Bizarre things you couldnt fathom

Not AIBU. Just curious.
Have you ever experienced anything either publicly or privately that just didn't make sense or seemed bizarre or you just couldnt fathom in some way.
I was in a small cafe looking out on Trafalgar Square about 10 years ago. ..Alan Yentob walked in through the door. .I kept an eye constantly on the door because I wanted to get a good look at him when he walked out again but I didn't want to stare while he was in the cafe. I was by the window seat looking out on Trafalgar Square. After about 15 minutes i turned my head and looked round in the cafe and he was nowhere to be seen. It was a small cafe !! He wasnt sitting at any of the tables and I'd had my eye on the door the whole time so I know he couldn" t have slipped past me. There was no other exit and only some toilets. It was a really bizarre experience that I can't fathom to this day. I KNOW I never took my eye off the door. I just dont know where he went.

@Daygloboo according to google this did happen but I can understand being confused as to why it did!

I think it was on ITV. I know she was the Queen of Saturday night telly, but even so, I still find it bizarre that her funeral was.on tv.. I remember watching and thinking to myself ' what the hell am i watching ' and then years afterwards thinking did that actually happen or have i gone mad. It was so random. I think i remember Cliff and Paul O' Grady being there. I cant remember.who gave readings though....if it was showbiz friends or just the clergy people.

But a phone can’t get up and walk to the shed and lock itself in can it?

So the only explanation is that someone put it there. Or somehow when your back was turned your dh got it and was playing a trick. Maybe you misremember exactly what happened and you were out of the room for a minute.

The butternut squash - someone came in the back door and nicked it whilst her back was turned, playing a trick. Stranger things have happened.

Weird things have happened to me in life but they can always be explained. People just want to believe it’s something “woo” as they are susceptible to it. The day after my df died I got up in the morning and turned the radio on and his favourite (quite random song) came on the radio. It did give me a start but obviously it was just a coincidence. If thinking you’ve seen your dead relative or they’ve sent you a message from beyond etc brings you comfort then that’s nice, it’s no harm to anyone - but obviously you didn’t actually see them or smell their aftershave or whatever!

Occam’s razor.

That’s terrifying! 😫

It's terrifying bit also very funny. As if Alexa is absolutely stark raving mad.

I was sitting quietly reading one evening when Alexa started to laugh, really loud guffaws. I turned my head slowly to look at the speaker and the laughter stopped. 'She' then started to speak in Chinese. I was so freaked out I unplugged her. It never happened again.

That’s terrifying! 😫

My tongs disappeared from the rack with all the other kitchen stuff like slotted spoons, potato masher etc. I bought another one from Amazon and went to put it on the rack when it arrived and lo and behold the old one was back! No explanation for this, just weird!

House fairies. They pinch stuff all the time in our house. Usually they return them when you ask them nicely :)

Chap who took me to a party when I was young and gorgeous ended up with another girl sitting on his lap. Never got to the bottom of what happened there.
My small, perfect kitchen knife disappeared last year. Not seen it since.

I once came downstairs first thing in the morning - pre-children - to find a bouncy ball in the middle of the kitchen. Never did work it out!

Do you have a cat? Or, if no cat of your own, do you have a cat flap?

It's called Psychic Jukebox - me and my friend Tom have the same thing but with different songs. Mine is Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac and it comes on when I am thinking about people who have passed on. I lost a family member today and have come to the pub for tea as I didn't want to cook and to raise a glass. As soon as I sat down guess which song came on the speakers? You guessed it...

It was just on the radio as I read this! Radio 2 …

When I was a kid,I lived with my grandad

On the wall behind the sofa was a painting of wild horses running away from a fire

It always bothered grandad as it had been painted on the wrong side of the canvas

It was just a picture in a cheapy frame-you wouldn't think anything of it if you saw it

Every so often,it would crash to the floor (all hangings wouldn't have been touched-nail still intact) and grandad would say 'there's been a death'

Within 48 hours (normally less than half an hour) the phone would ring and the person would be saying 'such-and-such has died'

Human or animal,it didnt matter-this picture would lift itself off the wall and make a racket as it hit the floor

This was totally normal when I was a kid!

Sadly,my father's sister dumped the picture in the skip (along with everything I owned) when he was put in a home

Another one was years later and someone gave my then young dd a victorian doll on a stand

It had a green hat and dress/blonde hair/ringlets and weird blue eyes

I swear I used to feel her eyes follow me around and it creeped me out really badly but dd loved it so I couldn't get rid of it

We came to move house (horrid neighbours) and my sister in law helped to wrap it in newspaper and we binned it in the old houses wheelie bin-we agreed to tell dd that it had been lost in the move and she swore shed never say different (id never normally bin anything without the dcs permission, but this thing was starting to scare me)

I put the bin out and we moved house

A few months later, having unpacked ages ago,id gone into dds room to get some bits sorted before she went to school and myself to college-nothing out of the ordinary and the doll wasn't there as I would have seen it

Came home after a shattering day and she went into her room-there was the same doll sat either on her windowsill or bedside cabinet (I cannot remember) just staring at us

I fucking hated that doll until the day it just vanished again

Dd swore it had been in her room when she got up to go to school, but had vanished when we got home again-nobody else had been in the house all day

I've never been able to explain either

StephensLass1977 · 13/01/2026 10:46

In my old flat in London, around 7 years ago, it was a very hot day but I didn't yet have a window open as I had just got home. Very still day, no wind. Very quiet street, no large vehicles thundering past, nor any train stations nearby.

