Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

Why do you care what a bunch of randoms think? You are never going to meet these people again in your life so why place value on their opinion? So long as you are decently covered and the pjs are not skimpy or see through I can see no problem. Just throw on a long coat and the chances are no one will even notice.

One time I opened the door to a courier wearing a kaftan which is my usual leasure wear, He grinned and said "Sorry I got you out of bed" "This is a kaftan not a nightie. Ive been up since 8am sonny" I told him in a terse voice. He looked very sheepish.

Just get organised and stop being lazy!

ruethewhirl · 11/01/2026 13:14

Meant to say, though - OP, Deliveroo's your friend here (or Whoosh or Uber Eats, as pps have mentioned), unless you live in a far-flung corner of the Outer Hebrides or something (in which case I'd argue that PJs at the shops would be a lot less important 😃)

molifly · 11/01/2026 13:12

Why are grown adults still in their pyjamas unless Ill at 11.30am? Odd

user2848502016 · 11/01/2026 13:11

How hard is it to change to proper trousers at least and chuck a coat over your pyjama top?!
(I did this many times when I had a newborn and DD to get to preschool!)

HangryBrickShark · 11/01/2026 12:24

Ew its gross. Since 1987 I've never set foot out of the door without foundation and eyeliner and I'd not dream of going anywhere without showering my lower half and getting changed out of nightwear.

I despair of what this country is becoming and the lack of standards and self respect that some folks have. Sorry not trying to be mean.

Edited

Just your lower half and not your upper half? So you're leaving the house with a full face of makeup and sweaty pits?

(Not meaning to be goady, I'm sure that's not the case but it was what jumped out at me...)

shellyleppard · 11/01/2026 13:11

Either get dressed or get it delivered?? Can still stay in PJ's then 🙃 don't ask me how I know Lol

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 13:09

JetFlight · 11/01/2026 13:07

Surely you lose that cosy comfortable feeling as soon as you step outside the house into the fresh air, see people, cars and buildings.
Your pj bottoms cannot fight this.

Amazing though they are, I think even my jammie bottoms are not that powerful.

Nope. If it's unacceptable the rest of the time, it is unacceptable when you want to do it .

I never go out in public without showering (which I do every morning) and dressing appropriately.

It's lazy as feck to go out in night clothes.

Do you have dogs? I know it's not relevant to the thread, but I'm just curious as a couple of dog owning friends of mine say their dogs need to be walked so early that they just get out of bed, fling on sweats, brush their teeth/hair and leave the shower/getting dressed 'properly' till they get back. Don't know how widespread this is among dog owners, but I have to say I'd do the same if I had a dog. Let the walk wake me up and then I'd feel up to tackling the shower.

OP, personally I think it's fine to do the above for a quick supermarket run though, especially if you're just talking about the corner shop or somewhere like Sainsbury's Local.

Two minutes is actually quite long - easy to pull over a hoody and jeans and grab a coat!

Edited

If you're putting them on top of the PJs then, yes, maybe.
In the winter, just putting my big winter shoes takes at least 2 minutes, the ones I need with snow and ice.

I went out yesterday and I'm sure it was 10 minutes to gather all the different layers I needed and put them on.

Jeschara · 11/01/2026 13:07

I am no pearl clutcher, but just no. Its absolutly slovenly.

ThejoyofNC · 11/01/2026 13:07

I love how now leggings are slovenly too 🤣

@BoxingHare I suppose when all is said and done the only question that remains to be answered is:

Did you enjoy the breakfast?

Edited

It's nearly ready, just waiting for the bacon to crisp! 😋

Two things : Does the two hour rule in Scotland mean you can only buy alcohol for two hours on a Sunday . And I did laugh at one poster saying you can browse though.

Why very rarely see a man in pjs and dressing gown ? Is it because they dont own them?

And I have been guilty of knee high boots and long coat on a few occasions.

5128gap · 11/01/2026 13:06

I think it would be easier if people just bought more comfortable clothes. Office and occasion wear excepted, why do so many people seem to have wardrobes of clothes so uncomfortable they can't wait to put on their PJs, or insufficiently relaxed or 'cosy' for a Sunday?

user38 · 11/01/2026 13:05

It’s grim. I absolutely one hundred percent judge people who do this. It’s just attention seeking and lazy.

Lollylavender · 11/01/2026 13:04

Gwenhwyfar · 11/01/2026 13:03

Not in cold weather it doesn't!

Can you not just have eggs in the fridge in advance and some frozen bacon?
I live in France we’re a trip to carrefour city requires proper clothes. I was shocked people don’t go about their daily lives wearing ath-leisure wear. No school run mums in leggings here and certainly no supermarket shopping in leggings or joggers.

Eggs in the fridge?!?!?!?!?!

Of If I saw someome in a shop in pyjamas I
would assume they were mentally unwell. Lack of self care is a red flag 🚩. And I speak as someone caring for
someone with severely poor mental health. I would find it triggering. Go get dressed ffs

You need to broader your world a little bit lol.

Would you wear your slippers? I've just seen a woman wandering along outside Sainsburys in fluffy pj's, dressing gown and slippers. I couldn't help thinking that wearing slippers outside to pick up goodness knows what on the soles rather defeats the point of having them.

That’s disgusting and defeats the point of having bed clothes and home slippers!

Imagine stepping in dog poo or wee with your fluffy house slippers 🤢🤮

I love Scotland's trading laws, no ridiculous "fuck it's 1 minute past 4" feeling.

But I would argue 7am Sunday is absolutely the time to have socially acceptable jimjams!

It’s never acceptable.

PhantomAfternoonTea · 11/01/2026 11:33

Just put on some leggings and a hoodie - still loungewear but socially acceptable to be seen out in.

This is what I'd do. Since lockdown I virtually live in leggings and hoodies as I wfh.
