Wasn't allowed to use disabled toilet despite the fact no other toilet was available. AIBU?

Seaside town with beach that stretches about 1.5 miles away from town centre with just flats and houses facing beach, ie no pubs or cafés that might let me use the toilet. It's about 10am rainy January morning, nobody else about apart from about two/three people and dogs on the beach.
Half way along on seafront is a public toilet block. Both mens and womens shuttered up and locked. Disabled toilet, locked, had a phone number to call for remote access so they could let people in. Called number and despite me pleading that I was desperate for the loo (I was) and pointing out no others available, I was refused absolutely point blank access because I wasn't disabled.
I don't think this is fair at all, but what do others think?
YANBU - she should have let you in.
YABU - no way should she have let you in regardless of how much you needed the loo.

In the OP's case I don't think there were.

So people have to wild wee? I can just imagine what the pearl clutchers of MN would make of that!

You don't think there were because that's what OP said. I'm betting there was somewhere she could have went.

When did I say she had to "wild wee"? Is that the only other option?

My DH once told me his grandmother used a "She wee" (I had no idea what it was until then! 😂) That would be an acceptable alternative, no? 😉

(That was a joke for those that won't get that).

Well there soon will be a queue if every Tom Dick and Harry who is caught short thinks CP facilities are for them. They aren't!

This.🙄

Some people seem to be missing the point: the changing places facility wasn’t ‘open’ either.

If OP wants to blame someone then she needs to ask the council why they close the public toilets during the winter.

If she thinks she may ‘get caught short’ then wear continence products (that’s what they were designed for). My adult son has to wear nappies because he’s doubly incontinent.

Imagine she’d wanted a buy a sandwich from the cafe but it was closed. However, the Michelin star restaurant next door was open, would she insist they make a sandwich for her for a couple of quid and then get shitty when they said no?

I’m glad so many of you never have the need to use a changing places facility. Our lives are hard enough as it is without finding the CP hoist hasn’t been put on charge or the bench broken, because anyone has been allowed to use the toilet.

There's a big difference between buying a sandwich and going to the loo!

However, I take the point that the CP loos are a special category.

I agree with all of your points.

However, just needing a piss isn't a reason to use an accessible toilet.

As I said, there would have been other toilets around she could have used.

igelkott2026 · 16/01/2026 16:21

I saw on LinkedIn yesterday that a Bill has been tabled in Ireland to require businesses to allow disabled people to use their toilets.

Question is - what counts as a disability?

Or build more accessible loos - even better.

Avantiagain · 15/01/2026 13:25

"They have to be cleaned and checked after every use to make sure equipment is in place and properly charged."

That won't happen unless it is in a private facility. All the ones we use are in public places with radar key access.

But if the other toilets don't exist, or are closed, what are people supposed to do?

I fully support disabled people having access to toilets kitted out for them.

I don't support disabled people who think their needs trump another person's all of the time, under any circumstances whatsoever.

If you, or any disabled person, need to wait because someone is already in the toilet, that person will only have used it out of desperation.

Not all people with a mobility issue have urgency, or need to change a stoma bag. Some will be happy and not inconvenienced at all by having to wait 2 minutes.

People's needs differ. Some need more space if they have a wheelchair.

Others need a toilet fast because of some medical issue.

Other people need a toilet when the others are closed or out of order.

No one should judge, because people with IBS, or bladder diseases, or who are on medication that makes them pee more or have diarrhea don't go around with a label on their heads.

If anyone uses a loo with 'accessibility' it's because they need to.

Tell the authorities that!

So similar scenario, mother and child parking at supermarkets, someone without a child parks in one leaving parents with a child unable to use them. Just because a parent with child hasn't arrived at that point doesn't mean its a free for all.

Edited

Local authorities have no jurisdiction in this area
This scenario isn’t imbedded as a right in building regs or the EA

The public toilet situation in this country is absolutely desperate (pun intended). Every single person needs to pee/poo while out using public amenities, so if there are no toilets, people will and do have to risk going in bushes, alleys etc…I see so many outraged posts on social media about human waste in public areas and how disgusting people are, but it’s a problem being driven by utter lack of other options.

I understand that public toilets have been used for drug abuse and other vices. Twas ever so - but the solution can’t be that we just don’t have toilets at all. It’s ableist in particular; the country is full of people with disabilities who don’t qualify for legal recognition or any benefits, and the lack of provision means they basically can’t go out and enjoy public spaces.

