To be annoyed at my seat in restaurant?

So last night me and partner went for a Indian meal for a belated birthday celebration.
Heard lots of good reviews but because there was just the two of us they put us on the two table (which was bang in the middle and people either side,no room to move etc )
I felt so uncomfortable the whole meal.
Felt like the other people watching us eating, couldn’t talk etc
I asked to move but they said “2 people is these tables “
Anyway il add a photo with arrow showing our table
abiu ? Or are these tables ridiculous
Bear in mind we have 2 curry’s ,2 cocktails ,2 rice ,a nan all on there and literally couldn’t move.

Not rocket science

The size of the table looks fairly standard to me for 2 people. They're a little bit close together, but equally, if they had only 3 tables on that run they'd be spread very far apart. Perhaps they should push the middle 2 tables together to make a 4 person table, and just have the 2 outer ones as 2 person tables, that would feel a bit more spacious.

It wouldn't be a particularly big deal for me.

Surprise surprise 🙄

DeftGoldHedgehog · 19/01/2026 12:32

Sheer greed fitting an extra table in.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 16/01/2026 21:23

I would have hated that. I’d feel really trapped and not private at all. Would you have to crawl under to go to the loo???

Foodieasfuck · 16/01/2026 19:32

I’d hate that! Dreadful!

JackGrealishsCalves · 16/01/2026 19:29

Tbh I've been to many restaurants where there are rows of tables for 2 set up like this which are very "cosy", i don't like it but accept it.
But bloody hell, I've never seen a gap between tables THAT narrow, not sure even Arianna Grande would get through there!

Yeah @inkyspells that is shit. If it was the only seats they had, then I guess they had no choice, but I wouldn't have liked it. I think I would have left. No privacy or intimacy at all...

DH and I and our 2 DC went to a nice pizza and pasta place a few months ago, and they do do good food! But they put us in such a tight space, (like a booth...) and even my 2 DC who are slim were a bit squashed and had to 'breathe in' a bit. DH and I who are are little bit chubby, were really uncomfortable. Pic 1 is an example, though the table was bigger/ended up digging into us! 😬

Last Spring, me and DH went to an evening meal out to a pub, with 10 others. They gave us a table for 10, and (when there were 12 of us,) and the extra 2 had to sit on a separate table.... It was 2-3 feet away (because of how the place is designed,) and the 'partition' was 4 feet high, so the 2 on their own couldn't see or speak to the other 10.

We ended up with 4 of us at one table, and 8 at the other, so it was like 2 parties of people, and not one. It put such a dampener on the evening. Pic 2 is a bit of an example of what I mean, the main bulk of the party was in the seating to the left of the picture, (at the back, behind the partition,) and the other 4 were stuck at the front (out of view of the other 8.)

That was the last time we went. They lost trade from about 16-17 people, because a few others who didn't go that night didn't go again either. We used to go every 2-3 weeks, at least 8-10 of us. So they lost quite a lot of custom.

Edited to say, with the second example, (where 12 of us were split up,) there WAS a table that would have fit 12-13 people, but they said it was 'reserved.' We got there at 6.15pm, and said 'well what time is it reserved for?' They said 'the party for this table will be here at 7pm.' We stayed til 8.15pm, and NO-ONE came to that table, so they could have let us have it! Hmm We would have stayed longer, but were all a bit uncomfortable and a bit pissed off. We would have spent more; had more drinks/probably desserts, so they lost that trade, adn well as future trade from 17-ish people!.

Had something similar at a friends birthday a few months back. It was a bottomless brunch place that we’d been to two years prior as a big group and been put all on the same large table which worked well. When we went back the second time they gave us 3 separate tables all a few metres from each other and right on top of the live music. Made the whole thing a nightmare because not everyone knew each other but was stuck on separate tables meaning no one really mixed through the whole thing. Painful. If they can’t accommodate everyone together in a group booking then they need to make it clear at the time of enquiry!

