Can I wear this Satin Dress to a Wedding. Husband says no. I feel stunning in it, and think it is ok to wear.

Opinion needed. I got gifted this dress for Christmas it's a bit tight as it is my pre baby size, but it somehow makes me look smaller than I am.

It is cinched on my waist and then flows into a fitted skirt. I feel confident in it. I feel like me again. I have been desperate to wear it since I got it but we never go out.

It's my husband's best friend's wedding in February. He is one of the best men. I am not in the wedding so I wont be in any of the pictures or anything like that.

Husband isn't happy about me wearing it. Is it reasonable to wear it? I never go out and I think we will be having another baby by the end of the year so I wont get another chance to wear this beautiful dress. I also dont want to go out and buy another dress when I have been gifted this one and it is sitting in my wardrobe.

It is white at the bottom but clearly with the black lace top it is not a wedding dress. Be honest please.

ADEL

Classic. Commanding. Effortless. The ADEL Lace and Satin Halter Gown is an ode to contrast. Delicate lace meets liquid satin in a silhouette that celebrates form. A plunging halter neckline frames the décolletage, its stretchy lace bodice tied effortle...

I don’t see the issue - I like it.

Edit: it was gifted at Christmas. I was told it was to make me feel good which it does. It's perfect for my body shape. I feel confident in it which I havent for a while.

Edit: my husband loves the dress on me, just thinks the white skirt is not allowed for weddings.

Not very often this gets said on Mumsnet. But your husband is right.

you don’t wear white/cream to a wedding. Especially in a style that might be a wedding dress (even if you do have a black top).

Motherofsons721 · 16/01/2026 19:53

I’m going to throw a spanner in the works and say YES!!

It’s a beautiful dress and, more importantly, makes you feel beautiful.
Yes, white at a wedding on anyone other than the bride is traditionally a no-no, but you have stated this not out of the norm for previous weddings you have attended.
I know I have certainly been to plenty weddings and at-least one person, at each wedding, has had a partially white dress. I have never heard any one comment or a bride complain that their day was ruined or it wasn’t okay.
It will be February, I’m sure you will probably drape something over your shoulders for some warmth, as long as that’s not white then wear the damn dress, be confident and have a marvellous night OP!

The bride is extremely glamorous. She wore a long cut out dress to my wedding, it was light yellow. It is not a church wedding either. Many of the guests will be wearing dresses like this to the wedding as she is very glamorous and works in social media so her friends are also glamorous. I have been to weddings where women have worn black and white before. Someone wore a white dress to my wedding, I did not mind. I was asking whether the white skirt is ok which was the only issue my husband had with it, clearly it is not.

It's such a shame about the white skirt, it sounds like it will be very glamorous and this dress, apart from the white would have been perfect.

Tink3rbell30 · 16/01/2026 19:40

No there's too much white and too much boob.

5128gap · 16/01/2026 19:34

I wouldn't. For a start there's a lot of white which people often think is a no for a wedding. Secondly the top is not suitable as day wear. Thirdly, it doesn't fit you, and the absolute last thing you want with a dress with a top like that is for it to look too tight.
Its a beautiful dress, but unless you're OK with attracting a lot of attention (not all of which will be positive) id give it a swerve for the wedding and arrange another occasion (evening) to do it justice.

Something like this would be much more appropriate for a February wedding, imo.

It used to be common for women to get changed between wedding ceremony and evening reception. I remember my Mum doing this. Could you wear something else in the afternoon and change for the evening. Too much white for the ceremony but it’ll likely be darker in the evening and less noticeable. Gives you a chance to wear it this year.

OrangeisthenewBrown · 16/01/2026 19:27

Oh dear! It's a definite "no" from me, I'm afraid. To me, it looks too much like underwear - and far too revealing for a wedding guest.

Theslummymummy · 16/01/2026 19:23

It's stunning and fine for a wedding. Not sure what all the nos are about 🙄 what's his reason?

walkingaroundsostrenegrene · 16/01/2026 19:20

A hideous dress in my opinion and definitely not suitable for a wedding guest.

Northernladdette · 16/01/2026 19:19

No, it will look like you’re trying to outshine the bride 😣

Kittyloulou · 16/01/2026 19:18

Personally I think it’s awful. Makes the stomach look like it’s carrying twins. Nothing wrong with that but if you’re not pregnant then it’s an issue.

BuildbyNumbere · 16/01/2026 19:14

No, white at the bottom like a wedding dress and far to revealing

He’s right I’m afraid! White satin is even worse than white in general. Plan a special night out to wear it. Bet it’s fabulous on you

CeeCee702 · 16/01/2026 19:11

Tell hubby you’ll wear something else if he plans a lovely date night for you to wear it. Win win!

itsallrosy · 16/01/2026 19:06

With the white skirt, my initial reaction is to say no, but why don’t you just ask the bride, OP? I think that’s the most respectful thing you can do, and then you either get to wear it and feel comfortable, or wear something else and avoid feeling awkward or self conscious.

TiredMummma · 16/01/2026 19:02

So your description sounded completely different 100% no and you absolutely cannot wear white!!

Littlegreenbauble · 16/01/2026 18:56

I mean... If you're super hot and the bride is super hotter and you wore something else over the top until the party then maybe... It's a bit wedding dressy tho

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 16/01/2026 18:54

Screams attention seeking. It's the bride's day, you've had your wedding.

EnormousGinplease · 16/01/2026 18:49

No .. it's a beautiful dress but definitely not suitable for a wedding. Find somewhere posh and formal to wear it instead.

Sophue · 16/01/2026 18:46

It's awful!

BareNecessitiesofLife · 16/01/2026 18:46

This is the kind of dress that will be talked about in years to come by the bride and her friends: ‘ do you remember that woman who turned up half naked yet also managed to be wearing half a wedding dress at the same time.’

Emmz1510 · 16/01/2026 18:40

No it’s not suitable for a wedding. I’m also not sure I like it. I don’t think it would be flattering around the waist for anyone with any bulk in that area. But lucky you if you look great in it! Not for a wedding though x

Mine gave me a nice book about gardening. I'd have been gobsmacked to open a wedding dress 😂

Edited

"Did you forget we already got married, Betty? Or are you just trying?"

I would have enjoyed a nice gardening book.
