Can I wear this Satin Dress to a Wedding. Husband says no. I feel stunning in it, and think it is ok to wear.

Opinion needed. I got gifted this dress for Christmas it's a bit tight as it is my pre baby size, but it somehow makes me look smaller than I am.

It is cinched on my waist and then flows into a fitted skirt. I feel confident in it. I feel like me again. I have been desperate to wear it since I got it but we never go out.

It's my husband's best friend's wedding in February. He is one of the best men. I am not in the wedding so I wont be in any of the pictures or anything like that.

Husband isn't happy about me wearing it. Is it reasonable to wear it? I never go out and I think we will be having another baby by the end of the year so I wont get another chance to wear this beautiful dress. I also dont want to go out and buy another dress when I have been gifted this one and it is sitting in my wardrobe.

It is white at the bottom but clearly with the black lace top it is not a wedding dress. Be honest please.

ADEL

Classic. Commanding. Effortless. The ADEL Lace and Satin Halter Gown is an ode to contrast. Delicate lace meets liquid satin in a silhouette that celebrates form. A plunging halter neckline frames the décolletage, its stretchy lace bodice tied effortle...

Wow I have no idea where other people go for date nights but I have literally never gone or could afford to go anywhere that requires a satin floor-length dress. A white tie ball? Are you all serious, you’d wear it on a date night?’

A dressy wedding would be the only place I could wear it and buying another dress because of a white skirt seems a bit insane. The only person whose opinion matters here is the bride’s. OP should just ask her.

Wear with a jacket for the day and then you can take the jacket off for the evening reception.

Anewuser · 16/01/2026 07:04

I’m impressed your husband has such high standards.

Beautiful dress and lovely that you feel great in it but totally unsuitable for a wedding.

I understand you don’t want to leave your baby yet, but you are prepared to do that for the wedding, so there’s no reason why you couldn’t leave the baby for a couple of hours while you and your husband go out somewhere you can wear the dress.

fluffiphlox · 16/01/2026 07:04

No, especially given that your husband is best man. Very attention-seeking. (Though I’m sure it would be lovely for the right occasion).
Anyway you’d freeze.

StephensLass1977 · 16/01/2026 07:04

If you wear this, just be prepared for everyone to be gossiping about you! This is nowhere near wedding guest attire. I'm surprised you can't see that.

myrtleWilson · 16/01/2026 07:03

Some weddings do seem to have morphed into glam/cocktail party attire but if the one you’re attending hasn’t, you’ll look very inappropriately dressed.

also for some reason it looks to me like a dress that would be worn by an actress appearing in a live action remake of Cluedo - the shape of it looks like the little Cluedo pieces!

nondrinker1985 · 16/01/2026 07:02

It’s a No OP and a massive one too! The design and also the white.

nomoremsniceperson · 16/01/2026 07:01

It's a lovely dress but too much for a day when another woman is supposed to be the centre of attention unfortunately.
Why don't you see if you can book some sort of glamorous event with your DH that you can wear it to? I'm not sure what that might be but there must be something.

fruitypancake · 16/01/2026 07:01

Could try it with a black jacket ?

FirstdatesFred · 16/01/2026 07:01

No. Pick yourselves up a short last minute cruise and wear it to a cruise formal night 😁

JustMyView13 · 16/01/2026 06:59

No. Come on, you know that not wearing white to a wedding (as a guest) is rule number 1. Don’t be that person.

And this just white. It’s white satin and very showy.

and also you will freeze in February

BengalBangle · 16/01/2026 07:00

Absolutely not. Way too 'look at me' forcing a wedding. Totally inappropriate.

SardinesOnButteredToast · 16/01/2026 07:00

It would be excellent for a glamorous Bond girl wearing in a fancy restaurant in Monaco. It's a beautiful dress. For a wedding, it feels a little bit 'look at me', which I always think is a rudeness to the bride. I think our job as guests is to try to blend in, look as if we made the effort suitable to the occasion, but be a pleasant backdrop to the gorgeous woman on the day.

ZappyDays · 16/01/2026 07:00

Not for a wedding in my opinion and if you’re not going to get a chance to wear it then I’m sorry but it’s a strange gift to receive. I have visions of you having to just wear it around the house like Monica from friends wearing Emily’s wedding dress and doing the washing up!

Is your baby a reliable sleeper in the evenings? Maybe put the baby down to sleep, crack the dress out, get your husband to dress up and have a date night in with fancy food and wine?

CrispySquid · 16/01/2026 06:59

No it’s not appropriate for about a thousand different obvious reasons

JustMyView13 · 16/01/2026 06:59

Lovely dress but too much white.

EDIT: I dont know why it matters who gave it to me but my MIL gave it to me. She gets me a dress every year for Christmas usually from really beautiful independent brands that I could never afford for myself. Last year was tough for me having a baby I lost my confidence, so she said it was to make me feel good. It does make me feel like me again, which I havent in so long.

EDIT: We did go out pre-baby. But we have a little one now and I had some issues with the baby that I feel too scared to leave her alone with anyone else yet. So the wedding is the only time I see us leaving the baby briefly this year (it's a no kids wedding and he is the best man so we have to go to this one).

It's so nice that your MIL buys you lovely dresses every year. This dress seems like an odd choice in your circumstances but I can see intended with love. Do you think in a few months time, you might feel able to leave the baby with her and go for cocktails somewhere really glamourous? Maybe for your own wedding anniversary or birthday, something like that?

I guess a question to consider is, would you have been happy for a guest to wear that at your wedding? If so, will it be a similar crowd and vibe at this one?

manicpixieschemegirl · 16/01/2026 06:58

This has to be a wind up. No one in their right mind would think that dress was suitable for a wedding.

You said on another thread that your MIL bought it (weird in itself) in a size 8 but you’re now a 14 post baby. Have you exchanged for the correct size or will you miraculously have dropped all those dress sizes in 2 months? All very odd.

Mamabearandcubs · 16/01/2026 06:58

I personally think no, I think it’s unreasonable to wear white to someone’s wedding!

cloudtreecarpet · 16/01/2026 06:58

beigeybeige · 16/01/2026 06:55

Exactly this. OP don’t buy another dress because people are telling you it’s bad to wear an all- white dress, which this one isn’t.
To be sure why not send your dress pic to the bride and ask her, presumably you’re all friends you care about each other and she will tell you. Dark or bright (not white) coat and you’ll be fine. Some kind of stole (?) to wear around the reception because it’s Feb. Have fun!

I don't think the colour is the problem here, it's the satin fabric and the style that makes it look like a dress for a glamorous evening event.
Unless the wedding is a glamorous evening event of course?

SweetBaklava · 16/01/2026 06:57

Sorry your husband is right, it’s unsuitable. It’s not your day, remember that!

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 16/01/2026 06:57

I would also suggest completion of the gift that your husband arranged with his mother to babysit and take you out somewhere lovely on a date night.

Anyone who would find that dress flattering will have no problem at all finding a suitable dress to wear.

MangaKanga · 16/01/2026 06:57

Plunging neckline. How could you think that was appropriate?

Lifesd · 16/01/2026 06:57

Nice dress but wholly inappropriate for a wedding.
