Can I wear this Satin Dress to a Wedding. Husband says no. I feel stunning in it, and think it is ok to wear.

Opinion needed. I got gifted this dress for Christmas it's a bit tight as it is my pre baby size, but it somehow makes me look smaller than I am.

It is cinched on my waist and then flows into a fitted skirt. I feel confident in it. I feel like me again. I have been desperate to wear it since I got it but we never go out.

It's my husband's best friend's wedding in February. He is one of the best men. I am not in the wedding so I wont be in any of the pictures or anything like that.

Husband isn't happy about me wearing it. Is it reasonable to wear it? I never go out and I think we will be having another baby by the end of the year so I wont get another chance to wear this beautiful dress. I also dont want to go out and buy another dress when I have been gifted this one and it is sitting in my wardrobe.

It is white at the bottom but clearly with the black lace top it is not a wedding dress. Be honest please.

ADEL

Classic. Commanding. Effortless. The ADEL Lace and Satin Halter Gown is an ode to contrast. Delicate lace meets liquid satin in a silhouette that celebrates form. A plunging halter neckline frames the décolletage, its stretchy lace bodice tied effortle...

You will have to put something over your shoulders to arrive and are going to look like the bride with a coat/shrug/cape over a wedding dress. If it were in a very warm country in summer maybe it wouldn't be such an issue but you can't arrive at a wedding just like that, even if you have a private driver.

TheJoyousHiker · 16/01/2026 14:17

The dress isn’t suitable tor a wedding. I have been to all sorts of weddings over the years and never once, no matter how glamorous the wedding have I ever seen anyone in a backless dress. The white skirt wouldn’t bother me though I am never a fan of a black/white colour combination in a dress.

I’m baffled why your MIL bought the dress for you in a size too small and in a style that’s not easy to wear. You say it’s too tight but yet are going to wear it. But you want to wear the dress, so wear it, you’re not really bothered by posters saying it’s not suitable.

No- too revealing and too white

(If you're going to reveal it's only a glitzy evening affair in a city centre cocktail bar I think it would be more suitable, but for a standard wedding - no)

If you do go ahead and wear that, you will likely have red wine spilled on you.

What a weird gift from your MIL.

Mine gave me a nice book about gardening. I'd have been gobsmacked to open a wedding dress 😂

The bride is extremely glamorous. She wore a long cut out dress to my wedding, it was light yellow. It is not a church wedding either. Many of the guests will be wearing dresses like this to the wedding as she is very glamorous and works in social media so her friends are also glamorous. I have been to weddings where women have worn black and white before. Someone wore a white dress to my wedding, I did not mind. I was asking whether the white skirt is ok which was the only issue my husband had with it, clearly it is not.

If you think its the sort of dress alot of guests will be wearing maybe ask the MoH her opinion. She's closest to the bride so hopefully will have a good idea of what she'd care about or not. :)

Soashamed60 · 16/01/2026 14:05

No. As pp have said too exposing for a wedding & long white skirt is not good for a wedding either.

JLou08 · 16/01/2026 14:05

That's not suitable for a wedding. If your breasts are any bigger than the model it will be way too much exposure for a wedding. Even without it being revealing I'd say it's too much for a guest, too much white and the shape/length of the skirt is more bridal party than guest. Get your DH to arrange an evening out for you to wear it.

ParmaVioletTea · 16/01/2026 14:00

It looks a bit cheap & vulgar: trying too hard. The bodice looks a bit like the underwear you see in the window of Anne Summers.

If you want bias cut, elegant satin, look at Ghost.

Sid9nie · 16/01/2026 13:59

It's a beautiful dress but too much white . Don't wear it.

smallglassbottle · 16/01/2026 13:58

It's horrible and looks like a nightie 😂

Bluebunnylover · 16/01/2026 13:57

No it’s white and revealing. The day is about the bride!

exse24Londoner · 16/01/2026 13:56

I want to say yes but would check with a mutual friend - or even the bride herself if you are friends. Someone who actually knows what the bride would think rather than an opinionated random like me

Its February so you'll need a layer over the top (non-white jacket or woolly jumper) which will resolve the too much skin on show issue

Sunloungerhogger · 16/01/2026 13:38

Afraid not OP - it is a beautiful dress and brilliant that you feel brilliant in it, but not appropriate for a wedding - too much on show, too much white (and to be honest black is somewhat frowned upon too for wedding guests). Even if the dress code is evening wear (most UK weddings the dress code is traditionally day wear - albeit fully appreciate that’s entirely the bride and groom’s choice!) I still think the amount of white and the sexiness of it mean it would be a bit too attention grabbing. Whatever style of wedding / dress code, I don’t think it’s polite to wear something that could potentially upstage the bride somehow even if entirely unintentional.

@MegsyLondon not rtft but have seen your posts.

If the white skirt is causing the issue with DH, could you dye / paint it to give it more colour? You could do it easily with fabric paints (even food colouring!) to make a kind of watercolour ombré effect, and then add a throw in one of the colours if you wanted to cover up on top for any part of the event.

I’d practice on a tea towel first and then go for it, assuming your MIL won’t mind?

Yes, that would look stunning!

ERthree · 16/01/2026 13:13

You know it isn't suitable for a wedding so don't try and justify it.

Vinvertebrate · 16/01/2026 13:10

My arse would look like a lunar eclipse in that (very white, very fitted) dress. I think it would only work on a gamine teenager, and even then, absolutely not at a wedding.

I did see a guest wear a similar dress to a wedding once. She was a friend of the groom, we all knew she hated the bride and she successfully (and vindictively) fucked up all the photos - formal and otherwise - as “Bride 2” while grinning like a Cheshire Cat. Unless you’re also that much of a mean girl, don’t do it.

I wonder how many extra clicks that website had had since this thread was started. Great marketing trick.

My thoughts exactly . The wording of the post is odd like maybe Ai.

if a man turned up at a wedding wearing a skimpy T-shirt and tiny shorts I think there would be criticism.

A man turned up at my friend's wedding wearing light washed loose jeans and believe me, there were looks and mutters! 😂

So the bride is your best friend, she's very glamorous in general and she's the only person whose opinion actually matters, so wild idea, ask her! If she really is your best friend, she'll be comfortable enough to be honest in her response, problem solved!

Indeed, I thought it was a quite poorly disguised bit of advertising, but it's managed to stretch to five pages!

Buggeroffyouarse · 16/01/2026 12:54

I don't think it should be worn to the wedding.
Fashion is subjective and whilst I really dislike it I get that it make you feel great so that's good too. I would get your husband to take you somewhere so that you can wear it.
