Can I wear this Satin Dress to a Wedding. Husband says no. I feel stunning in it, and think it is ok to wear.

Opinion needed. I got gifted this dress for Christmas it's a bit tight as it is my pre baby size, but it somehow makes me look smaller than I am.

It is cinched on my waist and then flows into a fitted skirt. I feel confident in it. I feel like me again. I have been desperate to wear it since I got it but we never go out.

It's my husband's best friend's wedding in February. He is one of the best men. I am not in the wedding so I wont be in any of the pictures or anything like that.

Husband isn't happy about me wearing it. Is it reasonable to wear it? I never go out and I think we will be having another baby by the end of the year so I wont get another chance to wear this beautiful dress. I also dont want to go out and buy another dress when I have been gifted this one and it is sitting in my wardrobe.

It is white at the bottom but clearly with the black lace top it is not a wedding dress. Be honest please.

ADEL

Classic. Commanding. Effortless. The ADEL Lace and Satin Halter Gown is an ode to contrast. Delicate lace meets liquid satin in a silhouette that celebrates form. A plunging halter neckline frames the décolletage, its stretchy lace bodice tied effortle...

The wedding is in February so OP is likely to be wearing extra layers for much of the day anyway.

While the lower half is white, the top half is black which stops it from looking bridal.

I think it's fine if it's accesorised with bold, non-bridal accessories.

@BogRollBOGOF

But the bottom half still looks like a wedding dress!

By layering with a cardigan or blazer you only solve half the issues.
Also she might want to take the cardigan /blazer off in the evening - showing too much flesh.

@MegsyLondon it is a lovely dress just not for a wedding. Make sure you go out to a posh restaurant or something like that so it can be worn.
FYI a guest at my wedding years ago wore quite a revealing dress - there were quite a few 'comments' about it.
Your DH is the best man and he has reservations about it, and lots of strangers agree with him, I think you need to wear something else

Neveranynamesleft · 16/01/2026 06:55

Lovely dress but definitely not for a wedding. You will stand out for all the wrong reasons. Do not be that person .

DeftGoldHedgehog · 16/01/2026 06:55

Kindly, your MIL was probably relieved to pass the dress on as it's so difficult to wear. I have a work do where floor length dresses are the norm, but couldn't even wear it for that as it's too bridal.

Exactly this. OP don’t buy another dress because people are telling you it’s bad to wear an all- white dress, which this one isn’t.
To be sure why not send your dress pic to the bride and ask her, presumably you’re all friends you care about each other and she will tell you. Dark or bright (not white) coat and you’ll be fine. Some kind of stole (?) to wear around the reception because it’s Feb. Have fun!

BlueEyedBogWitch · 16/01/2026 06:54

Bloody hell, no.

You’ll go down in the couple’s family folklore as ‘That woman who came to your wedding with her tits out’.

AlwaysTheRenegade · 16/01/2026 06:54

Is it a church wedding or black tie, or more casual?

Jellybunny56 · 16/01/2026 06:54

No definitely do not wear this to a wedding, it is beautiful but not to attend someone else’s wedding in

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/01/2026 06:54

It’s a beautiful dress but absolutely not for a wedding. Too much white and too much skin on show. I know this isn’t what you want to hear and I hope you find something you feel equally lovely in. Also, perhaps see if you can organise a posh night out with your husband so you can wear it, particularly before the next baby comes along.

Celestialmoods · 16/01/2026 06:53

You can’t wear that to a
wedding. You need to
find another occasion to wear it.

Theonlywayicanloveyou · 16/01/2026 06:53

You can’t wear it to the wedding but ask your DH to take you on a cocktail date so you can wear it

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 16/01/2026 06:52

Its not suitable.

i get its annoying not to have anywhere to wear a nice dress (I personally think its a weird hard to wear dress as the colours limit it to black tie/the opera) but really candidly....

Anyone who has given birth and feels good and confident in THAT deeply unforgiving dress is going to have zero problems finding something else that looks nice enough.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 16/01/2026 06:52

I'm very relaxed about these things, snd people wearing black and white, but it looks like a wedding dress. Why did someone buy this for you? It's an odd choice, it's lovely but difficult to wear.

Whaleandsnail6 · 16/01/2026 06:52

I don't think its wedding guest suitable.

I'd have a look on vinted and choose something else . Save that dress for another occasion

cloudtreecarpet · 16/01/2026 06:51

Also firmly in the "no" camp.
Surprised some people are saying yes though.
I haven't been to a wedding in a while but do women (who aren't a bride or bridesmaid) wear floor length evening dresses to weddings now?

Cherrysoup · 16/01/2026 06:51

I’d be paranoid all day about getting something on the skirt. It is, as pp said, very ‘Oscars’. Totally backless, too.

I’ve been looking for a wedding guest outfit, I’ve got a couple of floral dresses. It is a dilemma to find the balance of not too showy.

HPFA · 16/01/2026 06:43

Someone wore a top like that at my brother's wedding - on a freezing January day in an unheated church.

How she didn't collapse from hypothermia I don't know.

Don't wear it.

I'm not even remotely religious, but a backless plunging dress in a church is so inappropriate whatever the weather. I'm genuinely a bit shocked, and I'm not a pearl-clutching busybody honestly - it's just not suitable for a place of worship?? Also yes, in January that must have been excruciatingly miserable for her. However amazing a person feels wearing a particular outfit, if the experience is that miserable then it can't be worth it just for some glam photos on social media surely?

Tallpoplartree · 16/01/2026 06:49

Sorry OP, It is a beautiful dress but I think it is too ‘bridal party’ to wear for a wedding.

beAsensible1 · 16/01/2026 06:49

Depends on the type of wedding, I don’t think it’s too fleshy, but the white is too white.

MegsyLondon · 16/01/2026 06:49

EDIT: I dont know why it matters who gave it to me but my MIL gave it to me. She gets me a dress every year for Christmas usually from really beautiful independent brands that I could never afford for myself. Last year was tough for me having a baby I lost my confidence, so she said it was to make me feel good. It does make me feel like me again, which I havent in so long.

EDIT: We did go out pre-baby. But we have a little one now and I had some issues with the baby that I feel too scared to leave her alone with anyone else yet. So the wedding is the only time I see us leaving the baby briefly this year (it's a no kids wedding and he is the best man so we have to go to this one).

@Citrusbergamia hedgehog noses made me laugh. Sorry op going to agree with the majority, too booby and white for a wedding.

Maybeitllneverhappen · 16/01/2026 06:49

NO.

HighStreetOtter · 16/01/2026 06:48

No. It’s an evening wear dress not a wedding guest dress. It’s not even the colour though that doesn’t help. It’s the design and material. Agree it’s too attention grabbing.

Theonlywayicanloveyou · 16/01/2026 06:48

No you really can’t

WimpoleHat · 16/01/2026 06:47

Agree with others - it’s a glamorous cocktail party dress and will look very out of place at a wedding. And the colours are wrong for a wedding as well, which will make it doubly stand out (and not in a good way). Great dress for another occasion, but not for this one, I’m afraid…..
