To think that most women have pierced ears?

In my teenage years (70/80s) my father refused to let me have my ears pierced. He was a very judgemental unpleasant man and it was deemed “common”.

I never did end up getting mine done even after I left home because I went into nursing and the client group I worked with (people with extreme challenging behaviour) made wearing earrings inadvisable.

It seems to me that pretty much every woman has pierced ears now and many girls have them done at quite young ages.

Is there anybody left like me who doesn’t have pierced ears?

I don’t. But mainly because I tried and my body rejected it and tried to make a big scar. I still sometimes get keloid scars today. Tried once, never again and now in my 50s and definitely won’t bother!

Inthefuturenow · 14/01/2026 10:27

I don't, anymore anyway.
My friends mum pierced them when I was 10 with a needle and ice!
I never got on with earrings though, they always annoyed me, as does most jewellery, so I I haven't worn them in 20 odd years and they've closed up now.

FractiousPangolin · 14/01/2026 10:27

I longed for pierced ears all through my childhood and finally got them done when I was 14, because only y10 and above were allowed to wear earrings at school. Stopped wearing them when I was a student, but two decades later they still haven't closed up! I don't wear earrings and probably never will again as I prefer the way my face looks without attention drawn to my earlobes, but I still have these two stupid little holes that won't go away.

BearPear · 14/01/2026 10:25

I had mine done at age 13, they never fully healed and after about a year I took them out and they closed up. I considered getting them done again when I turned 50 but didn’t, now I’m wondering about getting them done for my 60th!
my mum had hers done a couple of years after me and hers never healed either (she went somewhere fancier than me!), she let hers close up too. My daughter has enough piercings for us both and my son recently got his nose done!

merrymonsters · 14/01/2026 10:25

I never have. I'm 58. My teenage daughter doesn't either.

FinallyHere · 14/01/2026 10:24

My mother didn’t, neither did my sister or I, her daughter and five grandchildren.

if I had ever been interested in having mine pierced, I would have been put off by seeing the trouble other girls at school went through from infections and the hole closing up and needing to ‘stab a needle through’

yeah, I guess I’m too squeamish

Marlaysydney12 · 14/01/2026 10:23

I never got mine done (40s). Always seemed like extra hassle I don't need, especially when doing team sports. I have curly hair so it's quite busy around my face anyway.

Whosthetabbynow · 14/01/2026 10:22

After much pleading my aunt took me aged 13 to have mine pieced. My late mum never had pierced ears x

NotMeekNotObedient · 14/01/2026 10:22

I had mine done about 7 after lots of begging. Got infected. Had them re-done about 12. I wear simple, small gold, diamond studs. I leave them in all the time. I'm glad I got them pierced but don't really notice them. I think most of my friends as teens had them. Not really noticed if my adult friends have them.

If DD want them, I'd let her but around 12 or 13.

onceagainforrose · 14/01/2026 10:21

I don’t have them - the idea freaks me out, although I have no problem with piercings on other people. I had to leave the shop when my younger sister had hers done at about age 11.

EmpressaurusKitty · 14/01/2026 10:20

I had mine done when I was about 10 but haven’t worn earrings for about 30 years, just lost interest.

I think piercing babies’ & toddlers’ ears is dodgy AF.

RedRiverShore6 · 14/01/2026 10:14

I did when I was young but let them close up because earrings irritated my ears, I had a piercing at the top of my ear that I had to go to the GP within a week because it was all swollen, I haven't worn earrings for over 40 years now.

8TinyToeBeans · 14/01/2026 10:12

I can't say I pay all that much attention but thinking of the women in my family - my grans didn't have theirs pierced. They wore clip ons. My mum doesn't have hers pierced either and doesn't wear any earrings. I didn't get mine pierced until I was 30 because my mum always said I could have mine done as soon as I was old enough to care for them myself cause they icked her out...but I never cared enough to bother. I eventually got them done cause I decided I wasn't doing long hair anymore and felt that having my ears pierced balanced out the masculinity of the 'short back and sides'!

SockQueen · 14/01/2026 10:10

I'm 41 and don't have mine pierced. Parents weren't keen initially, and then I just wasn't bothered enough about it to do it. I still think maybe I should, but I've never quite wanted it enough. I'd definitely say it was more usual to have them pierced than not, but it's not something I look at a lot of the time.

shhblackbag · 14/01/2026 10:08

Me.

HoseGoblin · 14/01/2026 10:06

I do, had them pierced in Claire's when I was in primary school! Haven't worn earrings for about a decade though so I've no idea if I even could now or if they've closed over.

I know a lot more younger women who don't have them pierced at all now, I think getting them done in childhood went out of fashion.

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 14/01/2026 10:04

I don’t have pierced ears and I’m in my 30s. I did get them pierced in my late 20s but actually hated wearing earrings so they healed up pretty quickly after that. I don’t ever wear clip on or any sort of earrings though. If I did, I’d just get them pierced as an adult.

Mumofmarauders · 14/01/2026 10:02

I don’t (mid-40s). No real reason, just never fancied it. I haven’t noticed whether lots of my friends do or don’t! My dd10 has no interest but when she’s older if she wanted to I wouldn’t have a problem.

ItsameLuigi · 14/01/2026 10:02

I have mine done (and stretched, I did them myself in the cupboard at school with a earring 🫠). My 6 year old doesn't yet and I refuse until she is able to go to a real piercing studio. I disagree heavily with babies and toddlers being pierced as all piercings should be done with consent. Do you want them pierced? You're never too old to get a piercing!

BillieWiper · 14/01/2026 09:58

My mum doesn't have them. It's true I'd say the majority do. I think it looks quite nice just a plain ear. I have three or four on each.

If you've got piercings and you don't wear them the empty holes, though tiny, aren't especially attractive.

I hate those flesh tunnel stretched earlobes. I think that's gone out of fashion now but to me small attached earlobes are attractive, not big dangly elephant ears?!

KimberleyClark · 14/01/2026 09:54

I had them done at 19 - 46 years ago now. But I only wear earrings very occasionally.

Heylittlesongbird · 14/01/2026 09:52

I’m exactly the same as you OP, for the same reasons and a similar age.

pandowo · 14/01/2026 09:48

OrlandointheWilderness · 14/01/2026 08:39

I had them done at 11 and then let them close up. Tried again two years ago, they took a year to heal, I left them without earrings for 5 hours and they closed up and I’ve not bothered again!

I had this issue with getting some more ear piercings as an adult, I shit you not 3 years to heal and I’m still not sure they 100% are ! I think as we age things take longer to heal

TwooooDoooozenRoses · 14/01/2026 09:43

I’m 31 and it was incredibly unusual not to have pierced ears by the time you were, say, 14. My best friend didn’t as her mum was quite strict re body modifications (religious reasons!) and it was unusual enough to be commented on every so often. I think she had them done in the end, maybe in her uni years? Wild 🤪
I think I was about 11 or 12 when I got my first lobes and now have 7 in one ear and 6 in the other.
