Just been abused on the school run.. parking!

My three children attend two separate schools on the same road. I always make sure I park somewhere that isn’t blocking someone’s drive etc. DH parked in the usual spot today and I waited in the car today (I have a disability and get flare ups in the colder weather). She pulled up to the window effing and blinding then she got out the car and started recording me swearing in front of all the school kids. DH returned back and she started to recording DH and the kids. It was her dad’s property and she had accused us of blocking him in. We left more than enough space for him to get out I even offered to move the car.

I have attached a pic (the silver car wasn’t in front so if her dad needed to get out he had more than enough space. We parked on the white mark and there are other parents parked behind us.

I am trying to move my kids to a nearer school so I can walk and finally put the parking drama to bed. However currently going through the appeals process as the local school has stated that they have no space.

Were we unreasonable? I’m at the stage where I don’t even want to take them to school now because of lack of parking and the dirty stares and arguments being caused by this. I can appreciate it’s frustrating living near a school!

This is clearer as I said if anything my car might have hung over the tiniest bit. To me it seems a bit of an over reaction.

You are over the angled bit of the dropped kerb. It is not allowed. It is not for you to judge if someone can get out.

Walkden · 14/01/2026 18:57

"They should apply for white line outside their property if it’s a recurring issue as I imagine it drives them mad"

Why? Plenty of posters on this thread gave indicated it's unenforceable and they'd ignore it anyway.

I don't think a dropped kerb should come into it.As long as there is enough space for someone to get their car off their drive, there should be no problem.

School parking is a nightmare and people like that just cause unnecessary additional stressed to us frazzled parents

Maybe these parents should plan their day better rather than cause unnecessary additional stress to frazzled home owners?

Devuelta81 · 14/01/2026 18:57

We have a nightmare parking situation at our school and I have had abuse yelled at me by a resident recently too, when I was parked completely fine - she had to wait to pass someone because it's a narrow road and cars park on both sides but that's the case all the way down. I think unfortunately what happens in this situation is that people take out their frustration at the general problem on individuals when it's not really warranted in that particular case. In fact at one point she yelled "we live here you know!)

I don't have all that much sympathy for the residents myself, as much as it must be very frustrating and is for the parents too, anyone living there chose to move to a very narrow road with a large primary school that has been there since about 1950, and parking issues that would be blindingly obvious when viewing. And they've got nicer houses for the price as a result. What she didn't know when she was screaming her head off at me was that I'd just found out my parent had terminal cancer, so that was great timing. And that was the only reason we'd driven (we usually walk) as I had to get over there quickly!

I now do literally anything to avoid having to drive there as it's so stressful, it's such a problem at so many schools. So I don't think you did anything wrong at all, but is there a way you could find to limit the stress, ie park further away even if it's then a 10 min walk or so? It is a horrible way to start the day, I sympathise.

She was OTT, should have asked politely but you were in the wrong.

Better to get the bus, walk or cycle if you can't park safely.

If only it was that easy eh?!

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 14/01/2026 18:53

It looks like the dropped curb ends at the back of the white line - so further into the hedge section. If you parked that end of the white line then I think you’re fine. The front of the white line and you’re on dodgy ground. But as long as that silver car isn't there (who is definitely too close) or similar (I know it’s a google photo). There should be enough room to get out as the driver will have the drive, plus the width of the gate and a bit further.

what isn’t clear is what is opposite. If it’s parked cars and tight then it would be good to leave even more space.

the abuse is not ok though regardless. They should apply for white line outside their property if it’s a recurring issue as I imagine it drives them mad.

That’s a gate? Surely no car is coming out there

In my very humble opinion if you don’t want parking dramas twice a day then you really shouldn’t buy a house near a school (or a hospital). It never fails to amaze me that people buy these houses and then get all up in their arse about parking when it’s clear to anyone with half an ounce of common sense what’s going to happen.

Theres a road very near my work (hospital) where the residents have taken to damaging (with a key) the cars parked there of staff from the hospital. It has no restrictions for parking!

Or maybe people should just park legally and not be dicks for the sake of saving a few minutes of walking time.

Doesn't follow. In the case of the people I was referring to the houses and residents pre-dated school traffic.
Tiny cottage school built later most people walked. Over years, more population, more building to the school, much bigger school, more and more pupils, more and more cars. The parking has increased exponentially. Majority of house owners are older and been in their homes from when there was virtually no traffic and have drama that came to them in a previously quiet area not the other way round.