I had a freshly filled salt and pepper pot set. As I walked into the kitchen, both pots fell forward in unison. Just, clean fell down flat. I literally saw it happen. I was nowhere near the counter, nor had thrown down my bag or anything. Just, wham, both fell down.

Other odd stuff happened in that same month. A mirror fell off the wall but didn't break, and all the fixtures were perfectly intact. It could realistically only have come off like that if someone had taken it down - but it happened in front of my eyes.

I asked my sister to put a message out on her Facebook page and it turned out that my house stood on the exact spot where a children's asylum used to stand.

I’ve posted about these before…

I was wearing my AirPods to sleep one night and woke up and one had gone.
I hadn’t left the room and we spent weeks literally gutting the bedroom to find it but never did so I had to buy a replacement.

A few weeks later I had new carpet fitted so there was nowhere it could have been hiding when the room was completely emptied. My Dp had been awake reading and said I didn’t leave the room wearing the AirPods but surely even if I had we’d have found it anyway after 2 years?!

My dad used to wear a distinctive aftershave that stopped being made in this country so I ordered it from the US for every birthday and Christmas for him until he died in 2014.
My mum was diagnosed with cancer a few years later and the night she died there was me, my mums cat and my sisters dog all alone in the room. It wasn’t a nice death and my mum was hanging on but they upped her morphine and the last few hours were kind of peaceful.

The cat was lying on her tummy on the bed and the dog was curled up on the sofa opposite with me.
I’d been awake 22 hours and very drowsy when the smell of my dads aftershave filled the room and was so strong and distinctive so I was confused, suddenly the dog let out a howl and the cat started whining and my mum took her last breath.

I didn’t believe in anything supernatural and very much of the mindset that if we had no proof or scientific explanation then there must be a logical reason behind things, I’ve never found one that fits that night though.

I live very rurally on an old road where there have been a lot of accidents over the years.
I was walking home one night from the gym which is about 5 minutes from me in a hotel, the hotel and my house and a neighbouring one are the only buildings for miles. The road is unlit with no pavement and pretty scary but my car was in the garage.
I was nearly home when I heard a strange scratching noise behind me and when I turned to look behind me there was what looked like a man dressed in black but his body was like a shadow, he had a luminous white face with black eyes and I don’t recall any other facial features because I was just drawn to the eyes.
I can’t properly explain better then that because we made eye contact for a split second then I turned to look in front of me to see if anyone else was around or any cars passing and when I looked back the figure had gone.
The road was straight and it was so quick there was nowhere anyone could disappear to.

I ran the rest of the way home almost hysterical with panic and I don’t know if my Dp would have believed me if he hadn’t seen the state I was in.
I have walked a few times since but never seen the figure again and I’ve tried and failed to come up with an explanation but reading some of these stories I guess there will always be things we can’t find answers for, maybe we aren’t meant to know everything?

Please get your hubby to pick you up late at night from now on. Please.

I love the uncanny and the unexplainable. I’m sure a lot of things could be explained and answered and that a 1 in a billion coincidence is more likely than spirits, but… I come from a family of spiritualists and believers and was just brought up to accept that weird things happen and we just don’t understand it now.

After my grandmother died lots of things disappeared and reappeared in impossible places in the house. They would appear in the middle of a room or on the sofa, you could never have missed them. I’d rather think that my grandmother was just telling us she was ok from beyond the veil than we had someone in the house playing tricks. It was only me and my parents so it would have had to be them and it physically couldn’t have been.

I posted above about losing a knife, I’ve now asks out loud for it to be returned / found. Not dissimilar to praying to st Anthony!

I also grew up attending a church where people would stand up and tell people about their experiences with angels. Again, it was treated not as normal but completed accepted that angelic intervention happened.

