What time do you go to bed and get up (excluding caring responsibilities)?

Obviously if you've got caring responsibilites etc that involve getting up at night this isnt a reasonable question to ask!

What time do you go to bed and get up and how much sleep do you need?

To feel properly refreshed I need 10+ hours. This would involve going to bed before 8 which just isnt practical. It's ridiculous.

If I have 2 nights in a row with less than 6hrs each, I cant function on the third day.

I'm trying to get into a better routine of going to bed at the same time every night and getting up at the same time every morning. Hopefully this will help. So 10pm - 6am.

My husband thinks he's a night owl (he isnt which is why he is knackered all the time but that's another discussion) so basically, I'm not going to see him much without the children.

At the moment I seem constantly pissed off with him so that may be a good or bad thing!

I sleep 7 hours a night. But I always wake up at about 5 am, whatever time I go to bed, so then I don't get enough sleep if I've gone to bed after 10 pm.

Normally, it's lights out at 9.30 pm.

I just can't sleep longer than seven hours!

EarringsandLipstick · 13/01/2026 18:20

My sleep is terrible 😔

I used to be a night owl. Once I hit 40 / peri, my body clock shifted to wanting to be in bed by 9, up by 5… sleep was dreadful for a few years but HRT was a lifesaver.

I get up before 5 every day as I exercise intensively each morning, back before teens need to be up.

Unfortunately, they all do a lot of sports at different times / locations, so my evenings are spent racing between work, activity & home & so I can’t go to bed when I want to.

I’m often so shattered I fall asleep in my clothes, lying on the bed or without being properly ready for bed. I still get up very early but am rarely rested, it’s a mess.

I don’t associate bedtime with anything but stress.

My teen sons are a nightmare - they have to be supervised right the way into bed, no chance for me to just go to bed early myself & leave them to it.

I am desperately trying to sort it out, aware it’s not good for me. At all.

Itiswhysofew · 13/01/2026 18:13

Go bed 11.30 pm'ish. I dont like going to sleep, so I put it off until 1.30am.

Up at 8.00am.

6 hours is fine for me.

Emmz1510 · 13/01/2026 18:06

I also seem to need to a lot of sleep. I go to bed between 10 and 11. I’m a hybrid worker who is sometimes in the office sometimes wfh. If I’m in the office I’m up between 6:15 and 7 depending when my first appointment is and if I’m wfh I’m up at 7:45 to wake dd for school (when I’m in office she goes to breakfast club and gets up earlier too). Obviously it’s different at weekends. Despite that seeming to be enough sleep, I find often I could easily do another two hours! I’m not a morning person but it’s easier in spring and summer.

SnowyVillage · 13/01/2026 17:15

I go to bed between 9 and 10. DD usually wakes me up between 6 and 7. You'd think that would be enough sleep but medical issues mean I'm up every hour or two for the loo. I also sleep very lightly so the dog or DD often wake me up in the night too.

Very jealous of DH who comes to bed between 10 and midnight, doesn't get up till 8:30 (later on the weekend) and actually sleeps solidly all night.

butterdish93 · 13/01/2026 16:51

Go to bed at 9:30, wake at 7. Still tired.

would naturally sleep in till 8:30 ish if no alarm and would probably prefer to go to bed at ten but I like to go to bed at the same time as husband.

BlackCat14 · 13/01/2026 16:28

I feel like I’m someone who needs a good amount of sleep to function properly. My boyfriend has about six hours a night and I don’t know how he gets though the day.
Im currently on mat leave so it’s not my usual routine, but at the moment I go to bed about 10.30/10.45 and my baby wakes like clockwork at 8am. So just over 9 hours a night. Before my baby, when I was at work I’d sleep 10.30-7.15ish.

user1497787065 · 13/01/2026 16:08

In bed by 10 and awake at about 5-5.30

PizzaPowder · 13/01/2026 16:06

Lights out at 10 and get up at half past 7/8 o'clock depending on the day.

I need a lot of sleep or i am a grumpy old git.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 13/01/2026 16:05

6.30 am to 22.30.
Some nights I stay up late for some peace and quiet.

AgnesMcDoo · 13/01/2026 16:03

I generally go to bed about 11pm and get up at 8am.

DH goes about midnight to 1am and gets up about the same time as me.

Sunloungerhogger · 13/01/2026 16:01

Actually, I’m going to add something quite significant to the above. My DH and I are currently sleeping in separate rooms. My DH is a terrible sleeper, he takes ages to get to sleep, he too thinks he’s a night owl. Compounded by the fact I snore - I can’t help it, I wish I could. Which causes stress for both of us as if I’m sleeping well, I’m probably disturbing him, and if not, I’m lying there unable to fall asleep as I’m paranoid about snoring and waking. Compounded by the fact he had a serious accident which he’s still recovering from. It’s affected his sleep (he’s always been quite obsessive about his sleep, prob because it’s always been an issue for him, now very much more so), and it’s also had a big impact on me, so rest is pretty Important to both of us really. We love each other deeply, our marriage is strong. We’re just both prioritising getting a good night sleep. And my gosh, I sleep a million times better when it’s just me by myself (and he sleeps better too without me snoring, and if by chance he does have a bad night’s sleep, at least it’s not my fault!).

boogietrapps · 13/01/2026 15:57

I go to bed at 9:30, asleep by 10 and then up at 6:30.