The use of accessible toilets isn’t linked to benefit entitlement or diagnosed disability - they are designed for anyone who needs them. Changing Places toilets are not accessible toilets and not interchangeable as such. They are reserved for those more severely disabled who need a carer to help, or need to use the specific equipment provided. So your argument doesn’t stand.

Rosscameasdoody · 15/01/2026 09:38

Vivi0 · 14/01/2026 18:59

Again, can you just answer the question please?

Would you prefer someone wet or soil themselves over using a CP toilet in a situation where all other toilets are locked up?

Yes. CP toilets are not designed for this purpose. They are not even accessible to all disabled people - they are specifically designed for those with severe disability who need a carer in with them or have to use the specific equipment provided. They have to be cleaned and checked after every use to make sure equipment is in place and properly charged.

So direct question, direct answer. No. OP is not entitled to use them, and yes, the choice for OP on this occasion was to walk five minutes further on to where facilities were open, pee ‘in the wild’ or wet herself. This is just one more example non disabled people feeling entitled to appropriate a disability provision never meant for them.

Er, yes it does. Parent and child parking spaces are advisory which means they should be left for those with children, but if there’s nowhere else to park they can be used by anyone. And parents themselves abuse them - if the child isn’t leaving the car, they shouldn’t be used.

Yes. Had the Changing Places toilet been locked with a key, that would have been the end of that.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/01/2026 00:32

I have to say I think I would have just peed beside a wall or similar as men so often do.

But I think they should have let the OP use it. I think the key thing is that there ought to have been mens and women’s toilets in that vicinity which were unexpectedly out of service. So the service that should have been available was not available - I think that is the difference between this and just letting any old person use any CP toilet.

Walking any distance when you’re busting is agony.

I agree there should be many more disabled toilets and facilities like CP for those who need them. But the fact there aren’t doesn’t mean that the OP should have been left in discomfort.

Have you ever considered how the thousands of disabled people who need this type of facilitiy cope, given there must be a few thousand public toilets or toilets within buildings for every one of these specialist Changing Places style facilities. Who helps these people out when they are desperate?

I went to a hospital for an appointment with my disabled niece (a grown woman), accessible toilets are no good for her, she needs to be changed but she is an adult and most public bathroom floors are not suitable for this due to size and poor cleaning. Even in the hospital there were no suitable facilities for her as a visitor, she had to use incontinence wear for the day. That is not acceptable and these changing places are a life line to people like her.

My Changing Place has a cleaning facility too (shower with hoist etc) because when I got married we couldn't find a hotel where my niece could shower etc so we took her to the local changing place.

She doesn't have the option to pee on a beach or nip into the mens. Maybe the woman in question should try incontinence wear like my niece must resort to when she is out.

Its not nice is it, and yes it does sound disrespectful but its the grim reality of disabled facilities in this country and when there are adequate facilities for all, ,then you can share when needed.

SweetHydrangea · 13/01/2026 19:47

I agree under normal circumstances but in this instance the OP was about to wet herself. Are you honestly suggesting that a grown woman should have the make the choice to wee on a public beach in full view of anyone passing by or wet herself, when there is a toilet there that isn’t being used or needed? I really do find this kind of attitude awful. Everyone deserves equal rights, this toilet gives people who need the extra equipment the ability to use it, but it was never intended to be at the expense of other people who don’t need to use a hoist etc. It sounds like the OP has incontinence issues which she doesn’t consider to be a disability but actually is and the changing places websites states that these facilities are for people with these issues to be able to use them. Even if she didn’t, I think refusing to allow someone to use an empty toilet when they were about to wet themselves is vile. Let’s face it, I can’t imagine they were inundated with calls to use if that day were they? Just being petty for the sake of it.

Yes, that's my point. When they're only opened by radar key then they're clearly not accessible to all. And yes, massive cutbacks - I've seen so many public toilets closed permanently over the last thirty odd years.

Oh agree masses have closed
Now we are forced to buy a coffee on b….. Starbucks in order to justify the right to a wee
Fare enough private businesses shouldn’t have to clean up after randoms off the street
but we all know not everyone can hold it in ….pregnant women, those who’ve had kids and anyone with incontinence and desperate for a wee or a clean up are stuck with nothing

To the poster who said there’s a supermarket etc on every high street No there isn’t. I assure you

To the poster who said go before you leave the house No that’s not how it works
