlifters, boxers, firemen, paramedics, police officers, councillors and fitness experts. They can handle guns, they can jump out of planes, they can drive all manner of vehicles, they are survival experts, even more skilled than they were as soldiers.
They won’t do it, they’ll take their families where they know they can look after them (plenty of places in the UK wilderness) so the rest of the country are on their own. Most of the UK won’t want to fight and won’t know how anyway.

I do think being interested in birds or nature or long walks is crucial to staying sane in 2025.

HalzTangz · 17/01/2026 08:17

Nah, I think trump will take out Putin long before any war breaks out. Putin isn't playing by Trumps rules, and trump don't like that

No never think about it.

Don’t even think about Russia much. More interested in the little coal tit that landed on my bird feeder.
