Told to cover up

I was in a cafe earlier breastfeeding my 4 month old. A lady sat down next to me and struck up conversation, she then proceeded to state that I could ‘buy a cover up for breastfeeding’, that she could ‘see my nipple’ and that I had ‘everything on show’.

This was not the case. I was very discreet, wearing a vest under my jumper and a jumper on top covering my breast. She couldn’t see my nipple unless she put her head right next to my breast…
I couldn’t believe that she effectively went out of her way to say this to me and be rather nasty.

It’s the first time someone has said this to me. I told her that I’m not interested in what she has to say, but I was actually upset. I know I shouldn’t care, but breastfeeding is hard work and I’m proud of it, and now I feel embarrassed and paranoid.

Why are people like this?

Some people get a lot of pleasure out of acting like complete wankers.

I’ve had a few shitty comments in my time for bottle feeding in public. You can’t win.

Couldyounot · 10/01/2026 20:26

"Stop staring at my tits, you fucking freak"

That would probably do the job in future

I think her reaction is pretty uncommon OP, don't let it throw you off. I breastfed everywhere and only ever encountered friendly smiles.

I didn't. I got a telling off from a women in A&E for breastfeeding my poorly baby who hasn't fed all day. I was distracting her teen sons apparently.

You'll get them OP. Have a reply ready if it happens again. Like 'dont look at my tits then'

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 10/01/2026 20:19

I have to say that I fed all five of mine for a year each, in public places, in parks, in the car, all over the place, and I had not ONE single derogatory comment. And my youngest is nearly 30.

So I don't think the 'cover up' attitude is particularly widespread. Just the odd weirdo, here and there.

Thoseslippers · 10/01/2026 20:14

You should have told the cafe staff. It's against the law to harrass breastfeeding women and that woman should have been asked to leave the cafe.
I breastfed all 3 of mine without a cover wherever they needed feeding.
I once fed my daughter in the queue at M&S just stood up with her in one arm and my boob out abd my shopping basket in the other hand
I am too tired and old for any nonsense. I'd honestly throw hands with anyone who challenged me but no one in all those years so much as raised an eyebrow tbf

Bizarrely, the only time I ever had an issue was on a children’s ward when my baby (aged about 4 weeks) was in for monitoring. I’d not even thought about it, but of all people a nurse informed me that I was offending the dad opposite. I laughed and continued!

I’d have been tempted to squirt milk at him. Twat.

And I can’t believe the nurse said something to you!

nutbrownhare15 · 10/01/2026 20:12

She's a weirdo. I breastfed in public a lot and never got comments or attitude. Hoping it's the same for you from now on.

tumbletoast · 10/01/2026 20:10

Did she actually tell you to cover up or just let you know that you can buy cover-ups?

Wherestheteenguide · 10/01/2026 20:10

I often thought that a good response would be to hand over baby and say, fine you feed it then ! But that would involve not caring about handing my child over to a stranger!

ShesTheAlbatross · 10/01/2026 20:10

I breastfed both of mine and never had any comments from anyone. Hopefully she’s the only idiot you’ll encounter OP.

PiggyPlumPie · 10/01/2026 20:07

I got "told off" by my daughter's 7 year old friend for feeding DD2 in a school assembly! "Tell your Mum not to do that because it's disgusting!"

CherrieTomaties · 10/01/2026 19:47

You have nothing to feel paranoid or embarrassed about.

Breastfeeding your baby is one of the most natural
things in the world. The reason we women have breasts is so we can feed our babies.

I hate how breasts are so sexualised in society. I think that’s the reason why some people are uncomfortable by seeing women breastfeed. They’ve been conditioned to think that breasts are for sexual purposes and therefor should be “covered up”.

GameofPhones · 10/01/2026 19:43

Unfortunately there are plenty of bullies around looking for victims. Anything unusual they will pounce on. I used to get it a lot as a teenager, just for being - well, young and perhaps looked a bit naive and vulnerable.

How can you know that? I bf for about 5 years in total and received no negative comments

I had the best one. Sat next to a teenage girl on a school trip on a flight. BFing DD. Her mates come up and say “yuk” quietly to her. Proper Saaf Laandon sister says, “SHE’S FEEDING HER BABY!” And gives them the biggest eye roll I’ve ever seen.

She’s probably 30 day and maybe with babies of her own. If she’s on here, I salute you lovely!

Teainthekitchen · 10/01/2026 19:36

I think I would go straight to telling her to F* off. Absolutely bizarre that she expects you to feel shame over feeding your baby.

mondaytosunday · 10/01/2026 19:34

Yea I’m glad to say I only had positive comments when breastfeeding in public. I think most people wouldn’t even notice I was doing it if they weren’t sitting very close by. The best comment was an older gent who came up and said how delighted he was that I was breastfeeding in public, that his wife never could.
It is even more disappointing that a woman said this to you.

Mistletoeiggi · 10/01/2026 19:33

Littlejellyuk · 10/01/2026 19:09

She is the first, but she certainly won't be the last. She is a a busybody bellend.
There will be more out there.
Tell them to get a life.

ZippyPeer · 10/01/2026 19:30

She's the weird one and can fuck right off!

Try not to give her the power to mess with your head (I know it can be hard)

FunnyOrca · 10/01/2026 19:30

ZenithAndQuasar · 10/01/2026 19:20

Both of mine wouldn't latch on so I exclusively pumped with both of them. Was fortunate enough to have a good supply so it didn't take long.
Anyway, I once pumped (as discreetly as I could) underneath the wing of a Spitfire plane at IWM Duxford 😅
I got some very strange looks, I can tell you 😅

Got nob all to do with anyone else; you carry on feeding your baby how and where they need you to. If anyone has a problem with it, they can piss off. ❤️👌

Amazing! 🤣

Yes, OP don’t let her get to you. She’s a weirdo! I find everyone in public either very friendly about breastfeeding or they keep their distance.

Youngeryoungsuddenly · 10/01/2026 19:28

She’s a fucking idiot OP. You are amazing and giving your baby the very best start in the world.

TheMorgenmuffel · 10/01/2026 19:26

Ah some people are just twats. Don't let it get to you. Next time someone says something, squirt them in the eye.

(Shouldn't really have to clarify that's a joke but this is the Internet so 🤷‍♀️)

chickencaesersalad · 10/01/2026 19:23

Please don’t let this discourage you! You’re doing an amazing thing and shouldn’t be made to feel embarrassed. I’m so sorry that happened to you. I was once bf’ing my little one in a cafe sat with a group of mum friends. He must have been a similar age at the time. The owner (middle aged male) came out to take our order and said oh wow, this one has her tits out! I was absolutely mortified. I was wrapped up as it was also winter .. so I have no idea what he was on-about but it made me feel so uncomfortable and embarrassed. There are some arseholes out there but please don’t let them get to you!

We are still going strong 18m down the line and I wouldn’t have it any other way ❤️ Keep doing you

Dryshampoofordays · 10/01/2026 19:19

You’re doing amazing and she was completely out of order. If I’d have overheard I’d of told her to piss off and leave you alone! Keep feeding your beautiful baby whenever you need to, it’s incredible. I never had a negative comment and breastfed two babies so there’s every chance it was a shit one off. I hope you don’t have to deal with anything like that again.
