The more tenuous the better.

I don’t want any of your “My mum used to clean for a famous pop star” because that turns into pages of tiresome questions and “Oh go on tell us who it is/give us a clue/no I can’t sorry”

I want such tenuous connections that nobody will bother asking follow up questions.

I’ll start.

My dog was Mr Tumble’s dog’s mum.

I wonder if it was the same Waitrose where I worked, which she and Richard Madely were both regulars at….

I never saw Richard Madeley and now feel terribly hard done by!

Oh and my mother in law is friends with David Suchet and his wife (they are both lovely people apparently - I have not met them).

And on a train to a uni interview years and years ago I met an elderly man who claimed to be a good friend of John Benjamin (I was reading his poetry on the train). For all I know he was making it up though!

And I met quite a few politicians (old school ones) - Harold Wilson, Cecil Parkinson, Alan Clark, Geoffrey Howe when I worked in what was our city’s most fancy hotel at the time. This was in the 1990s and I was the duty manager and was responsible for greeting them.

And a close friend of mine used to be a nurse in Buckingham Palace (she never saw the Queen but did see some minor royals).

One of my husband's childhood friends is a former commissioner of the revenue authority of a country in Africa, and another of his childhood friends is that country's ambassador to one of the South American countries. He has several other childhood friends in similar levels of authority and has been investigated as part of people's background checks which is creepy as fuck! A few of his friends have armed guards at all times which is terrifying to be around he says.

My husband used to work at a speciaist nursing home where several of the residents were the parents of extremely famous people.

Richard Osman was in the year below me at secondary school. I was entirely unaware of his existence at the time!

To be fair Richard Osman probably wasnt aware of his existence back then either 🤣🤣🤣

Back in the olden days when ‘Mastermind’ was presented by Magnus Magnusson and had a studio audience, I was sat in the front row behind the contestants and so had a few glorious moments of screen time.

Stings brother was my milkman when I was a child and my parents almost bought the house that sting grew up in.
also my sister bumped into Jude Law in the supermarket once!
clearly we are a family that rubs shoulders with the stars! 🌟

My Dad was also a milkman. We lived in a famous seaside town where famous people were doing shows for the holiday season. Some would rent houses for the duration of their stay. On my Dads round was the late, great Hattie Jacques who, my dad says, was absolutely charming and gave him a large tip with her last milk bill before she left 🥰

I briefly appeared on tv as part of crowd in the first ever World Hockey Tournament at Meadowbank stadium. Think it was '75.

My husband was brought up on and around Balmoral Estate, so I've danced with a man who danced with the Princess Royal (at the Ghillies' Ball).

My cousins husbands supplies the meat for the Balmoral estate.

My father is a few years older than Jools Holland and grew up in the same area of London and remembers him tagging along with him and his mates (he might have been one of the mates younger brother or younger cousin).

My brother’s godmother’s mother used to live next door to James Mason’s mother - is that tenuous enough?

SO JEALOUS!

I auditioned. We didn't get through as my friend was a creative type who kept answering all the questions incorrectly, and too quickly for the others of us to correct her.

Knightmare is a core memory for those of us of a certain age. I was in (low level) competitive swimming as a kid and right after Knightmare ended I used to have to get ready for this session I didn't like because the trainer refused to learn my name. She called me "girl on the end" for 2 years straight. A while ago I heard the Knightmare themesong on YouTube and my brain reflexively went "not this bitch"

I was once stuck in a lift with one of the v. famous cast members from the Eternals for over an hour and we did not exchange a single word.

I also once nearly reversed my car over Ronnie Corbet in Waitrose car park because I didn't see him.

Oh yes! My only other claim to fame - long long time ago I came very close to reversing into Sebastian Coe in a Loughborough University car park.

My husband had a wee next to Roman Abramovich.

I kissed Brian May (Astrophysicist/guitar player/badger botherer).

I'm related to the first person ever killed by a motor vehicle.

Toooldforlonghair · 11/01/2026 11:53

My Dad the same tailor as Bobby Moore. He never met him but my Dad loved to tell people this.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 11/01/2026 11:49

A few years ago, just before Christmas, my DH went to collect a print of a painting I loved by a Dorset artist from the artist's house. He got lost trying to find the place so arrived 5 mins late. Artist said "ah, you've just missed Dawn French", who'd just been to pick up the same print for Jennifer Saunders' Christmas pressie.

In a Central London pub my DH once asked Boris Johnson, who he absolutely loathes, if he wanted a game of pool. Boris Johnson said no.

I served Vanessa Feltz at Waitrose when I was 16. I only realised when I saw her name on her debit card.

I wonder if it was the same Waitrose where I worked, which she and Richard Madely were both regulars at….

I was stood next to tilda Swinton in the queue for an Elton John gig in Glasgow. She was being mobbed by people chatting to her so I just left her to it. She’s every bit as ethereal in real life!

I stood behind Montell the gladiator who did Strictly at Kinky boots as i was trying to get to the toilet not quite the same 😀

tenrillingtonplace · 11/01/2026 11:45

Long time ago, an ancestor lived at 10 Rillington Place. Before all the nasty stuff.

I live in an area of north london where many celebrities live… my kids have gone to school /are going to school with kids of celebs or see celebs in the streets/next door.
oh look! It’s ava’s dad in the movie! Oh look it’s bill’s mum in traitors! I took the bus with the guy from Topboy this morning! I had a chat with michael rosen this morning as i bumped into him on my way to Sainsbury’s…

the funniest is one of my DC goes to school with the son of the lady who does the voice over for mummy pig in peppa pig.

My teens are totally nonplussed that we live one street away to one of the gallaghers brothers…. They roll their eyes at the mention of oasis…
