I know I am being wildly unreasonable about DD’s New York trip but I need people to tell me I am

Dd is going to New York for a two week work trip tomorrow. Obviously I won’t tell her this-but I am so scared about her being in the US at the moment. I’m not at all an anxious person and I’ve never felt like this about anyone travelling abroad before. Tell me I’m being completely irrational!

The city is now a totally sterile dull corporate place...should have gone in the 1980's...it was a lot of fun...i wont return as would be totally dissapointed !!

Aethelredtheunsteady · 17/01/2026 17:30

We’ve just been hit with tariffs for opposing Trump’s illegal attempt at seizing Greenland. Is that mainstream media propaganda? What a lovely way America treats its allies these days.

Again, I’m sure this will have no bearing on how OP’s daughter will enjoy her trip but surely the Trump’s America defenders on here have to admit that he is the aggressor here?

You also brought up world cup ticket resales when I told you that thousands of Brits work and holiday in the USA currently. You seemed to equate that with actually there not being any there at all. Which obviously is laughable.
It doesn't even make sense. Yes, there are despite what you think, thousands of british people there.

Google says 120k expats in NYC alone. That's one city!

Yes, of course there are but that's not the question, the OP's DD isn't there and that was the question. Why you are repeatedly informing me of people going to Disneyland I don't know, perhaps it is you that works for the Tourist board. How many Canadians are no longer going to Florida? It's called having principles.

Thank you-I have kept it to myself, hard though it was. I’ve already been told I was showing off my wealth by sending the socks-imagine what would have happened if I’d sent a hat as well!🤣

Today's youth are obviously different, I'd have snatched them out of your hands!

TheJadeDeer · 17/01/2026 15:10

YANBU unreasonable to worry. You are her mum. Mums worry, it’s part of the job description. But she’ll be fine, as PPs have said.

CurlewKate · 17/01/2026 15:06

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/01/2026 14:02

I don't think it's unreasonable to be worried, but probably best to keep it to yourself and add a nice cashmere hat to the socks.

Nah my DD wouldn’t be going unless/until she’s an adult and making her own decisions. I’ve been and NY is a filthy, dangerous, drug-addict filled, rubbish city that absolutely REEKS of cannabis. I’ve never been more disgusted by a city and I’ve been to Bradford! Eugh I can’t believe people raise children there.

No, that's Le Labo Santal 33 you're smelling. God, it's everywhere and has been for years.

Vivi0 · 17/01/2026 10:34

And? That’s a quite small number out of the number of spectators.

It’s not even true.

17,000 people are not trying to cancel or resell their World Cup tickets.

These are people that don’t have tickets yet.

To be in with a chance to even purchase tickets to the World Cup, you need to submit an application to be entered into a draw.

500 million people have applied.

17,000 of those people have since withdrawn their applications ahead of the draw for the next round of ticket sales. 17,000 out of 500,000,000!

As someone else, said more likely due to the prices too!

What are the 'blatant lies' please explain? What am I lying about? You won't as it is you who doesn't have a clue which is understandable in your little insulated bubble.

You can’t help being worried, that’s what a lot of parents are like (me too)stay in groups, watch your drinks, have some spare cash in a pocket etc etc just the same as when she’s in a city here. I’m sure she will have a fabulous time. I went a good twenty years ago and have so many fond memories. But do get her to take her warmest clothes! We were not prepared and had to buy hat, scarf, gloves and wore all our clothes at the same time 🤪🥶.

This just shows how susceptible people are to media manipulation and fear mongering. Which, incidentally, is actually pretty terrifying.

Your DD will be fine OP. probably the biggest risk is her looking the wrong way when crossing the road

Defamation? Calm doon, Donald 😂

I am Scottish, certainly not patriotic to America, lol.

I’m not really a fan of Donald either, but I’m just not prepared to lie to try to cause fear and alarm in people.

America is, as it has always has been, completely safe for people to travel to.

Deal with it, I guess.

TBF that is quite funny!

Well with the 17000 that was a misunderstanding about how tickets operate. However, I think it is clutching at straws if we don't think the hostility is anything to do with it. I went around the U.S. for two months as a young child, I have been to the U.S. Another two times in my life, all very enjoyable, especially the tour as a kid so I think it is ashame not anti- America.

Vivi0 · 17/01/2026 13:01

Goldenbear · 17/01/2026 12:28

'Blatant lies' that's defamation. Why are you so patriotic to a country that you are not from, so you are British? The world is aghast!

What are the 'blatant lies' please explain? What am I lying about? You won't as it is you who doesn't have a clue which is understandable in your little insulated bubble.

You said that 17,000 people had asked for a refund for their World Cup tickets in response to someone saying there was nothing to worry about in travelling to America, thus, implying that they had done so, because they had something to worry about.

Blatant lies as 17,000 people have not requested a refund for World Cup tickets.

Instead, 17,000 out of 500,000,000 people have withdrawn their applications ahead of the draw for the next round of ticket sales. Which will be for a entire range of reasons, most probably, financial.

You are desperately trying to stir up fear and panic in people.

YellowPixie · 17/01/2026 12:41

Goldenbear · 16/01/2026 23:25

Nearly 17000 have asked for a refund..

Probably because they've seen the cost of the match tickets.

Ik what you want but since mnhq make the decisions you’ll find it more successful to run along as you put it as it’s their site. You won’t be able to control who posts what on a public forum.

Didn't say I could, I said it was ashame that they didn't. They are my feelings, my opinion on the subject and I will state it as much as I like.

EasternStandard · 17/01/2026 12:35

Goldenbear · 17/01/2026 12:30

No, that's why I'm stating, they can run along and do that and indulge in their hatred!

It's not unreasonable. The president is talking up the dangers of the country, telling the world it's full of domestic terrorists and drug users. He is making it clear that foreigners are not welcome and that he doesn't think laws, international or domestic, apply to him.

Minneapolis, of all places seems to be about to be put under a form of martial law.

However, he is clearly not to be trusted or particularly believed.

Im sure she'll be fine, and have a wonderful time.

We’ve seen domestic terrorist attacks here, and have in previous years. We also have a drug problem ourselves. 🤷‍♀️

ChikinLikin · 17/01/2026 11:03

You are being completely unreasonable, but you know that. I sympathise because I also worry about my adult kids.
You do need to do exactly what the police and other government officials tell you to do in the US. They do not tolerate lippiness, jokes and banter. But she knows that.
