To have put my rubbish in the neighbours bin

The people opposite me, who were tenants, moved out just a couple of days before Christmas.
The house doesn't have a "to let" sign or anything up yet, and there's definitely noone living there. However, today was bin day and someone, presumably the owner, had been round and put the wheelie bin out ready last night.
The binmen come at 7am.
At 6:45am, I had the idea of maybe adding a bag of my rubbish to their black bin, if it wasn't full, as I am still trying to catch up from Christmas and have extra.
I nipped over the road, had a peek and there was nothing but one single Tesco carrier bag of rubbish in there.
I went back inside, tied up my own full bin bag of rubbish from my kitchen bin and carried it over the road. By this time, I could hear the bin lorries already coming so I know noone was going to be using that space in that bin.
I then took the bin back up their drive for them.
I went back inside, very pleased with myself for now having completely empty bins.
DH was horrified and said it was very cheeky behaviour and very embarrassing. He really hopes noone saw.

Was it cheeky and embarrassing?

If I have too many bags. I will sometimes check the street to see if someone has put out their bags and has under the max amount, and then put a bag there. Single occupants often do have space.
I wouldn't mind someone doing this to me, so I assumed noone else would mind either.

I'd rather that than have people not having their rubbish taken and attract rats etc

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 14/01/2026 10:01

I think it’s fine OP. Unless there was a dead body in the bag or something like that.

No harm done

She asked because her husband thought it was cheeky.

I don’t think she’s distressed?!

Oh don’t be ridiculous!

Do you find people are very unwilling to ever help you out?

😂 On the contrary..

peacefulpeach · 14/01/2026 09:16

She did trespass onto their property. To put it back (after she’d used it without permission, not as a selfless gesture), yes well done.

what other services do you use that you don’t pay for? I think it’s cheeky.

She pays for waste collection, it would’ve been collected the next week if she couldn’t have put it in the other bin. It’s not something she’s not paying for.

You have a certain amount in your account and then they charge by weight (I think it weighs as they lift!). I get it in a way but have been caught out once or twice when it was much heavier and so more expensive than the week before

When is bin day and we have extra we just put the bag next to the bin. They would rather take the bin bag off the floor then having to remove it from an overfilled bin so they always send messages to us don't overfill just put next to it. Black or recycling doesen't matter it always gets picked up if is on the kerb. I sm surprised people look for space in neighbours bins, I lived here 10 years and it never was a problem for us.

Our bin men wont take extra bags and wont take overfilled bins either. We get constant emails about it.

Jumungo · 14/01/2026 09:38

It annoys me when my neighbour does this, as sometimes she'll put stuff in ours, filling it to the top and then when we go to add something in the morning our stuff won't fit 😠

If no one is using it as in your case, then fair game. I'd just be wary if it's actively being used.

If my neighbour's bin is out for collection and not full, I do sometimes stick some extra cardboard, green waste or a bag of rubbish in there and I don't care if they do likewise. The only time I was annoyed was when the Airbnb guest next door put non recyclable stuff in my recycling (disposable bbq) and the bin men therefore didn't empty it (they take a look in before they hook the bin up).

bluegreengreenblue · 14/01/2026 09:23

Hmm. When we moved into our rental both bins were crammed with rubbish. I was not impressed! But it was bin day- so I guess just don’t get in the habit? And obviously don’t put anything too manky in there?

It’s technically flytipping.

No, it's the opposite of fly tipping as she used a bin 🤣

BringBackCatsEyes · 14/01/2026 08:59

Well that's not what happened. The bin was on the road side and OP put some rubbish in 15 mins before it was collected.

NotnowMildrid · 14/01/2026 09:01

I would much rather a neighbour did what you did, rather than leave excess bags of rubbish outside that attract rodents and foxes who make a complete mess out of them.

Good of you to put the bin back afterwards, as it helps to make the house look occupied.

Andepeda · 14/01/2026 09:01

I could write a book about my bin problems with my neighbours. CF's doesn't cover it.

You've caused no problems for any one OP, non event.

I’m with your DH. Going on someone else’s property and helping yourself to using their bins, without permission (you don’t know them/ aren’t friends), is questionable / entitled. Embarrassing for you as he says! But I can see I’m in a minority 🤷‍♀️

I can't understand for the life of me why anyone would begrude their unused bin space to anyone. Keeps the neighbourhood clean and tidy and costs nobody anything? I guess we're all different!

ETA I think the bin was already out on the roadside for collection. I do agree that trespassing on the property would cross a line.

chattychatchatty · 14/01/2026 08:49

I really don’t understand DH’s reaction. Trust he’s happy to make the tip run another time rather than risk the supposed public humiliation of getting caught using empty space in a wheelie bin?

Full disclosure, in the good old days before parking apps I would offer a parking ticket with time remaining to someone coming in as I was leaving, and many people did the same to me. I guess DH would be appalled about that too!

ForFunGoose · 14/01/2026 08:44

The service is fully paid - she’s presumably paid council tax as has this neighbour.

Tresd · 14/01/2026 08:47

As long as your rubbish was properly bagged with no smells or leaks - your bag was “clean”, then doing this 15 mins before collection is ok.

I don’t like people putting dog shit in my bin. Even bagged, it stinks and the bin still stinks after collection. I also don’t want anyone putting a bag in the night before - as I may go out with a bag in the morning. And yes, obviously if the collection hasn’t happened for whatever reason, you would have needed to remove the bags.

we are on collections once every 3 weeks now. I have to manage this carefully and put small handfuls of rubbish into my car to shove in random bins like at petrol stations etc. if I’ve had food in somewhere like McD then that will stay in my car until I find a bin to shove it.

We were away for a few days at Christmas and didn't have a lot of recycling at that point. (Normally lovely) neighbours put a load of boxes in our bin (not broken down) and a plastic bag of packaging which I had to move into our general bin.

Because of the snow and ice, our post-Christmas recycling collection was eventually cancelled altogether so I have several large boxes in my hall and an indoor bin full of recycling waiting to go out once the collection finally happens.

So yes, quite fucking cheeky.

But the OP certainly did nothing wrong in this case and her DH needs to unclench..

That's quite different to OP's situation.

StephensLass1977 · 14/01/2026 08:42

I don't see how fines come into it when she put her rubbish into a bin correctly? It might not have been her bin (which is where the potential "cheeky" aspect comes into it) but it's still being correctly disposed of.