Same here! It was some time ago and was to celebrate finding out that I was pregnant. We were talking quietly, of course - private stuff! - but at one point the woman on the next table leaned over the six-inch gap and congratulated us, and then said that she'd smoked all the way through both her pregnancies and both her kids were fine! Okaaay!

Prime example of how ridiculously close these places have you 😂 mine was meeting up with an ex after 2 years to establish if we wanted to try again or not. No arguing, inappropriate topics, or anything to draw attention, all quiet talking and all very civil but we obviously needed to discuss what had caused the demise of the relationship initially and if we felt we could move forward. Realised very quickly the couple sat 2 inches away from us had fallen silent to listen to our conversation and so we changed the topic as it then felt too uncomfortable. Just made the whole thing really bloody awkward! I don’t want an audience when talking quietly!

TiredMummma · 16/01/2026 13:29

Yeah if not happy, I would have not sat down until they moved me or I went elsewhere. However I would have no problem with that particular table although not great for intimate conversation!

Noodles1234 · 16/01/2026 06:50

At first i thought you meant in an isle, seeing the photo that’s not on for a restaurant. They’re trying to squeeze every last space with a table to increase profits. I part understand but this would be a step too far - how do you even get in or out without other strangers having to get up?

Itsreallynotdifficult · 15/01/2026 23:04

you wouldn’t even be sat that close to someone on the same table as you on a table of 4+ basically anywhere else, and you know those people. That’s ridiculous. Should be one less table there
for sure!

latenightscrolling · 15/01/2026 19:07

ThreeMenInAVan · 15/01/2026 08:26

The food was probably full of bits of fluff from the clothes of people squeezing past it.

haha hilarious

MyMiniMetro · 15/01/2026 18:52

You’re right. That’s ridiculous.

If you can’t leave your seat without disturbing some other table the tables are too close together. Put it in a negative Google review with this picture.

In future if you don’t like table tell them early and if they can’t accommodate you -leave.

situps76 · 15/01/2026 18:22

That is rubbish seating OP! I'd be annoyed too.

Its a typical Indian style restaurant where they cram in as many seats as possible.

I had a horrible experience a few years ago. Went for dinner and we literally couldn't hear what the people at our table were saying because the nearby 'neighbours' were so close and so loud.

take10yearsofmylife · 15/01/2026 17:37

It would be helpful to others who might want to book table for two if you post a google review with pictures.

TimeForATerf · 15/01/2026 17:35

Absolutely not unreasonable. Who on earth wants to sit that close to strangers whose arse is in your plate when they leave the table. This seating arrangement is for a group of 8 friends on a single booking.

We were offered something similar at our local Italian, which had tonnes of empty tables in the room, because we were just a two. We refused to accept the table and they did move us elsewhere with a bit of a scowl.

Moonlightdust · 15/01/2026 17:12

To be honest though as a total introvert even strangers sat within 2 meters of me is enough to put me off my meal 😂

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 15/01/2026 17:11

Prob best to have looked at reviews and images of the restaurant before you booked. If you would stay whatever due to deposit.

PhilOPastry62 · 15/01/2026 17:09

They're way too close. What happens if you're sitting on the bench part on one of the middle tables and you need to get up to go to the loo (or for any other reason)? Does your partner have to stand up and you move the table back? Because you're not getting out through the non-existent aisle. Those should be two tables of four, with a decent space between them.

It was £100 for two people - nowadays that is fairly cheap.

You’re right, she definitely shouldn’t have expected to be able to go to the toilet without the whole row getting out like she’s on a Ryanair flight.

Interestingly though, my reply was more in response to somebody inferring the OP was being cheap and what should she expect. I guess there’s more than one of those posters 😊

firstofallimadelight · 15/01/2026 17:07

There’s no room to leave the table without making everyone else move, that’s ridiculous and at an Indian where you order lots of dishes the table is far too small

Starlightsprite · 15/01/2026 16:59

I wouldn’t like it. They’re far too close together. You’re basically sat with the people on the tables next to you. I’ve seen a lot of restaurants like this and that’s why I try and check photos out on reviews before I visit. Some people are fine with it obviously or they would have had to change the configuration.
