AIBU to be anxious about the situation with Greenland?

Just that really.

A few years ago I wouldn't have even considered the concept of America trying to forcefully take a territory which is part of a friendly, peaceful country and fellow Nato member. Now though Trump seems so mad I'm worried it could actually happen.

Surely if it did happen America would be expelled from Nato and ourselves (UK) and other Nato countries would have defend Greenland from a US invasion, and a major international conflict would be triggered.

I can't work out anymore if I'm just being alarmist and have watched too much news, or if this is an actual possibility we should all be worried about.

YABU - This is never going to happen in reality. The news is just scare-mongering.

YANBU - Trump is mad enough to actually attempt this and risk major international conflict.

I think NATO would fall apart and Starmer would try to keep his/our nose clean.

We can always reinstate them when the lunatics are no longer in charge.

I don't suppose it would be our decision, if as the op suggests we kick the US out of our country and close their bases. It's like Brexit, we want out of that club, we don't get to decide we want back in again when it suits us.

thats the whole purpose of diplomacy. It's getting a win-win, it's sometimes having to hold our noses and do unmentionable things like invite Trump and his entourage to meet our monarchy. We don't do any of that because we enjoy it. It's part of having to operate on a global stage, tiptoeing round uncomfortable truths in the interest of our safety and security,

For the UK that would be cutting off our nose to spite our face.

the military bases in situ in this country are highly symbolic of the longstanding partnership between UK and US, which predates Trump by generations and will exist after he has popped his clogs.

the bases with US presence offer us security and protection as well as providing US with strategic advantage. It would do more harm than good to send them packing.

We can always reinstate them when the lunatics are no longer in charge.

I truly believe we are headed for WW3.
Trump will go for Greenland. NATO is destroyed. Willing European countries come to Greenland’s defence. Meanwhile, Putin takes more of Europe while European attention and resource is divided. Trump does absolutely nothing to defend Europe.
China sits back watching the destruction, biding their time to pick whatever they want at the end.

Edited

We Are not unless Putin acts. Don’t worry, and Putin won’t act, as everyone will act back and Russia will fail to exist seconds later, that’s why it’s called a nuclear detterant. The nato countries are just about politics, that’s all.

TheDoubleDeuce · 10/01/2026 17:08

@ I respectfully disagree. Although he doesn't have the best 'stage prescents' is terrible and his statements are often very ill thought out. I think a lot of his policies are refreshing and make sense. He realizes with the Putin situation a bit of deplomacy and ego stroking can go a long way to prevent the situation for going nuclear,. literally!

Empress13 · 10/01/2026 17:07

What’s the point of worrying if you can’t do anything about it that’s my view you can’t change it

InterestedDad37 · 10/01/2026 17:00

He is absolutely mad enough, and it won't end well. However, I have some hope that he will be assassinated (yes, I really do hope that) or end up in prison (ideally in Mexico, Canada, Greenland or Denmark)

He will do it. European Countries then need to expel all American military and close their sites, and chuck them out of our UK GCHQ too. And then minimise all trade with them. It will be painful but worth it.

None of that is a full scale war. It's just political posturing at the moment, and your outcome is less cooperation with the US in Europe. That's not something that needs to keep the OP awake worrying.

If the US wasn't currently under the absolute dictatorship of Trump that might be the normal run of things.

Political posturing responses are moving moving further and further away as legitimate responses to dealing with Trump as President.

Just as Biden chose not to.

I actually find Trump hilarious, he’s a walking meme. You couldn’t make it up- it’s insane, the whole situation.
Of course it’s about the oil.
He’s 80, try not to worry OP there’s nothing us minions can do about it.

I actually think JD Vance is more dangerous than Trump.

Of Course he would. Reality is Europe hasn't invested in military as they should and would not be able to protect itself without the US.

🤣You think you can rely on Trump.

The world is a completely different place to that of 1947 when we had a common set of values: a commitment to defend democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

The days of being able to trust and rely on USA have gone. Staggered anybody would actually still be so naive to think Trump USA/ post Trump USA is a country to rely on now.

The US National Security Strategy (NSS), published in December, signals that, for the White House, the above shared endeavour has ended; that much of what the world has taken for granted about America's role is over.

You're kidding, right? Europe cannot protect itself. Do you think Ukraine would be standing up to Russia so well without US money, weapons and expertise?

US support for Ukraine began almost four years ago. Trump has spent the past year trying to cancel and wind down as much of that as he possibly can. Ukraine had, thankfully, dealt with most of Russia's ability to actually progress that invasion before Trump took office for his 2nd term.

Bluebellsandvalentines · 10/01/2026 16:49

NATO would instantly dissolve if he invaded Greenland.
We would see plenty of stony faced photos of Macron and Starmer etc. statements of condemnation but then appeals for calm and ultimately it would be a case of the former NATO members deciding not to enter into conflict etc etc that they are working to prevent ww3.

Basically Trump will get away with it unfortunately.

I think it's absolutely possible and I think it will most likely be done with an agreement with Greenland. If Russia and or China kick off it's going to fall to US help protect Europe so makes sense for Trump to them in the strongest position possible.

There are over 40 European countries all relying on Trump to get us out of trouble if war erupts. Don't you want America to be stronger to deal with that?

Of course not! Why would anyone want the warmonger who's openly threatening war against their allies with no regard for international war, world peace or the obligations of our alliance to become more powerful?

Why would any nato member believe the USA would come to their aid? They are proven to be happy to ignore the terms of the alliance.

The reality is, until there is a change in leadership, that Europe will have to consider how to make ourselves safe with the more trustworthy allies we have.

Um he’s not exactly being a lot of help with Ukraine is he? If Putin decided to be hostile to anybody else in Europe Trump would do the same- sfa. They’re best buds and scratching each others backs.

We need to ditch Brexit and get closer to Europe- pronto!