Sunloungerhogger · 13/01/2026 15:55

I go to bed between 10:00 - 10:30, and usually lights out by/just before 11:00. I only set my alarm on days I’m going into the office, for 07:00. The irony being on every other day, work and weekend, I usually wake up around 7 anyway or just before, and then on alarm days for some reason I’m fast asleep when it goes off. I used to think I ideally need 9 hrs sleep to feel at my best, as that was as when I would wake up if left naturally with no other factors (alarm/any other noise waking me) but these days I seem to be pretty consistently waking naturally after about 8hrs (maybe it’s because my sleeping and waking times are much more consistent overall than when I was younger - eg fewer late nights and then later wake ups at the weekend). I definitely feel a bit rubbish if I get 7 or less, will function fine on 7 but can feel it, and less than 7 and I’m a bit unhappy.

muddyford · 13/01/2026 15:55

Bed at 9.00, read till 9.45. Up at 6.00 (and 4.30 for loo...).
Though I'm a carer for DH he rarely needs me overnight.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 13/01/2026 15:53

For many years now, I've gone to bed between 11pm and midnight and woken by 4.45 - 5.30am. It was fine when I was younger, but I'm feeling the strain now. The thing is, I've always needed very few hours of sleep. My mum says that even as a toddler, I'd wake up at 4 or 5am and just start singing or reading out loud.
I'd give anything to be able to sleep until just 7am once or twice a week but, once I'm awake, that's it, I'm awake!

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 13/01/2026 15:52

Oooonoooo · 13/01/2026 11:46

I genuinely cannot remember the last time I slept more than 4 hours without waking up and then tossing and turning for at least an hour before going back to sleep!
I go to bed about 10ish but am awake until about midnight.
I am usually awake between 4-5 am and then sleep from 7am to 9 am .
Weirdly when I was in Australia recently I slept so much better!!

It might be the sunlight affecting you. Try a sunlight lamp?

goodnightssleepbenice · 13/01/2026 15:51

I go to bed about 11 ish ( take an amitriptyline so rarely wake up now , sleep was horrendous before ) asleep by about 11.30 then alarm goes off at 6.30 and get up at 6.45. At the weekend I go to bed about midnight and lie in til 10ish

Starlightsprite · 13/01/2026 15:49

I try to be asleep for midnight and am up about 7.15am, about 7 hours and I can cope. Any less and I would be shattered.

I totally get why you’re asking OP. I used to ask lots of little things like this when I was questioning the fairness in my relationship, it helped me to stay sane and say to myself ‘all these people thought x,y and z like me so I’m not crazy.’ It doesn’t help in the long run though if he’s unfair he’ll most likely remain unfair. Sorry, you’re describing me in terms of shouldering responsibility for the children and it’s 100% not fair and we deserve better.

Maryberrysbouffant · 13/01/2026 15:49

I’m awake anytime between 6-7 depending on what time I need a wee. I’m up at least twice in the night so if I wake at 5.30 it’s unlikely I’ll fall back asleep.

Usually go to bed at 10 and read for half an hour so I’m guessing my average is 7.5 hours - I’m not sure whether I feel “refreshed” or not 😂 I usually stagger out of bed and it takes me a few minutes of walking around before I’ve loosened myself up.

I have to say I’ve never not been able to function, even when I had responsibilities to kids and puppies who were getting me up in the night or early doors. Have you got other health issues at play?

Friendlygingercat · 13/01/2026 15:44

Im a night owl and dont have any set time to go to bed. Im also self employed on international projects. I often go about 3-4 am and get up 8-9 am. Then I have a 3 hour nap in the late afternoon. I love being up and awake when everyone else is asleep.

Fluffypiki · 13/01/2026 15:28

I go to sleep at 9pm and get up at 2am (start work at 3am) and sleep 2 hours from 1pm to 3pm.
More or less than 7hours is not good, I end up tired.
I should say I have ADHD and I am extremely hyper, I don't fall asleep I crash, I can fall asleep anywhere and anytime.

LandladyofTheValley · 13/01/2026 15:23

I've got atrocious times. I go to bed as soon as we close/finish up so 11.50pm in the week and Friday Saturday is usually after 1am. I can never sleep though for at least an hour.
I get up in the week at 7am. Yes it's mental. I get my teens up. Yes they get up themselves but alive got them up for school for years and years (we are in year 13 now). I do go back to bed but usually give up after about an hour and do admin from bed.
I am permanently exhausted but cope well with it after a while now.

ScarlettSunset · 13/01/2026 15:22

I usually go to bed about 11pm (though I am for 10.30pm twice a week) and get up between 5.30am and 6.30am

I've done that for many years now and it's what I'm used to. I set an alarm but I often wake up naturally before it goes off.

GreenMarigold · 13/01/2026 15:19

I go to sleep at around 11:30 and get up at 6:30 on a weekday.

If there is no alarm then I generally wake between 7 and 7:30 so I guess I could do with getting a bit more, but there’s no way I could go to sleep earlier! I’m not tired by then as it is!
