What time do you go to bed and get up (excluding caring responsibilities)?

Obviously if you've got caring responsibilites etc that involve getting up at night this isnt a reasonable question to ask!

What time do you go to bed and get up and how much sleep do you need?

To feel properly refreshed I need 10+ hours. This would involve going to bed before 8 which just isnt practical. It's ridiculous.

If I have 2 nights in a row with less than 6hrs each, I cant function on the third day.

I'm trying to get into a better routine of going to bed at the same time every night and getting up at the same time every morning. Hopefully this will help. So 10pm - 6am.

My husband thinks he's a night owl (he isnt which is why he is knackered all the time but that's another discussion) so basically, I'm not going to see him much without the children.

At the moment I seem constantly pissed off with him so that may be a good or bad thing!

Go to bed at 10pm, probably sleep around 11pm but get up at 4.45am to walk dog, get children up, ready for school so I can be in work for 7am.
Mon-Fri (Not in UK).

Usually lights off by 11pm in week, alarm goes off 6.30am.
Both numbers an hour or so later at the weekend, so about the same amount of sleep. I'm almost always awake when the alarm goes anyway.

I dont have much trouble going to sleep, but always wake up after a couple of hours and often struggle going back to sleep these days. I reckon I average about 5 hours a night. But I manage ok so I don't worry about it too much. I "rest" in bed for 7-8 hours which I think is enough.

familyissues12345 · 13/01/2026 15:17

In bed about 10.30, aim to be asleep by 11pm. DH wakes me up after his shower, usually just before 7am

tillyandmilly · 13/01/2026 15:17

Go to bed 12.30 am - wake up at 8.30 am - whereupon I start work at 9.00 am!

Then the problem is really that he’s being a crap dad and partner by kipping out of his responsibilities. He can choose to stay up until the small hours if he wants, but he also has to understand that there’s going to be an alarm going off at whatever time the household needs to get up at and if that doesn’t wake him you’re going to be sending the DC in to get him up to feed / dress / play with them.

If you’ve already tried that and nothing has changed, you need to rethink the relationship. How many hours anyone else needs to sleep to feel refreshed and the hours they do it between is their circus, we’re all different, you have a lazy and disrespectful husband problem.

100%, why should DH get to opt out of parenting duties just because he's a night owl? So am I, but I've had to readjust so that I can get up at the same time as DH and the kids so I can do my part and be involved in family life.

Sleeping from 1130-7 is fine for me, that's all I need. I'm not sure how saying that this helps you though?

But the elephant in the room here is your husband saying he's "off duty" until 10am every day. That's absolutely not OK when you have children. My wife and I nominate one day each weekend when one of us sleeps in until 9ish so we each get one "lie in" a week, but other than that from 7am until kids bedtimes it is teamwork.

That's how my husband and I tend to arrange things post army (everything was a bit more sporadic then!). We alternate getting DS organised for school in the morning. He does his long cycle on a Saturday with me doing my long run on Sunday so we know the house/kids etc are sorted and there is a decent meal prepped for after.

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 13/01/2026 15:00

Roughly 11pm-7am - I find less sleep hard. Weekends I’ll easily sleep till 8.30am

mondaytosunday · 13/01/2026 14:59

Around 2pm and get up around 10am. Might be awake for a bit before I get out of bed.

Gettingbysomehow · 13/01/2026 14:57

Im in bed by 10pm all devices and tv go off then Ill read for an hour or two then Im up at 6am for work.

His sleep is his business. I'm not dictating anything to him.

But yes, anything before 10am in the week and whatever time on the weekend is my responsibility. It sucks and is unfair on me and the children (and I'm resentful and it's one of the primary reason I get pissed off at him) but it's not going to change and isn't worth my breath anymore. Yesterday we had a huge row because our eldest was being "difficult" before school. He came down in a foul mood and had the audacity to start getting involved and criticising me when he didnt have a clue what was going on.

But that isnt the point of this thread.

Re caring responsibilities, I just meant if the kids get you up at 5 or if you have a newborn etc. becsuse that messes up sleep patterns completely.

10 till 5

jamandcustard · 13/01/2026 14:07

I go to bed about 9-9.30, asleep by 11.30.
Awake by 7.30 latest during the week, normally closer to 7.

