Told to cover up

I was in a cafe earlier breastfeeding my 4 month old. A lady sat down next to me and struck up conversation, she then proceeded to state that I could ‘buy a cover up for breastfeeding’, that she could ‘see my nipple’ and that I had ‘everything on show’.

This was not the case. I was very discreet, wearing a vest under my jumper and a jumper on top covering my breast. She couldn’t see my nipple unless she put her head right next to my breast…
I couldn’t believe that she effectively went out of her way to say this to me and be rather nasty.

It’s the first time someone has said this to me. I told her that I’m not interested in what she has to say, but I was actually upset. I know I shouldn’t care, but breastfeeding is hard work and I’m proud of it, and now I feel embarrassed and paranoid.

Why are people like this?

I think her reaction is pretty uncommon OP, don't let it throw you off. I breastfed everywhere and only ever encountered friendly smiles.

Why on earth do 17% of posters think you are being unreasonable for feeding your baby? Confused
What does it say about them?

Surely, when a baby is feeding there is nothing "offensive" to see anyway?

If I had been sat near you I would have told her to mind her own business.

ElegantFowl · 10/01/2026 19:12

I’d have given her a beaming smile and told to her stop looking if it bothered her.

Overtheatlantic · 10/01/2026 19:11

I would have told her loudly to stop being a pervert.

BMW6 · 10/01/2026 19:10

I'd have told her to bugger off to another table then so she won't have to Stare at your nipped!

Weirs cow.

Littlejellyuk · 10/01/2026 19:09

She is the first, but she certainly won't be the last. She is a a busybody bellend.
There will be more out there.
Tell them to get a life.

Buy a cover, and then if anyone asks in future, stick it over their head.

If I was so offended by the sight of breastfeeding I would simply look away, or move table, or go somewhere else, I definitely wouldn't get closer and strike up a conversation with someone who was offending me so much.

Some people are just aresholes, don't feel embarrassed or paranoid, 99% of people probably wouldn't even notice, let alone be upset.

Comtesse · 10/01/2026 19:07

Tell her to mind her own business and do what you need to do. She’s the weirdo, ignore her.

SoOriginal · 10/01/2026 19:07

I breastfeed in public and I would have very calmly told her to stop looking and mind her own business! You can’t control idiots, you can only control how you engage with them.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/01/2026 19:03

Weirdo. Best to avoid them.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 10/01/2026 19:00

Dunno, some people just are.

Best not to pay them any mind otherwise none of us would ever do anything.