You are blocking the driveway.

How would someone get out if someone else had parked exactly the same as you?

How could they safely get in and out Without risking kocking over pedestrians.

Flip the question for a moment... if someone wanted to park on that driveway and pretended your car wasn't there, could they park without hitting you?

What's on the other side? Are they having to navigate off the drive, turn into oncoming traffic or near a corner?

Terrible parking on you part. Shameful.

Not excusing the abuse but take responsibility for being a responsible driver. Its unsafe.

Learn to read. That’s not her car.

HurdyGurdy19 · 14/01/2026 17:49

I was told this by a highways officer that I used to work with. (I don't know if he was winding me up, of course)

A householders driveway "ends" at the outer curve of the edge stone. I'll attach a picture, hopefully showing what I mean. If your car's front/back is over this line, then you are not blocking a driveway, but you are classed as obstructing it.

Quite what anyone could do about it, I don't know. But as someone who has to put up with diabolical parental parking on a daily basis, I can understand the frustration of the person who approached you.

I don't condone her behaviour. But I can understand it.

What if there’s no curve - like in the OP?

How would someone in a wheelchair get past your car on that pavement?

Surely that's an issue for the people who own the bush, they are blocking the pavement

Walkerzoo · 14/01/2026 18:46

But you had 2 people in car. So park and walk.
Sorry but you were in the wrong. They shouldn't have shouted but it is so annoyingiving beside a school and they were fed up.

Teainthekitchen · 14/01/2026 18:46

Your slightly blocking their drive. Yes there's enough room to get out but it's a bit of a pain. I've lived somewhere before that's prone to having the driveway blocked. Im sure everyone parking is thinking "but I'll be here two seconds" but they don't realise that it happens so frequently from multiple people that you end up being inconvenienced a lot.

Don't think you deserved to be sworn at or recorded though.

GreenRedFlowers · 14/01/2026 18:45

Abuse is never ok but if you live near a school selfish people blocking your drive way is a constant pain and it can become really stressful.

You are too close to the entrance once you are overlapping- people forget this - as coming in and out needs both a turn and visibility. It's dangerous to be overlapping or butt up against it.

I could tell you some horror stories about people being unable to get to hospital in an emergency (driving to someone unexpectedly dying or help their adult child to look after grandchildren in an crisis) because a car has been left over a drive entrance by a school. Elderly people are more likely to need regular access and emergency access.

Probably she deals with this all the time and you caught her in a bad moment and she lost it.

Please don't think 'oh it's only two minutes while I leave the car' or park too close/overlapping because it's dangerous and unfair. Your kids will only be at that school for a few years. Some of these people live in their homes for decades.

I wasn’t parked over the dropped kerb I said if anything we might have just been the teeniest bit over if I reversed 2cm she still wouldn’t have been happy. There is more than enough space for her dad to get out I wasn’t blocking anything.

Well of course, how would you moving 2cm be helpful?
a
as has been asked, why don’t you drop dh and dc and then drive off and circle back so you’re not blocking people and being a hazard?

Whitesidetable · 14/01/2026 18:44

Notthedreadedschoolrunagain · 14/01/2026 18:37

Not entitled I’m just not going to be verbally abused and recorded for the sake of a cm or two. I wouldn’t block someone access getting in out of there property.

But that cm or two means you did block their access?

Whitesidetable · 14/01/2026 18:43

Notthedreadedschoolrunagain · 14/01/2026 18:37

its a normal sized pavement?

Were you up on the kerb at all?

itsthetea · 14/01/2026 18:40

Zooming in - That photo shows you parked across the dropped curb making you in the wrong ( as is also the silver car )

its illlegal to park over the dropped curb section because otherwise it does make exit and entry very difficult

I suppose if it’s happening often she is getting very pissed off

i suggest you refresh your understanding of the Highway Code

dadtoateen · 14/01/2026 18:40

Pic is from google maps and has no relevance here.
for all we know, your car could have been over the dropped kerb 🤷‍♂️

no need for the verbal though but it is bloody annoying when some people park inconsiderate at schools just so there darling child doesn’t have to walk far..

By a massive bush, and were you parked completely on the road or partly in the pavement?