Weekends I’m awake by 8.

BangFlash · 13/01/2026 13:59

Now all DC are out of school my alarm is 7.30am, sometimes even 8am. Last 20 years it has been 6.something. My god the difference it makes!

Go to bed a little before midnight, asleep before 1am. That was always the case, I can't sleep any earlier and also wouldn't have had time to actually do anything between (SEN) DC bedtime and mine.

DH goes to bed at similar time and would naturally sleep until well after 9 but realises we have responsibilities. He doesn't speak until after 9 though!

ChillingWithMySnowmies · 13/01/2026 13:48

I go to bed about 11, usually don't sleep til about 1.30-2am.
I wake up between 7:00 and 7:30 to get teens up and moving for college, although weekends it can be as late as 10am if i don't have to be up for anything.

I need 6 hours if i'm left to sleep. I often only get 5 on a good night. I can function on 4.

Mydogisagentleman · 13/01/2026 13:09

Bed by 9, up without an alarm at 05.45. Leave for work at 06.30.
I occasionally manage to get an hour or so in the afternoon if I'm lucky

ukathleticscoach · 13/01/2026 13:05

Bed 12:-12;30 on average up at 7 during the week. DW get up at 6:30 sometimes goes 30 mins earlier. Kids go a bit late 9 and 10:30 but they sleep in until just after 7 and go to sleep straight away. So they are not waking us up early like when younger

Am definitely a night owl would always run much better in the afternoon/ evening than morning. Find it easier to get up now though

I don't see the point going to bed an hour or two earlier then struggling to sleep. I read a book then am asleep in 5 mins

Should really go to bed a bit earlier but evening is the only time of day to yourself. Otherwise its just a robotic life work eat sleep. Have been trying not to stay up late at weekends as that messes you up even though I don't really drink

NovemberMorn · 13/01/2026 13:04

I have always been a night owl. Now I can please myself my body clock has settled to bed at 2am, read till 3am, get up around 10am.
When I do have occasion to get up early, before 7am, it makes me feel physically ill.

Greenwriter76 · 13/01/2026 12:59

In the week I get into bed around 9.30pm and go to sleep at around 10pm. Alarm goes off 6.15am. I love my sleep and I also like to have a cuppa in bed in the morning, and I have to get up at 7am.
At weekends I go to bed at the same time and if I’m lucky with young DD laying in for a bit I wake up 6.45 / 7 ish, and we get up by 8.
DH goes to work earlier than me and finishes very late (including some weekends) so generally at weekends he lies in until closer to 9am.

OrlandointheWilderness · 13/01/2026 12:47

up at 6, bed generally 10.30. I need 8 hours ideally though 😂

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 13/01/2026 12:45

I head up to bed around 11pm but by the time I've got my stuff ready for the morning, etc. it's 11.15 then I'll read and switch off by 11.45pm.

I set the alarm for 6.15 on work days and 5.15 on gym days so get around 6 hours sleep which isn't great but I'm not sacrificing my evenings just to go to bed!

Migrainedays · 13/01/2026 12:42

Last night I think i dozed of at 2.30 am couldn't sleep for the life of me.
Woke at 10.45am.

Boododedoop · 13/01/2026 12:35

My sleep is all to pot just now but I think it’s because I’m now closer to 70 than 65. But I am working on it and I have started going back to sleep again if I’ve been awake from 3 - 5 am. It usually gets me a couple of hours to 7ish that I enjoy.

TheRealLillyAllenVerifiedAccount · 13/01/2026 12:34

LordofMisrule1 · 13/01/2026 12:23

Bed by 730pm, asleep for 830-9pm. Awake naturally around 6am.

Do you miss your evenings?

I tend to sleep from 3 am until 6am (peri menopause) and then every now again I sleep for about 16 hours straight!

HRT was a godsend for me. Peri drove me to despair. The insomnia and night sweats left me feeling dreadful and like a zombie. I need at least 8 straight hrs of sleep to function properly. I must say, regular exercise and cutting out wine has helped enormously.

hohahagogo · 13/01/2026 12:31

I go to be between 10 and 10.30 and get up at 8 typically, I’m not asleep constantly as i sleep terribly
