Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

Leaving the house is what kills the cosy vibe. Either stay in the warm and forgo the cooked breakfast or get dressed, get the bits you need and accept you're choosing not to stay cosy at home

Last Sunday a grown man in some kind of cartoon character pj's with his 2 children also dressed in there PJ's and hoodie where in a supermarket in the local town. My first thoughts were nooooo this is not a good thing to be doing it just looks so un hygienic and lazy to me.

JEANS?!!!?! 😭😭😭

Yep they take a minute to put on.

Lollylavender · 11/01/2026 13:02

How can a pyjama be warm enough to go outside?

Just pull on some jeans and a hoody, even over your pjs, and head out..?

Morecoffeethanks · 11/01/2026 13:01

Can you not just have eggs in the fridge in advance and some frozen bacon?
I live in France we’re a trip to carrefour city requires proper clothes. I was shocked people don’t go about their daily lives wearing ath-leisure wear. No school run mums in leggings here and certainly no supermarket shopping in leggings or joggers.

Giftmarse · 11/01/2026 13:00

Would you wear your slippers? I've just seen a woman wandering along outside Sainsburys in fluffy pj's, dressing gown and slippers. I couldn't help thinking that wearing slippers outside to pick up goodness knows what on the soles rather defeats the point of having them.

I've never done it (I'm a "the second I'm out of bed in getting dressed" person, not sure why) but I always envy people in pyjamas in the supermarket. They look comfy and clearly live their lives free of concerns of what the Middle Aged Mumsnet Mafia think of them. I aspire to that.

I don't think "aspire" is the word you're looking for here-"descend" might be better.

hohahagogo · 11/01/2026 12:56

i’m wearing jogging bottoms, still cosy but street acceptable (also will wear all day as a bonus). Top tip to op and others, always pick up your bacon at 9.55pm just before coop closes, there’s usually a queue at ours, helpfully right next door to the pub.

KarenWheeler · 11/01/2026 12:55

I live in my pjs, literally! I WFH so I never get dressed unless I'm leaving the house, shower and clean pjs on is my daily routine. But, going to the supermarket, even the corner shop in your pjs is just nasty.

It takes 30 seconds to throw your jeans on! You can always put your pjs back on when you get back. That's what I do. Most of the time I don't even put a bra on, just throw a baggy hoodie over my pj top.

@BoxingHare I suppose when all is said and done the only question that remains to be answered is:

Did you enjoy the breakfast?

PoachedSmoke · 11/01/2026 12:53

In my youth (lol) I worked at a local co-op in a student residential area. Often students would come in wearing pajamas and one guy used to come in on Saturday morning in his jim jams, dressing gown and slippers! Obviously ludicrous but it did make me chuckle.

(Personally I'd never go into a shop without being fully dressed and presentable).

BeMintFatball · 11/01/2026 12:52

Of If I saw someome in a shop in pyjamas I
would assume they were mentally unwell. Lack of self care is a red flag 🚩. And I speak as someone caring for
someone with severely poor mental health. I would find it triggering. Go get dressed ffs

You couldn't get a sentence like this out of me under torture. Do actual adults think/say stuff like this?

Not seriously, I don't think!

Ypu are wrong. Streaky bacon is rubbish. Back bacon is the proper treat.

Agree. Back bacon is better

Just nooooo - it will make many people think you’re a lazy slob (I would) and you’re bound to run into someone who you don’t want to see in your jim-jams 🤣

This is true!

It isn't two hours where I am (England). I don't know anywhere that it is just two hours anymore.

It ranges between 1 and 2.5 hours here depending on the supermarket, but the .5 hour is only for browsing.

Yes but you're comfort is completely lost, and the whole cosy feel of Sunday has changed to day wear mode.

“Back in my day” we never valued comfort over being properly dressed.

You are alive, posting on Mumsnet. This is your day.

Foundation every day for 38 years certainly would.

What Sunday laws in Scotland? Ive lived here all my life..you cant buy booze (in shops) before 10am or after 10pm on any day but other than that??
Also, in my town no-one dresses to shop local...but we've all got massive coats on so its (not) a secret.

I'm old enough to remember when you couldn't buy booze at all on a Sunday (apart from the local video shop/offie where if the owner knew you he would sell it to you under the counter). Then they changed it so you could buy it after 12 noon (once you'd been to Kirk).

Then for a brief window of maybe 2-3 years you could buy booze 24/7. Very handy because I used to do my shopping before work, just because I'm buying booze at 8am doesn't mean I'm about to drink it right away.

Then the SNP got in with their nanny state policies. So, even in the run up to Christmas, much as I'd like to get in and out of the shops before 10am, if I'm planning on buying alcohol for visitors, I have to wait till the shops are rammed.

Fuckers!

Oh, I’m sure it’s better than the supermarket stuff. But the same applies to back bacon purchased in those establishments, so the quality differential remains.

I'm beginning to think I should have showered, washed my hair, put on a completely new outfit, polished my shoes, valeted my car, and gone to the local farm shop instead.
