Would just get on with it?

Ok ask the name and occupation of the contestant. That’s all I care to hear thanks.

I don’t care what they’d spend the money on.
I don’t care if they’ve got a funny story about a bucket. It won’t be funny.
I don’t care what their hobbies are.

Just get on with the quiz/game.

I don't know why the producers think we want all the waffle. It's like when Strictly Come Dancing stopped having as much of the rehearsals footage before each dance and it became daft pranks on each other or going to meet the families of the competitors. It's a dance competition, I watched for the dancing and enjoyed seeing them rehearse. I stopped watching years ago.

For the quizzes if a quiz has three rounds with 6 questions in each there is a basic time. But the team may take different lengths of time to answer the questions. On some the questions can be passed across for a bonus point. Could be very short eound if you have a really good team and then need the filler or one with lots of questions repeated using up the spare time.

RaraRachael · 11/01/2026 12:55

University Challenge is the only quiz we watch although I find Amol quite annoying when he repeats an answer with "Yes, .........." with a minuscule difference in pronunciation.

dottiedodah · 11/01/2026 10:54

I think that the new format of WWTBAM is quite good now.Although it takes a bit of getting used to! The chit chat is limited as a shorter show. I too dislike all the chat on Pointless and prefer to join after the first round too

ElegantFowl · 11/01/2026 10:44

We watch them on catch up and skip through all the introductory waffle. I can’t bear it either.

This is why University Challenge reigns supreme. No chitchat at all after Amol has welcomed the players and run through the rules. Marvellous.

I don't watch Mastermind, but my Mum does, so I see it sometimes. I see that's been ruined too by having the winner rabbit on for the final minute or too. Not interested! Put in another couple of questions instead.

Good call. University Challenge is probably the only quiz left that doesn't waste time with inane chit chat.

Anonimiss · 11/01/2026 10:40

It drives me bonkers, I couldn’t give a shiney shit what Dave from Manchester does for a living, how many kids he’s got and what his hobbies are!
But then I hate small talk anyway. I can’t bear the inane Monday morning chit chat at work “hello Anon, how was your weekend, what did you get up to? Bla bla bla….”
I just answer “not much” and never reciprocate the question🤣

LLJETO · 11/01/2026 10:36

Jumpingthruhoops · 10/01/2026 21:46

Agree. The chit chat on that is great because Lee Mack is actually funny.

I think the complete opposite. I cringe when Lee Mack tries to be funny; it’s awful. I so wish we could fast forward.

I've gone off House of Games. The quiz itself is enjoyable, but Richard Osman's droney voice 😱

Don’t get me started on Richard and house of games! Love the quiz itself so I do continue to watch but he’s infuriating.
If someone is consistently winning (due to being the best at answering the questions!) then he will start talking about how “we” need to stop them and unfairly disadvantage the winning person by either giving them far less time than the others or randomly handing out extra points or giving clues to the others. Very occasionally contestants call him out on it (Sara pascoe comes to mind) and he really doesn’t like it.
He also is like a little kid putting his hand up at school when no one knows the answer and wants to let everyone know that he knew the answer. I could go on but he’s just so annoying.

It annoys me on The Chase.

"Hi, I'm Fred , a retired teacher from London "
Then they take their turn at the cashbuilder and Bradley Walshs first question is
"Hi, what's your name? Where are you from? And what job do you do?".
Contestant then repeats what they said to camera 2 minutes ago.
Then "funny" comment from Bradley Walsh.

YES!!!
And l love the Chase but this annoys me too.

I'd love to apply for the one percent club but I have zero funny stories to tell.

Just make up a hilarious quirky thing you want to spend the 100k on. Easy.

Just like most of the people who do go on it, then!

I hate it too and also when contestants give endless explanations of why they chose/didn't choose an answer. On that new Millionaire thing they had 15 seconds to answer but went through such a palaver that Clarkson had to tell them to hurry up!

Just answer the bloody question!

This has been annoying me too! Seems relatively new, assuming they are being told to explain their reasoning. Most of the time they are just guessing.

HisNotHes · 11/01/2026 10:19

Gahr · 11/01/2026 10:18

Totally agree. It drives me nuts on Pointless, especially during the first round. I don't care about whether Stephen from Slough likes playing the didgeridoo in his boxers on a Tuesday evening. Just get on with the round!

The 30seconds skip button is perfect for pointless and the small talk before each round!

HisNotHes · 11/01/2026 10:18

Totally agree. I hate small talk and seeing others doing it is cringe. I care not about the contestants’ lives. Most of the time you can tell the hosts don’t care either.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 11/01/2026 10:17

I had to stop watching The 1% Club because it was more filler than quiz. And because whenever Lee asks someone what they do for a living ("I'm an accountant") he immediately replies "Are you?" Every freaking time.

OriginalUsername2 · 11/01/2026 10:16

StabbyCat · 10/01/2026 22:45

Bradley Walsh knows where the bodies are buried.

Remember when he pretended to cry with laughter when one of the answer options was “Fanny Schmelar” (sp). So so fake.

I can’t stand him, mostly because of that clip. It might be that funny if you’re 12 years old, but come on..

looselegs · 11/01/2026 10:16

StabbyCat · 10/01/2026 22:42

Correct 😀

Lee Mack is funny on WILTY but he’s painfully unfunny on 1% Club. Or at least no funnier than any other presenter.

He's not funny at all. I record 1% club and get it down to around 20 minutes because I can't stand the wittering

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 11/01/2026 10:12

You may as well replace Bradley Walsh with a robot. He just cannot get off script. Every line is identical , every show. The only ad libs come from the chasers. Well past its sell by date.

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 10/01/2026 22:48

It's a comedy show not a quiz ...

I know, I’m such a banana for not reading the title “Big Fat Comedy Show of the Year” properly.

StabbyCat · 10/01/2026 23:55

5foot5 · 10/01/2026 23:03

I think it is painfully obvious that every contestant on 1% club has been asked to prepare a funny story about themselves in case they are asked. Lee Mack is presumably told who to chat to next. TBF to him he often does manage to spin it and make the material funnier than it would otherwise be.

Yes. Of course they’re told to have a funny story. And Lee will know what it is and have time to prepare his responses. So why aren’t his responses funnier.

I've actually been on Eggheads and they literally want you to do that. When we did the auditions, the people that didn't get through were the ones who just gave an answer and didn't explain it.

On my go on the show, me and Egghead Dave were level pegging after the multiple choice (we got 2 out of 3 right each) and so we went to sudden death. Both of us then answered 3 sudden death questions correct each and then on the 4th one, he got his right and I got mine wrong. So we had 7 questions each in total.

However when it came to airing the show, all they aired was our 3 multiple choice questions, 1 of the sudden death ones we got right each and then the final question each. But they filled the show with what you call the waffle. I just think it is what they want!

This is really interesting! Thank you for explaining. And what a great experience - well done.
