If Trump offered you £1 million to vote for your country to become part of US, would you?

This is hypothetically one of the options available to Greenlanders.

We're Scottish. I say no, DH says take the money and move.

No. Imagine how you would be treated if they bought you.

Anyway, if everyone had a million quid, houses would probably cost 2 million very soon, and rent would be 10K per month.

Nah, no, nope.

(1) Trump wouldn't pay up - he has form for failing to pay.

(2) Whatever deal he makes will be shit for Greenlanders; plus he'll make it even shittier further down the line because Trump is incapable of understanding the concept of a win-win. If the other side thinks they've got a good deal, then Trump thinks he's lost or not got enough.

(3) I've had 2 different types of cancer so I wouldn't be getting affordable health insurance, and £1 mill ain't gonna go very far in the US for-profit health industry if/when it comes back

(4) £1 mill isn't enough to make up for loss of rights, country, culture, identity, language, community, home, etc that would be lost. Gaining money for 1 generation but losing your country forever isn't a win. That £1 mill won't make up for generations of substantial support provided by Denmark.

What if there were a referendum and the Greenlandic people said they wanted to join the USA? They have the right to self-determination, no? Just like the Brits decided to leave the EU— their choice to do so even though it was a dumb decision and they’re suffering economically from having done so.

There is an element of him thinking he knows the cost of things when he has no idea of the value.

And then he doesn’t pay his bills so he doesn’t even know the cost.

Probably but I live in the U.S. and, Trump and his BS aside, I love it here.

That said, I am outraged at the idea of my tax dollars being used to bribe people from Greenland so I guess that actually skews my vote to no. Even though it isn’t $1m it is still crazy and corrupt to contemplate this.

It would end up becoming a form of modern slavery imo. That cash would buy their souls, they’d have to do everything they were told as Trump gave them whatever. It would all anyway need to be used on healthcare and other US stuff - and top ups required. They’d be paying back in different ways forever.
And I can’t believe anyone would seriously do this - no such thing as a free lunch usually but you can be totally, bigly, sure you’d get well shafted on this - as everyone does who thinks trump is giving them a fair deal.

I can see why some people would take the money. But I need home, safety, freedom and to stick it to Trump more than I need a million. If I had to feed DD and couldn’t, I’d take it.

Miami? I don’t know a lot about Inuit but I know that Miami won’t sound like home to many people from the arctic.

I read an amazing book about the forced relocation of Inuit in Canada. It spoke about how land is incredibly important in the north. How knowing the seas and geography and weather are vital. They couldn’t even be relocated to other areas of the arctic without losing culture and a sense of self.