Sorbae · 13/01/2026 10:03

We’d just come back from holiday, I was unpacking and I couldn’t find my wedding rings anywhere. I hadn’t been wearing them on holiday much as they were a little big and I kept thinking they’d slip off in the sea or on the beach. Our home was small and clutter free, easy to find things, dh and I looked everywhere. Every drawer, bags, including make up/toiletry bags, pockets, pots, shelves, under the bed, etc I even emailed the apartment we’d been staying in on holiday (even though I’m certain I didn’t leave them)

Anyway, 2 weeks past, still no luck finding them. I was naturally feeling quite sad about it. One morning, I’m getting ready in the bedroom, our little one was 18 months old at the time, she was playing with some of her toys next to me whilst I was doing my make up. I went out of the room to wash my hands, came back a minute later and dd is now stood up playing with something near the window, something shiny caught my eye, I get closer to see what she’s playing with and it’s only my engagement and wedding rings!

I still have no idea where/how she found them. They were definitely not on the widow ledge, it was empty apart from one plant and I’d dusted it a few times since coming back. The weird part is, I had jokingly asked my late nana and grandma for help finding them the day before when I was having yet another look around for them.

Something else i find bizarre in an entirely different way....not spooky or anything but just weird....was Cilla Black's funeral service. I think i remember it was on TV. I remember watching it at the tome and thinking ...what on earth is cilla's funeral doing on tv. Ive only ever seen royal funerals on tv. Does anyone else remember it ? I found it utterly weird. I cant think of any other celebrity who had a funeral on tv. Whenever i thonk about it i ssl myself...did that actually hsppen ?

Maybe he already had it though? Unless you know for certain you used it whilst he was out of the house it seems obvious that he had it. Maybe he had snuck in and got it? Maybe he got one of the dc’s involved in playing a trick on you?

Really, almost all of these are easily explainable and they pretty much all involve someone lying/playing tricks.

The glass bowl getting smashed whilst the ds was home alone for instance. He obviously just didn’t want to own up to it.

Objects can roll under kitchen units and down gaps in the floor. Or again, a partner playing a trick.

Jewellery boxes being stolen and then turning up in the Df’s drawers - well obviously it wasn’t stolen was it? (gambling addiction or the like maybe). I know someone who’s employee staged a theft in the office to steal money when she was “there alone”. She even had an injury and claimed to have been hit by one of the thieves. It was all a set up and only found out about by complete fluke.

Some people lie all the time. Even about seemingly stupid things.

Another thing I’d like to point out is that it’s a trait of narcissists/covert narcs/people with personality disorders is to hide belongings from their partners. They enjoy the other persons confusion and sense of panic and the feeling of power it gives them.

Hearing’s noises - noise can carry very far, especially if you’re in an attached house. We’re in a detached house and last night I heard voices in my room and when I investigated it was coming from outside quite far away but sounded loud. The wind was carrying the noise.

When we’re walking home alone late at night/have just woken from a deep sleep we our imagination can do all sorts of tricks on us. Night terrors can be very realistic.

We can often convince ourselves that something definitely happened when the reality is quite different. Tiredness/stress etc can be a big factor.

Obviously it could just be poltergeists but I’m
pretty sure they don’t exist.

If you read my original post; I was scrolling on my phone while I was cooking the kids tea, I put it down to dish up after I had dished up and put the plates on the table and the kids sat down to eat I turned to pick my phone back up and it was gone. DH wasn't even in the house at this point.
Anyway you remind me of Dr Ciaran O Keefe. Bending over backwards to explain things and reaching! I know it's a scary prospect to get your head around but sometimes weird things do happen! Hopefully one day something unexplainable will happen to you because until it does you won't believe it's possible x

While everything you say can objectively be true, it can't be denied that weird things do happen. And when it's something utterly mundane like my rocking cardboard box, or vanishing vegetables where the room is effectively seaked, it does beg the question how stress, or grief or tiredness could be the most obvious explanation when these things were not a factor in the moment.

We are wired for survival by pattern recognition, so when something occurs that disrupts our "normal" it sticks out. Yes, we should exhaust all logical possibilities, but sometimes things absolutely do defy explanation.

I often find the more mundane stories far more believable - the vanishing butternut squash for example - hardly the most riveting way to spice up your life.

Even the ones about passed loved ones I won't discount, given I saw my late DH about 5 weeks after he died, and the circumstances were such that I was not asleep or dreaming or mistaken. Obviously can't prove it but there we are.

Haha! No, I didn’t have a DH at the time and I talked to the barmaid and she showed me where it was written down in their notebook. Customer name (not me), customer number (my number).

I was in a pub once and my phone rang. It was the barmaid of the pub I was sitting in but she hadn’t intended to call me. She was meant to call another customer back but had written down the number incorrectly and had called my number by mistake. And weirdly I just happened to be there, in the same pub, at the same time.

He drove into the drive got out of the car came in the kitchen said hello. He had a tool in his hand from work he is a gardener. He wanted to put it in the shed so he went to the back door which was locked because I hadn't been out the back all day. Walked down to the shed unlocked the shed put the tool away then walked back up to the house walked in the kitchen where I was still looking for my phone and at this point the kids were helping me look because it was doing my head in. He came in holding my phone saying why was this in the shed and me and the kids did a collective gasp.
