Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

Oh no! I'm a grammar pedant too and autocorrect has sorely let me down this morning.

I'll have to self flagellate with the streaky bacon as punishment.

YABU to not specifically buy plain PJ bottoms and a big, long coat for precisely this reason.

You're right, my cosy jimjams have either reindeer on them or partridges in pear trees.

So it wouldn't even be seasonally appropriate for me to wear them to the supermarket now.

No get dressed I wouldn't do this

I see you went to Asda, so can understand why you thought it might be acceptable to wear pyjamas. I understand that this is the supermarket of choice for PJ wearers! 😁

It looks nice though and I hope you enjoy your breakfast!

Tbh I don't think I've ever seen anyone wear identifiable jammies in our local ASDA.

It's situated at the end of town where people are probably more likely to condemn jimjam wearing!

Never acceptable - Do you cook on PJ's? Assume you must then wash afterwards as can't imagine going back to bed with bacon smelling PJ's

Streaky bacon is rubbish when bought from a supermarket try some good quality butchers or farm shop streaky .Always make a trip to a good quality butchers before Christmas for the good stuff

Oh, I’m sure it’s better than the supermarket stuff. But the same applies to back bacon purchased in those establishments, so the quality differential remains.

MagneticSquirrel · 11/01/2026 12:38

Whoosh delivery from Tesco or Uber Eats grocery delivery - no need to get changed at all!

I object on the grounds that when I’ve had to queue behind people in pyjamas, they always, frankly, smell of overnight bums. Revolting. Wash, and dress in something suitable, for the sake of fellow shoppers, please.

The very idea of going outside my home unwashed is horrifying good lord .How are people not embarrassed

Gahr · 11/01/2026 12:35

YABU. I never want to see nightwear in supermarkets, it is completely inappropriate. This country is down-at-heel as it is and you want to make it even worse? Just no.

rosydreams · 11/01/2026 12:35

cardibach · 11/01/2026 12:29

Ypu are wrong. Streaky bacon is rubbish. Back bacon is the proper treat.

Ah, I fondly remember the most amazing PJ bottoms that were so comfy, plain charcoal, yoga-pants style so I could just stick a big winter coat over and no one was the wiser. Perfect for the winter school run.

Alas, I wore them so much I burned a hole in the thighs and they had to go.

You’re never going to get this idea past MN, where being “put together” is the pinnacle of social achievement 😂

I find it really fascinating that such high feeling is attached to really quite marginal differences in clothing. A pair of clean pyjamas doesn’t breach any concrete social rules in terms of decency; it’s basically a shirt and trousers, but it arouses disgust and contempt because it’s identifiable as “nightwear”. It’s a really weird quirk of human behaviour to me.

It’s not that. It’s because it’s not normally a clean pair is it, it’s the pair that’s been slept in all night (and however many previous nights). It’s dirty and smelly.

No. Let’s have some basic standards.

I became a fan of streaky over back bacon about twenty year’s ago after several visits to the US. I’ve been a convert ever since and only buy streaky now.

I'm ready to feast!

Don’t judge on the streaky, a treat should be a treat, not a sensible back bacon half treat.

I think wearing foundation every day for 38 years is probably a vicious circle.

The makeup eventually fucks your skin, so you don't want to leave the house without covering it up.

How does make up ‘fuck’ your skin? It really doesn’t

Itiswhysofew · 11/01/2026 12:30

No, never!

I’ve just had a browse on Google and there are some PJs for £1,600. I think I’d be going to work in those 😁

I’ve never worn foundation. I haven’t worn any make up of any kind for over a decade. Not sure what that’s got to do with my self respect and standards though.
Edit: just processed ‘showering my bottom half’. What? How? Why? Just have a proper shower!

Edited

Me too. I haven’t worn make up for about ten years now.

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 12:28

HangryBrickShark · 11/01/2026 12:24

Ew its gross. Since 1987 I've never set foot out of the door without foundation and eyeliner and I'd not dream of going anywhere without showering my lower half and getting changed out of nightwear.

I despair of what this country is becoming and the lack of standards and self respect that some folks have. Sorry not trying to be mean.

Crumbs! I probably haven't worn eyeliner and foundation since 1987!
